The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a slow burner, that’s for sure. There’s a big flat spell kicking us off, but the backend of this forecast window has some serious potential if you’re patient.
The first real chance at anything is Friday the 21st of August. Le Ruppione (beach and reef) will see a weak 3ft swell out of the WSW, but the wave energy is just pitiful, sitting at 91. It’s clean early with a light offshore NE breeze, and the period is a short 7 seconds. It’s surfable, but only just. Honestly, it’s a “if you’re desperate” kind of day, not one to get excited about. The water is a balmy 83°, and that’s a whopping 6° warmer than usual – that’s very unusual for this time of year.
After that, we slip back into a massive lull. From Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 24th, the swell just disappears. We’re talking barely ankle-biters, with energy values dropping to single digits. It’s flat, it’s glassy, and it’s pretty to look at, but there is nothing to ride. This dead spell stretches for days, and you’ll be checking the forecast hoping for a blip.
We finally see a pulse of life on Tuesday the 25th of August. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the west, and the energy jumps to 108. But the wind is gonna ruin it. A moderate cross-onshore breeze messes it up in the afternoon, and the period is still a short 8 seconds. Not great.
Here’s where things start to get interesting. Wednesday the 26th of August morning is the first genuinely clean window. The swell holds at 6ft from the WNW, the energy jumps to 459, and we get a light cross-offshore NE wind. It’s clean and there’s some push to it, but the period is still a short 8 seconds, so it might be a bit crumbly. It’s the best we’ve seen, but it’s still not the standout.
After another flat couple of days, we see the sets return on Friday the 28th with 6ft at 7 seconds, but the wind kicks up again, so it’s messy.
Now, listen up, because this is the one to circle. The real standout is the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September. This is more than a week out, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The forecast is showing a solid 8ft swell out of the WNW with a long 9-second period. The energy reading is a massive 1625, which is strong to very strong. The wind is forecast to be a light cross-offshore from the NNE, which should keep it reasonably clean. This is a big, powerful swell, over 8ft, so this is for experienced surfers only. The break is inconsistent, and being a beach and reef setup, a long-period swell like this can be a bit tricky, but if it lines up, this will be the session of the fortnight. The Thursday morning after also looks promising with 5ft and offshore winds, but that Wednesday is the one.
The days leading up to it get big, with 8ft and 10ft on the 1st of September, but the winds are onshore and it’ll be a washing machine. This Wednesday window is clean and powerful. If the long-range forecast holds, that’s your day.
So, the plan is simple: sit tight through the long flat spell, don’t waste your energy on the weak junky days, and aim everything at that Wednesday the 2nd of September session. It might be a while coming, but it could be worth the wait.
Rusty.
