Briech Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days at Briech are looking pretty grim. We’ve got no standout days, no real swell, and the conditions are just not playing ball. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.

The water’s sitting at 70°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – you’ll want a decent wetsuit.

Right now, starting today, Sunday the 13th of September, we’ve got some small NE windswell, only about 4ft, but the period is a short 6 seconds. The wind is a fresh offshore from the ENE, keeping things clean, but the energy is weak at 135 – there’s just no power in it. The surf quality is poor. Monday the 14th is even smaller, with a drop to 1ft, and while Tuesday the 15th stays tiny, it gets a messy cross-shore wind. Wednesday the 16th shows a little bump up to 3ft to 3ft but the wind swings all over the place, leaving a lumpy chop.

Thursday the 17th has a pulse from the WNW pushing to 4ft and the energy jumps to 325, but again the period is a moderate 10 seconds, and cross-onshore and cross-shore winds ruin any chance of a clean wave. Friday the 18th morning is the best you’ll see in the first week: 2ft of WNW swell with a 10-second period and a light offshore breeze from the ENE. The energy is weak at 89, but the conditions are clean. You might get a few crumbly sandbank runners, but it’s very ordinary.

After that, it drops right off. Saturday the 19th has a tiny 1.0ft groundswell with a very long 16-second period – sounds good, but there’s no size to work with, and the wind is moderate offshore. By the 20th, we’re back to 4ft of short-period NE swell and a fresh breeze. Sunday the 20th is no better.

The second week, starting Monday the 21st, is a flat run. Waist-high waves if you’re lucky, with all swell heights reading 0.7ft to 1ft. The period is long on a couple of days – 15 to 16 seconds – but without any height, it’s just ocean noise. The wind is offshore most mornings, keeping it clean, but the energy is weak, often below 60. By Saturday the 26th, it’s barely a ripple at 0.3ft. Sunday the 27th and Monday the 28th have a 1ft, 14-16 second groundswell coming in, but the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, making it choppy and messy.

Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle on Friday the 18th morning, you might find a knee-high runner, but don’t expect much. For the most part, this stretch is a write-off – the consistency is poor, the energy is low, and the winds are never right. With a beach-and-reef setup and these weak, short-period waves under strong wind, it’s looking more interesting for a kite session than a surf.
