The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Adraga over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. For the first ten days, from the 16th of July through to the 25th, it’s a real struggle. The wave energy is very weak, with combined energy readings mostly under 150 (sometimes lower than 30), and the wind is a constant problem. It’s nearly always cross-onshore or onshore, and the swell heights are tiny, rarely cracking 3 ft. The swell periods are short, mostly 4 to 8 seconds, so there’s no real push. The water temp is sitting at about 66°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so you can’t even blame the cold for a lack of enthusiasm. Honestly, for a beach and reef setup, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during this whole first week. It’s a grim, flat spell.
Then, things finally start to change as we get into the last week of July. On the 26th, the swell jumps up to 8 ft from the NNW, but the wind is still a messy cross-onshore, so it’s not clean. The energy is moderate (1058-1185), but the quality is poor.
Now, here’s the one true standout – and it’s a cracker, but you gotta be ready for it. On Monday the 27th of July, the stars align for a moment. We’ve got a solid 10 ft swell from the NNW, with a period of 9 seconds, pushing combined energy right up to 1507. That’s a strong, powerful swell. The real kicker is the wind: it’s forecast to be glassy in the morning. Absolute silence. That’s a rare treat for Adraga. The bad news? 10 ft is way too big for beginners and even for most intermediates. This is strictly for the experts. The swell direction is WNW, which is bang on the optimum. The break is fairly consistent, so you can expect a few solid sets. But be warned – it’s exposed, and with that size, it’ll be a handful. The crowd situation is listed as "sometimes," so you might get a few other nutters out there, but with that size, it’ll thin out quickly. This is the one day to circle on the calendar. The afternoon swaps back to a cross-onshore breeze, so the morning window is the only chance.
After the 27th, it’s back to being messy. The 28th and 29th see the swell drop back to 5 ft to 8 ft, but the wind turns back to a strong, lumpy cross-onshore, and the energy fades. By the 30th and 31st, the wind is howling at 25-28 mph, making it choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out.
