The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Las Redes over the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you – it's a quiet stretch.
We're looking at a long run of small, weak surf. For the first week and a half, the combined energy is mostly in the low double digits or even single digits, with a few days poking into the 200s but even those have poor conditions. The water is a notable 78°F right now, which is a whopping 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that's very unusual, so the water will feel like bathwater.
The first real chance for a surf comes on Sunday the 23rd of August, but it's tiny. We're talking about 1ft of swell from the west, with a period of 14 seconds. The energy is weak at 44, and the wind is a light onshore breeze from the SSW. It's not going to be any good.
Monday the 24th of August sees a bump in size – around 4ft to 4ft from the west, with moderate energy readings (201 and 204). But the wind is a messy cross-onshore from the SW and WSW, making for choppy conditions. It's a write-off.
Tuesday the 25th of August is the closest thing we have to a standout, but it's still not great. The morning has a tiny 3ft west swell (8-second period) with a light cross-offshore wind from the NW that keeps it clean. The energy is low at 97, so it's barely breaking. The afternoon gets a bit messier with a cross-shore breeze.
After that, it's all downhill. From Wednesday the 26th of August right through to Monday the 7th of September, the swell is consistently under 2ft and the energy is almost always below 50. There are a few glassy or clean moments, like Saturday the 29th of August morning with a glassy 2ft WNW swell, and Wednesday the 2nd of September morning with a glassy 2ft west swell, but the waves are just too small to paddle. Even the slightly bigger 4ft pulse on Thursday the 3rd of September is from the southeast with a cross-shore wind, making it choppy.
Truth is, there's nothing here for a surfer. The swell is too small and weak for the entire 16-day window, and when there's a bit of size, the wind spoils it. This kind of blank run is pretty normal for this area when the swell windows don't line up.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts. Things have to pick up eventually.
Rusty.
