The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Las Redes. I’ve looked over the next 16 days, and I gotta be honest with you – the surf window is basically a no-go. There’s not a single standout session in the whole run. The pattern is flat and uninspiring, with a persistent lack of any decent swell energy. The water is sitting at 76° – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable if you’re just floating around, but not for catching waves.
The first real recommendation is scheduled for Monday, July 13th, with a tiny 2 ft swell from the west, but it’s blown out by a 12 mph crosswind and the combined energy is a weak 27 – that’s barely a ripple. Tuesday the 14th is even worse – same small 2 ft swell, but cross-onshore winds and a 5-second period, making it choppy and messy. Wednesday the 15th brings a slight improvement with a clean light cross-offshore wind in the morning, but the swell is still only 2 ft with a short 5-second period, and the energy is only 25. It’s flat, mate.
Thursday the 16th through to the end of the month is a brutal stretch. The swell heights hover between 0.3 ft and 4 ft, but the wind is almost always wrong – cross, cross-on, or onshore – and the periods are short and weak. The combined energy values are mostly in the single digits or low teens, which is very weak. The best looking window is Saturday morning, July 18th, with a clean 3 ft WNW swell and a light offshore wind from the north, giving you a combined energy of 40. That’s the most promising moment, but it’s still just a small, inconsistent wave. Sunday the 19th morning has a clean 2 ft swell with a light onshore wind – not great.
From July 20th onwards, it’s a flat, poor-quality slog. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday, July 21st, with a glassy, clean morning and a perfect offshore wind from the northeast, but the swell is only 0.7 ft with a 7-second period. Then on July 22nd, you get a moderate cross-offshore wind and a 2 ft swell, but it’s still weak. The 28th of July offers a 3 ft west swell with a light cross-onshore breeze and a combined energy of 81 – the biggest number in the whole run, but the wind is still not ideal and the quality is rated poor. Honestly, for a spot like this that’s fairly consistent, a blank run this long is a rare thing. It’s a tough stretch.
If you’re absolutely desperate, the sandbar setup at Las Redes is a beginner-friendly beach break, but with these tiny, short-period swells and mostly cross-shore winds, it’s not going to offer much. The swell is too small and weak for any real power. A long period swell in the 11-12 second range shows up on the 26th and 27th, but with heights of only 0.3 ft, it’s completely flat. For paddle surfing, this is a total bust. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most days, especially with the 12-18 mph cross-shore winds. But for a surfer? Forget it.
