The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – this stretch ahead is a tough one. We're looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The whole 16-day window from the 23rd of August through to the 7th of September is basically a write-off. There's no good surf on offer, not a single session that's worth getting the board wet for. You'll be staring at flat, weak, and messy conditions day after day.
The only spot in the frame is Las Redes, a sandbar setup that's fairly consistent but it's just not catching anything. The water's sitting at 78°F on the 23rd, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that's a very unusual warm spell, but it doesn't help the waves one bit.
We start the forecast on Sunday the 23rd with a tiny 2ft west swell puffing in at 12 seconds, but it's cross-on and the combined energy is a weak 73. It's a flat, choppy mess. Monday the 24th sees a bump to 4ft from the west, but the period drops to 8-9 seconds and the wind is howling cross-on at 12-16 mph, making it choppy and ugly. The energy climbs to 242, but it's poor surf quality.
The pattern doesn't improve. Tuesday the 25th morning goes clean with a light NNW cross-off, but the swell is only 3ft with a weak 99 energy. The rest of the week is a parade of tiny, weak swells – 1.0ft to 2ft – with periods often below 8 seconds and cross-off or cross winds. The energy readings are all in the single or low double digits, which is pathetic.
Even when the wind goes offshore on the 28th and 29th, the swell is a paltry 0.7ft to 2ft. There's a glassy morning on the 1st of September with a 3ft west-northwest swell, but it's gutless with a 5-second period and only 30 energy. The 3rd of September shows a 5ft east-southeast swell with a 6-second period and 159 energy, but it's cross-on and choppy – a kite surfer's dream, maybe, but not a paddle surfer's.
There's just nothing here. This is a classic blank run for this area. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, the best advice is to leave the boards in the shed and find something else to do for a couple of weeks.
Rusty.
