The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's get straight into it for Las Redes. The water is a balmy 78°, which is a solid 5° warmer than what’s typical for this time of year—that’s much warmer than normal and will make the paddle feel like a treat.
Honestly, looking over the whole 16-day stretch, it’s a pretty flat run. There are no proper standouts to get excited about. We’ve got weak swells and periods where it's barely breaking. The first real surfable pulse isn’t until Monday the 24th, so the start is a bit of a wait.
Friday 21st through Sunday 23rd are a write-off. Tiny little 1 ft to 2 ft waves with poor cross-onshore wind and low energy (just 32 to 74 on the scale). Not worth paddling out.
Monday 24th morning shows a bit of a bump with 3 ft swell from the W, but it’s cloudy with a strong 16 mph SSW onshore wind. The afternoon sees 4 ft from the WSW with moderate cross-onshore chop. The combined energy kicks up to 168 and 217, which is decent moderate energy, but the wind messes it up. Still poor conditions.
Tuesday 25th morning looks the best of a bad bunch. Swell drops to 3 ft from the W, but we get a clean 3 mph NW cross-offshore breeze. Combined energy is 97, which is weak. It’s small, but clean. The swell period is just 8 seconds though, so it’s windswell and won’t have much punch. This is your best bet, but keep expectations low.
Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th fade back into tiny, weak waves (1 ft to 2 ft) with choppy conditions.
Friday 28th morning shows 1 ft with a clean 12 mph N offshore breeze. Combined energy is 26—very weak. The afternoon goes flat.
From Saturday 29th all the way to Saturday 5th September, it’s a steady diet of knee-high mush. Mostly 0.3 ft to 2 ft. The only positive is that winds are often light or cross-off, so the water will look clean, but there’s just no swell to push.
Monday 25th August morning is the one moment worth a look—3 ft, clean, light offshore—but it’s small and weak. Don’t expect anything special. For this stretch of days, the setup is too small for everyone. Kite surfers might get a better deal if the wind picks up, but for paddle surfing, it’s a long, quiet run.
Stay patient, mate. Sometimes it’s like this, but forecasts can always shift.
Rusty.
