The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the surf outlook for our little corner of the coast.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s grim. For the first ten days, from Friday the 31st of July all the way through to the 9th of August, the waves are tiny and the conditions are just plain messy. We’re looking at ankle-biters and knee-slappers for the most part, with a lot of cross and cross-onshore wind messing up any chance of a clean face. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is just about bang on average for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you're floating around doing nothing.
The swell energy is pathetically weak for most of this stretch, sitting in the low double digits, and the period is all over the shop – short and weak. The only real shift comes on the morning of Sunday the 9th of August. We finally see a proper pulse of swell, with a 6 ft swell from the WSW, and the combined energy jumps right up to a solid 606. That’s got some grunt, but it’s a cross-onshore wind and the forecast notes marginal surf conditions. It’s still a bit lumpy, but that’s the first real sign of life in ages.
Monday the 10th of August morning offers a glimmer with 4 ft from the WNW and a light cross-onshore breeze, but it’s still only a 1 out of 10 on the call. The energy is still moderate at 360, but the textures are holding it back.
Honestly, nothing in this whole 16-day window is a true standout. The spot is St Gilles Croix de Vie, and it’s normally very consistent, but this run is a bust. The only time the swell gets big enough to ride is on the 9th, but it’s not clean enough to call it a winner. If you’re a kiter, that Sunday morning might look alright with a strong 6 ft and a cross-onshore breeze, but for a paddler? It’s a tough watch.
