The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. I’m not gonna lie, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and weak around here. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, messy swell with hardly any energy behind it. The first real chance to get wet comes up on Tuesday the 25th, but even then it’s nothing to write home about. The windows are short and the conditions are ordinary.
Tuesday the 25th morning, Playa Poniente will have a tiny 2ft swell from the SSW, with a period of 6 seconds – that’s weak, short-period windswell, no punch. The combined energy is only 43 (weak). But the wind… it’s glassy. Dead calm, offshore from the WNW. That’s a major positive for a spot that’s inconsistent to begin with. The water is sitting at a very unusual 84° – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, a full 6° above average. The crowds are only sometimes an issue, so if you’re a beginner wanting a clean paddle on a soft little wave, this is your window. Anything bigger than 5ft is too much for beginners, and this is well under that.
Thursday the 27th morning brings a slightly bigger pulse of 4ft from the SSW, still with a short 6-second period. The combined energy jumps to 187 (moderate). The wind is glassy again – completely calm. That’s about as clean as it gets. But the swell direction is from the SE optimum, and we’re getting S swell, so it’s a bit off. Still, for a beach and reef setup that rarely breaks consistently, a glassy, surfable 4ft wave is the best we’ll see. That’s the standout in this whole outlook.
Beyond that, it’s a whole lot of nothing. From the 28th right through to the 6th of September, the swell drops back to 1ft to 3ft, with energy levels barely cracking 50. There are a few glassy mornings – like the 30th of August, 31st of August morning, 1st of September morning, and the 4th and 5th of September mornings – but the swell is too small and weak to bother with. The combined energy is in the single digits or low teens most of the time (weak). It’s just a long, flat run.
For experienced surfers, there’s nothing here over 8ft, so it’s all beginner-friendly or not worth suiting up. The short period (under 8 seconds) on every single swell means these waves will be weak, crumbly, and lacking any real push. Point breaks or reefs would handle this better, but we’re stuck with a beach and reef setup that needs a proper groundswell to work.
So, the honest truth? Unless you’re absolutely desperate for a knee-high wave under a glassy sky, leave the board at home. The best window is Thursday the 27th morning, with a clean 4ft. Anything else is a waste of wax.
