The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s happening at Las Redes. The outlook here is pretty disappointing for the next sixteen days. I’ve looked at the whole spread, and honestly, there’s not a single session that I’d call a standout. The surf is just not on.
Right now, through the rest of July and into the first week of August, the waves are small and weak. The combined swell energy is low, mostly in the double digits, with a few days hitting the 30s and 40s, but that’s still weak energy. The best we get is a 4ft swell from the WNW on Saturday the 25th, but it’s not enough to make it worth calling a good session. The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, so the surface is choppy and messy. There’s a brief moment on Thursday morning the 23rd where it goes glassy, with a 2ft WNW swell, but the energy is only 23 and the period is 5 seconds – that’s weak, short-period stuff. Not enough push for a proper ride.
Looking further out, the waves stay tiny, with heights dropping to 0.3ft or even flat. The wind gets stronger, especially on Thursday the 30th of July afternoon, with a 5ft SE swell and combined energy of 159 (moderate energy), but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-shore, which will make it a mess. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than anything for a paddle surfer.
The water temperature is 78°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than average for this time of year – very unusual. But with the poor surf, it’s not much comfort.
There are big gaps with no recommendations. From now until the end of the forecast period, there’s no surf worth paddling out for. The break is a sandbar, fairly consistent, but this stretch is a real dud. Breaks can go like this around here, it happens. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d say leave the board at home.
Rusty.
