The Lowdown
Alright, crew, let’s break down what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks. I’m looking at Las Redes, and I gotta be honest – there’s not a single good surf day in the whole 16-day stretch. Not one. The forecast is all “poor surf conditions” from start to finish, and the scores are all zeros. That’s a tough one, especially because this spot is usually fairly consistent for a beginner sandbar. But right now, it’s a total dry spell. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the energy is weak – we’re talking combined energy values that barely hit triple digits, like 33 (weak) on July 19 morning, and later even single digits. The biggest swell I see is 4 ft on July 27 afternoon, but that comes with a moderate cross-onshore chop and a short 5-second period, so it’s messy. The water temperature on July 19 morning is 78°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than normal – that’s really unusual, but unfortunately it doesn’t help the waves. The optimum direction for Las Redes is WSW, but the swells we get are mostly from WNW or W, so they’re not lining up great either. There are a few glassy moments – like on July 23 Thursday morning with glassy conditions and a 2 ft WNW swell, but the period is only 5 seconds and the wave comment still says “poor surf conditions”. On August 1 Saturday morning, another glassy morning with 2 ft W swell and 5-second period, but again, no good. The pattern is just flat or weak and choppy. For a break that’s fairly consistent, this is a real bummer, but it never stays poor for long around here. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out. But as it stands, I’d say give the board a rest and wait for the next proper pulse.
