The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. I’ve been staring at the charts for Le Ruppione, and I gotta be honest with you, it’s a tough stretch. This is a beach and reef setup that’s exposed to the swell, and it’s normally an advanced wave, but it’s inconsistent and rarely breaks. The next two weeks are looking pretty grim for paddling out.
The first real chance of anything even resembling a wave comes up on Friday the 24th of July. We’re looking at some early morning energy with a weak swell from the WNW at 3ft and a period of just 7 seconds. The combined swell energy is still low, sitting at 94. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE, which is about the only thing going for it. The water temp is about average for this time of year. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s very ordinary. You could probably get a few grovelly ones, but it’s not going to light your world on fire. That afternoon the wind swings onshore and gets stronger, so it’s a morning-only gamble if you’re desperate.
After that, it’s back to the same old story. From Saturday the 25th right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at tiny swell – mostly 0.5ft to 2ft from the west or WNW, with periods struggling to reach 5 seconds. The combined energy is almost non-existent, often in single digits. We get glassy conditions on the morning of the 28th of July, but there’s no swell whatsoever. That’s a skunk.
Even into early August, the pattern holds. The morning of the 2nd of August brings a little bit of life with a 2ft WNW swell at 6 seconds, but the energy is still weak at 31. The wind is light offshore from the east, so the surface will be clean. But it’s small, weak, and inconsistent. The best on offer in this whole 16-day window is that Friday the 24th of July morning, simply because it’s the only time the swell breaks the 2ft mark and the wind is clean. It’s not a standout, it’s just the least bad option. If you’re a kite surfer, the windy afternoons might look more interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a quiet period. Don’t sell your board, but don’t get your hopes up either.
Rusty.
