Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Overall, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating run for the region. The first surf recommendation we see doesn't kick off until Tuesday morning, July 7th, and right from the start, it’s a struggle. The surf is tiny, with a combined swell energy of just 4, which is basically nothing. The water temperature is sitting at 77°F, which is a pretty wild 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a bath in there.
We’ve got a long, slow grind ahead. For the first week, through to about Sunday, July 12th, the swell is consistently under 2ft. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making it messy. The one little glimmer comes on Sunday morning, July 12th at Las Redes, when the wind goes glassy. Swell is only 1ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, so it’s tiny, but it’ll be smooth as glass. The combined swell energy is 27 (weak), so don’t expect much push, but it might be nice for a longboard or a splash.
After that, we step into a slight uptick. From Monday, July 13th into Tuesday, July 14th, the swell tries to build to 3ft, with energy hitting 59 and 60. The direction is still WNW with a short 5-6 second period, so it’s weak, windswelly stuff. The winds are onshore or cross-onshore again, so it’ll be choppy and looks pretty average.
The next standout window arrives Friday, July 17th and Saturday, July 18th in the mornings. On Friday morning, July 17th, we get a clean 3ft from the WNW with a 6-second period and nice cross-offshore wind from the NW. The energy reads 85, which is the highest we’ve seen but still moderate. It’s a bit short-period, so walls might be a bit fat, but it’ll be clean. Saturday morning, July 18th is very similar – 3ft from WNW, cross-off NW wind, and an energy of 82. It’s still a short-period swell (6 seconds), so it’s going to barrel a bit quicker on the banks, but the clean offshore wind will make it ridable. These two mornings are the best of the whole run.
There’s not a lot of depth to the second week, though. After that Saturday morning, the swell drops off a cliff again. Sunday, July 19th through Monday, July 20th sees the energy drop to zero for most sessions, then a small 3ft bump on Monday afternoon. It’s really just those two clean mornings that shine.
Honestly, for most of the 16 days, the surf is too small, too short-period, and onshore. This setup looks far more interesting for a kite than a paddle. Keep your expectations low, and maybe circle those 17th and 18th July mornings – they’re the only real chance for a clean, rideable wave here.
Rusty.
