Alright, let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour for those who think that way. Rusty here, and I’m gonna be honest – this is a grim outlook for the next couple weeks. There’s a long, dry spell in the middle of July, and only one real bright spot way out at the end.
From Monday 6 July through to early Sunday 19 July, you can pretty much leave your board in the car. Swells are tiny, weak, and the conditions are mostly poor. Water temp is 25°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – about 2° warmer than average – so it’s nice for a swim, but not for surfing.
A few mornings have glassy conditions – like Tuesday 7 July morning, Friday 10 July morning, Saturday 11 July morning, and Sunday 12 July morning – but the waves are basically nonexistent. Swell heights stay under 2 feet, periods are short, and the combined energy is in the single digits. A couple afternoons have some clean cross-offshore wind, but again, there’s just nothing to ride.
Then from 11 July afternoon through to Friday 17 July evening, it goes totally flat for long stretches – over a week of nothing. It happens here sometimes, but it doesn’t make it any easier.
The one session worth circling on your calendar is Le Ruppione on Monday 20 July morning. That’s two weeks out, so it’s promising but not locked in. We’re looking at a clean 5 feet swell from the west, with a period of 7 seconds – not the long period stuff, but enough to get a few decent ones. Wind is cross-offshore from the southeast at 10 mph, which should keep the surface clean. Combined energy hits 245 (moderate wave energy), and for a beach and reef break that’s inconsistent, this is a real window. It’s an advanced spot, and crowds can show up sometimes, but after all that flatness, it might be nice and quiet.
Monday afternoon gets bigger – up to 7 feet – but the wind swings to a cross-on from the SSW at 10 mph, making it choppy and a mess. That’s experts-only territory.
Tuesday 21 July morning drops back to 4 feet from the west, with a light cross-off from the southeast at 3 mph – still clean, but the energy is lower at 168, and the surf will be more average.
So here it is: the one and only real shot is Monday 20 July morning at Le Ruppione. Everything before that is flat or tiny. After that, it fades again. Make that Monday morning your target if you’re holding out hope.
Rusty.
