The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are going to be a tough watch for surfers around Barceloneta. I’ve scanned the charts, and honestly, there’s just no decent swell on the horizon. We’re looking at a long, dry spell, so don’t get your hopes up.
Right off the bat, things are flat. For the first surf recommendation we need to wait all the way until the morning of Saturday, 22 August. Even then, it’s not pretty. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell coming out of the East with a short, weak period of just 4 seconds. The combined swell energy is a measly 14 – that’s barely a ripple. To make matters worse, the wind is onshore from the ESE at 9 mph, so it’s going to be messy. The water is sitting at a warm 83°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive. This is strictly for beginners who just want to sit on a board, and even then, it’s inconsistent, so you’ll be doing more floating than riding.
Things don’t get any better as we move through the week. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th offer glassy conditions in the mornings, which is a tease, but with less than 1ft of swell, you could walk across the bay without getting your shorts wet. The wind shifts around a bit, giving us a few clean windows, but the swell simply isn’t there to make anything of it. The combined energy values are 1 or 2 – dead flat. It’s disappointing, I know. The same story repeats through the end of August and into the first days of September. We see brief moments with a light offshore wind, like on the morning of the 27th, but the swell is just too small to care about.
There’s a slight flicker of hope on Tuesday afternoon, 1 September. The swell ticks up to 2ft from the ENE, and the period stretches to 8 seconds, giving a combined energy of 58 – the highest we’ll see. But the wind is onshore again from the ESE at 6 mph, so it’ll be lumpy. That little pulse fades quickly, and by Thursday, 3 September, we’re back to near-flat conditions. From Friday, 4 September right through to Sunday, 6 September, the wave comment is basically "nothing." The combined energy is zero for multiple days in a row. There is literally no surf to chase.
Look, it’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s not unusual. When the Med goes quiet, she goes quiet. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing on the table worth paddling out for. I’d leave the boards at home and find something else to do for a while.
Stay patient,
Rusty
