Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Las Redes over the next couple of weeks. I’m not going to sugar-coat it – we are looking at a seriously quiet run of surf. The first real window with anything worth talking about doesn’t even show up until Friday morning, the 3rd of July, and even then, it’s a tough sell. There’s a long gap of no real recommendations, with only tiny, weak signals for days on end.
Starting off on Friday morning the 3rd, we see a small 4ft swell coming from the SE with a short, weak 6-second period. The wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore from the ESE. The water temperature is sitting at 78°F, which is 8°F warmer than normal – that’s very unusual, really warm for this time of year. The combined swell energy is weak, reading just 100. Honestly, the conditions are poor, with a lumpy cross-chop making it messy.
Nothing changes for the next several days. Saturday the 4th, Saturday afternoon sees a bump to 5ft from the SE, period still a weak 6 seconds, but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-shore, creating more messy chop. The energy reading is moderate at 152, but the quality is shot.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday – we get tiny pulses under 1ft, with periods all over the place. Tuesday morning the 7th is interesting because the wind goes glassy – just 3 mph from the ESE – but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft from the W with a 9-second period. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to surf. The combined energy is a mere 2. Just flat and clean.
This pattern of flat, poor surf continues right through the second week. Wednesday the 8th, Thursday the 9th, Friday the 10th – the swell height barely cracks 3ft on the 10th with a 5-second period from the W, and the wind is onshore or cross-onshore at 9-12 mph. Energy readings are mostly in the teens and low thirties. We see a little bump on Thursday morning the 16th of July, with a 2ft W swell, a 5-second period, and a light 6 mph cross-offshore wind from the NNW giving clean conditions. The energy reading is still weak at 32, but at least it’s clean. That’s as good as it gets.
The closest thing to a standout is that Thursday morning the 16th, purely because the wind is light and cross-offshore, giving clean faces on that small W swell. But it’s tiny – only 2ft – and the period is short. Not a day to get excited about, but if you need a paddle, that’s your best shot.
Everything else is flat, choppy, or blown out. With the swell being so small and the energy so low, and the setup being a sandbar that is fairly exposed but predominantly getting small, weak windswells, this looks more like a kitesurfing or flat-water session than a proper surf day for most of the period.
