The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We've got a real flat spell on our hands for Las Redes. Looking at the entire 16-day run starting now, there's not a single session that I'd call good. In fact, the whole forecast is a bit of a bust.
The biggest issue is that for the first 11 days, from Tuesday the 18th of August right through to Friday the 28th, the swell is just too small and weak to offer anything worthwhile. We're talking ankle-snappers on the best days, with heights barely pushing 2 feet and combined energy values hanging in the weak range (mostly below 42). The wind is also not playing ball, with a persistent cross-onshore flow through much of that period, leaving the surface choppy and lumpy. It's a real shame because light offshore breezes do pop up on a few mornings but with zero or tiny swell, it doesn't matter.
The one moment that lifts the gloom a little is right at the tail end. On Saturday, the 29th of August, we finally see some life. The morning session has the wind going clean and cross-off from the NNW at 6 mph. Swell picks up to 4 feet from the SE, with energy climbing to a moderate 78. Still, it's only a 5-second period, so the waves won't have much push or shape. The afternoon gets even more interesting with combined energy hitting 107 and height up to 4 feet from the SE. But again, that short period and a cross-shore wind mean it's going to be a messy, sectiony affair.
Given the persistent small, weak, and short-period swell combined with a mostly poor wind direction (WSW onshore) for the rest of the run, this setup at Las Redes (sandbar) looks more interesting for a kite surfer needing a bit of wind than for a paddler. There's just no genuine stand-out moment to get excited about. Keep an eye on it though; it tends not to stay this quiet for long, and the forecasts can change.
