The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty flat run for Las Redes (sandbar). We’re looking at a solid stretch of tiny, weak waves with barely any energy in the water for the first week and a half. The combined swell energy is sitting at mostly single-digit or low double-digit values (6, 18, 25, 38) – that’s about as weak as it gets. The swell heights are hovering around 0.7 ft to 2 ft, and the periods are short, mostly 4 to 9 seconds, so there’s just no push or shape to speak of. Winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, which isn’t doing anyone any favours. The water is a warm 80°, and it’s running much warmer than usual for this time of year, which is a nice touch but not enough to get excited about the surf.
From Monday 17 August through to around Thursday 28 August, it’s all poor surf conditions – no real standout sessions. Even the glassy patch on Tuesday 25 August morning with a 2 ft WNW swell and very light winds won’t give you much more than ankle-biters. The energy is still just 19 and the period is only 5 seconds – barely a ripple.
Then there’s a proper dead zone from Friday 28 August through to the end of the month. On Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August, the combined energy is zero, and the swell is completely flat. The wind goes cross-offshore on Saturday 29 morning with a clean look, but there’s nothing to ride.
Toward the very end of the outlook, on Sunday 30 August morning, there’s a tiny blip – a 0.3 ft WNW swell with a 12-second period and glassy offshore winds. That’s about as clean as it gets, but at 0.3 ft you’re basically floating. The combined energy is only 6. Then on Monday 31 August morning, we see a 1 ft WNW swell with a 6-second period, cross-offshore wind, and clean conditions – combined energy of 22. Still tiny, but at least it’s clean. And then on Tuesday 1 September afternoon, there’s a 0.7 ft WNW swell with a very long 16-second period, combined energy of 32, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. That long period might have some push, but the size just isn’t there.
In summary, there is no good surf in this 16-day window for Las Redes. The spot is fairly consistent, but the forecasts are just all showing poor surf. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. Keep your eyes on the long-range, but don’t hold your breath.
