The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's run through this in feet and miles per hour.
We’ve got a quiet start, but things wake up on Monday the 17th. The spot is Adraga, a beach and reef break. Water temp is pretty normal for August.
Monday morning the 17th is your best bet. Swell is about 6 ft from the NNW with an 8-second period, combined energy sitting at 364—moderate power. The wind is glassy from the SE at just 3 mph. That’s the cleanest you’ll see all forecast. Crowds are possible here, so get in early. The 6 ft swell is a bit much for beginners, but it’s good for experienced surfers. The direction isn’t a perfect match for the optimum WNW, but the glassy wind makes it a winner.
Monday afternoon the wind goes onshore from the NW at 9 mph and it falls apart. Tuesday the 18th morning is clean but with only 5 ft and a cross-offshore breeze—okay, but not the same magic.
From Thursday the 20th through Saturday the 23rd, the wind gets nasty from the N and NNW at 12-22 mph, cross-onshore mostly, with swell building to 7-7 ft. Lumpy, choppy, not worth it.
Sunday the 23rd morning brings offshore SE wind at 6 mph, clean, with a 7 ft NNW swell. The energy is 591—moderate—but the swell is predicted too big for this break. Over 7 ft, it’s expert-only. That afternoon the wind picks up again, only marginal.
After that, from Monday the 24th onward, it’s cross-onshore or onshore winds from the N and NNW, blowing 12-25 mph, with swell ranging from 6 ft to 8 ft. Even when a long-period 12-second groundswell shows up on Friday the 28th with strong energy of 1364, the wind ruins it. By September 1st, there’s a huge 14-second groundswell at 8 ft with energy of 2900, but it’s still messy with cross-onshore wind.
Bottom line: Monday morning the 17th is your only clean shot. After that, it’s a long stretch of windy, messy surf.
Rusty.
