The Lowdown
Yo, what’s up, it’s Rusty. Let’s get straight into it for Las Redes.
Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – we’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch here at Las Redes for the next 16 days. Honestly, the pickings are slim, and there’s not a single day that jumps out as a standout. The whole forecast period is basically a flat spell, so if you’re itching to paddle out, you might be better off waiting for a change in the weather pattern.
Let me walk you through it. Right now, starting on Friday the 21st, we’ve got nothing happening. The water temperature is sitting around average for this time of year, which is fine, but there’s just no push. On Friday, we’re looking at a tiny 2ft wind swell from the west with a short period of 5 seconds – that’s just weak, weak energy (32). Wind is cross-shore from the W at 6 mph, but the waves are just… poor. It’s not worth your time.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are the same story – we’ve got a gap of a few days with nothing worth mentioning. Swell heights stay under 2ft, and the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making it choppy. The combined swell energy stays in the low double digits or even less. It’s frustrating.
Monday the 24th sees a slight bump in the swell, with 3ft to 4ft from the west, but the period is still short at 8-9 seconds. The energy picks up a bit (140-173), but the wind is still onshore or cross-onshore from the SSW or SW, so it’s messy. Not the clean stuff we want.
From Tuesday the 25th right through to the start of September, it’s more of the same – tiny, weak swells, often under 2ft, with periods under 10 seconds. There are a few moments of clean conditions – like Wednesday morning the 26th, or Saturday morning the 29th, where the wind is light and cross-offshore – but the waves are just too small to ride. You might see a ripple, but nothing to get excited about.
Even the longer-period swell we see on Sunday the 23rd (15 seconds) is only 0.6ft. That’s a groundswell, but it’s totally flat. And on the 28th, we get a 13-second period swell, but again, only 0.9ft. No power there.
The first week of September doesn’t bring any relief. There’s a brief window on the 4th and 5th with a little 3ft swell from the ESE, but the period is short (5 seconds) and the wind is offshore. Still, the energy is weak (65). On Saturday the 5th, there’s a moment of glassy conditions with a tiny 0.3ft swell – that’s just for the longboarders if you’re desperate.
So, bottom line: there’s no good surf in this 16-day window. The breaks at Las Redes are fairly consistent in general, so this kind of flat run is a bit of a bummer, but it happens. Keep an eye on the forecast – it tends not to stay poor for long. Until next time, I’m Rusty.
