The Lowdown
Alright, I’m lookin’ at the full 16-day window from now, and I gotta be straight with you: it’s a tough run to get excited about. The only real bright spot is Tuesday the 18th – that’s your one chance this week. After that, the wind just turns on us and it’s a long, messy stretch for a long time. Let’s get into it.
First up, Tuesday morning the 18th at Adraga, and this is the standout. It’s a beach and reef setup, exposed to the WNW swell. We’ve got a clean 5 ft swell from the NNW, with a period of 8 seconds, which is a bit short, but it’s workable. The wind is light out of the S at 9 mph, blowing cross-offshore, so the faces will be pretty clean. The combined energy is moderate at 255, so there’s some push. Water temp is sitting at 69°, which is about average for the time of year here. The morning session is the one to hit – it’s the only time in the whole outlook where the quality is genuine. Crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, so if you can get out early, you’ll have a better shot.
Tuesday afternoon sees the wind pick up a little from the SSW, still cross-off, but the tide or conditions drop the quality a notch. It’s marginal.
Wednesday the 19th, the swell drops to 3 ft from the NNW, period just 7 seconds. The morning is surfable but very ordinary, with a light S wind. The afternoon turns cross-on from the WSW, and it’s poor. Not worth paddling for.
From Thursday the 20th all the way through to the end of the month, we’re in a long, frustrating gap. The wind swings hard from the NNW, blowing 16 to 25 mph, cross-on or onshore, and the swell gets bigger but it’s completely blown out. On the 21st and 22nd, the swell hits 5 ft to 8 ft, but with that strong, messy wind, it’s a total write-off. The energy climbs into the hundreds, even over 1000 on the 23rd, but it’s all for nothing – it’s a kitesurfer’s paradise, not a surfer’s.
The last few days of the month and into early September stay poor. The wind stays onshore or cross-on, with swell around 3 ft to 6 ft, but the quality is just not there. The only flicker of hope is Monday the 31st of August in the morning – we get a glassy 3 ft from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and a light NE breeze at 3 mph. The energy is moderate at 181. It’s listed as “surfable but very ordinary,” so it’s a long shot, but if you’re desperate, that’s the only other window. The rest of that day and into September is poor again.
So, bottom line: Tuesday morning the 18th is your best bet. After that, it’s a long, windy wait. Don’t hold your breath for anything clean until maybe that glassy window on the 31st. Stay tuned and hope the forecasts change.
