The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. First up, I’m looking at the whole 16-day picture for Punta-Xarraca-Ibiza, and honestly, it’s a pretty quiet run. There’s a long stretch of days with very little to nothing on offer, especially from the 21st through to the 31st of August, where most sessions are flat or just offering tiny, weak dribbles. The first few days and the tail end of the window have a little more pulse, but there’s no real standout swell that’s gonna get the blood pumping. The water is sitting at a very warm 85°F – that’s 6°F above the long-term average, so it’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, which is pretty unusual.
The first real chance to wet a line comes on Wednesday morning, 19th August. Conditions are clean with a gentle breeze, but the swell is a tiny 0.7 ft from the NNE with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is just 3, so it’s very weak. It’s a beginner-level wave, but barely enough to get on a longboard. The afternoon is even smaller, with 0.3 ft swell and moderate breeze. Not worth getting excited about.
Thursday 20th August sees a jump in size, but the quality drops. The morning brings a 5 ft swell from the W, but it’s a short 5 second period, cross-onshore wind, and a moderate energy of 101. It’s going to be choppy and messy – more of a challenge than a joy. The afternoon goes flat again.
There’s a long gap of almost no surf from Friday 21st August through to Monday 24th August, with only tiny, unrideable bumps. The wind switches around, but the swell just isn’t there.
Saturday 22nd August offers a tiny bit of hope with a 2 ft to 3 ft swell from the NNE in the morning and afternoon, but the period is short at 6 seconds and the energy is low (16 to 52). The morning has a slight air, so it’s clean, but the waves are just too small for a proper session.
The next notable feature is a long way off. The morning of Wednesday 2nd September sees a jump to 5 ft from the NNW with a 6 second period and moderate energy of 130. The wind is clean in the afternoon, but the swell direction is from the NNW and the optimum swell direction for this spot is NNE – so it’s not a perfect match. It’s still a bit of a stretch to call it a standout.
The last few days, 3rd and 4th September, offer a little more consistency with 2 ft swell from the NE and a period of 7 to 8 seconds, with clean conditions and light winds. The energy is moderate (47 to 50). It’s surfable, but still small and not going to blow anyone away.
Given the inconsistent nature of the break and the fact that most of the window is flat or very small, this is a normal quiet period for the area. Don’t hold your breath. The best bet, if you’re desperate, would be the Wednesday morning 2nd September session for the slightly bigger size, but it’s not a day to call in sick for.
