The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our stretch of coast. I gotta be straight with you – this isn’t a classic summer outlook. There’s no real swell on the cards for the next 16 days, just a whole lot of small, weak, and messy conditions. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead.
Looking at the first break on the list, Las Redes. The water is sitting at 77°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, feels like a bathtub.
The whole run starts on Wednesday, July 15th, and honestly, it’s a no-go. We’re looking at a tiny 0.7 ft swell from the west with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 13 – that’s barely a ripple. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the WNW, making it chop and bumpy. It’s just poor surf conditions all around.
Thursday, July 16th, is a bit cleaner in the morning with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is still pathetic at 0.7 ft. The energy drops to 6. That’s not a wave, it’s a lake. The afternoon gets a whiff of a 2 ft swell, but the period is a short 4 seconds and the cross-wind messes it up.
Friday, July 17th, through to the end of the month, it’s the same story. We get little pulses of 2 ft to 3 ft swell from the west-northwest, but the wind is almost always a cross-shore or cross-onshore breeze. The best we see is a few mornings with a light, clean cross-offshore wind, but the swell is too weak to generate any real shape. The combined energy barely cracks 50, and most days it’s below 30. That’s very weak, low-energy surf.
It’s worth noting that towards the end of the run, on July 24th and 25th, we see the swell direction swing to the southeast, but the winds go onshore, creating choppy, poor conditions. The swell is still only around 3 ft to 4 ft, but with a short 5-second period and a strong onshore wind, it’s a messy, blown-out situation. Not worth paddling out for.
There are no standout days. No “best on offer.” It’s a full 16-day blank run. The forecast suggests this is a pretty normal pattern for this break when things go quiet. The wind is never the right offshore direction to make the most of the tiny swell we get, and the energy is just too low. If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger afternoon cross-winds and a bit of chop might be fun, but for a surfboard, it’s a no. I’d be checking back in a few days – forecasts can change, and it doesn’t stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
