The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.

Honestly, it’s a tough run for the next couple of weeks. The surf’s flat to tiny for the entire 16-day window, and there’s never a moment where it gets good enough to shout about. This is one of those long, quiet stretches where the ocean just isn’t putting any energy our way. The first proper recommendation doesn’t even show up until the 18th of August, and from there it’s a real grind.

The only spot in the mix is Las Redes, a sandbar setup that’s best for beginners when it’s working. But it’s not working. The water is sitting at 79°F on the 18th, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, and it feels like a bathtub out there.

We start on Tuesday morning, 18th August. The swell is a pathetic 0.7ft from the west with a 5-second period, and the combined energy is a measly 3. It’s glassy with a light NNE breeze at 3 mph, so the surface is clean, but there’s nothing to ride. That afternoon, a 15-second period swell tries to trick us, but it’s only 0.3ft and cross-offshore wind makes it a waste of time.

Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th are the same story – tiny 0.7ft to 1.0ft swells, all cross-onshore, and the energy never gets above 7. It’s choppy and ugly. This pattern drags on for days. The biggest swell we see is on Sunday 23rd August, with a 4ft swell from the WNW at 6 seconds and energy hitting 69 in the morning. But the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the WNW at 12 mph, so it’s messy and won’t hold shape. It’s not worth getting wet for.

Through the rest of August and into early September, every row is marked “poor surf conditions.” The wind flips around – some clean mornings with light cross-offshore breezes, like on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th, but the swell is only 1.0ft to 1ft. There’s simply no power. The period is short, mostly 4 to 6 seconds, which means weak, crumbly waves that won’t stand up.

The best we’ve got in the whole 16 days is probably the morning of Monday 31st August. It’s clean with a light cross-offshore breeze from the east at 9 mph, and a 2ft swell from the WSW at 4 seconds. Energy is 28. It’s still tiny and short-period, but if you’re a beginner on a foamie, you might find something knee-high to roll around on. That’s as good as it gets.

For the rest, it’s a total write-off. There’s no standout, no day to circle on the calendar. Just flat, weak, or blown-out conditions. Sometimes the ocean just takes a holiday, and this is one of those times.
