Right, grab a coffee, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for us here at Las Redes.
Honestly, mate, it’s a bit of a flat spell to kick things off. The first week or so is looking pretty average, with tiny waves and a lot of onshore junk. We’ve got a solid 10-day stretch from Thursday the 9th of July where the surf just isn’t offering anything worthwhile. It’s not until we get into the second week that a few windows of clean surf start to open up, but even then, the size is very modest. The standout moment, and the only one I’d really paddle out for, falls on the 20th of July.
Let’s break it down. From Thursday the 9th right through to about Sunday the 19th, the swell is small, mostly below 2ft, and coming from a poor W to WSW direction for this sandbar break. The wind is a constant problem – onshore or cross-onshore from the SW and WSW, making for choppy, bumpy conditions. There’s no energy to speak of, with the combined energy reading a weak 21 on the 9th afternoon. The water temperature is 76°F, which is a massive 6°F warmer than normal – that’s really unusual, mate, feels like bath water.
There are a few mornings in there – like Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th – where the wind goes light and cross-offshore, cleaning the surface right up, but the waves are still tiny. On the 15th morning, we see a 3ft swell from the WNW with a clean surface, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s weak and won’t have any push. The energy is still a low 34.
Now, the one that has my attention is Monday the 20th of July. We finally get a pulse of proper energy. The swell jumps to 4ft from the WNW, with a combined energy reading of 118 – that’s the first moderate reading we’ve seen all forecast. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NW, which will groom the face perfectly. That morning session is the only real highlight in the whole 16 days. It’s still small, but for a sandbar, that WNW direction is the best we’ve got, and the clean conditions will make it surfable. Keep in mind, this is a fairly consistent break, but it can get a crowd, so get there early.
After that, the 21st and 22nd of July mornings also offer clean cross-off winds, but the swell drops back to 3ft and 3ft, with energy dropping back to 38 and 48. Decent for a grovel, but nothing compared to the 20th. The 23rd is clean again with a light N wind, but it’s just 2ft.
So, the call is simple. The first 10 days are a write-off. The one and only stand-out is Monday morning, the 20th of July. It’s not a bomb, but it’s the best we’ll get. Don’t expect much else.
Rusty.
