The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
First up, this is a quiet start. We've got a solid week-plus of nothing really worth paddling out for at Bud Bud (Big Island). The water is sitting at 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you'll be sweating in your wetsuit if you wear one.
From July 14th, right through to the 22nd, the swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is either onshore or cross-on, making it a choppy, messy mess. The combined energy is weak, barely cracking 100 (like 19, 11, 92), so it's just not doing anything. Later in that first week, we get some clean offshore conditions, but the swell is so small—0.3ft to 0.7ft, with periods around 8 to 11 seconds—that it's practically flat. It's frustrating, but that's how it goes sometimes.
The real action doesn't kick off until Thursday, July 24th. That Friday morning, the 24th, we see a 4ft swell from the WSW, with a 8-second period, and the combined energy hits 344. The wind is offshore from the ENE at 12 mph, so it's clean. This is the first sign of something decent. It's not a standout, but it's a start.
The one true standout, the session to circle, is Saturday morning, July 25th. That's the goods. We're looking at a clean 6ft swell from the WSW, with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 634. The wind is glassy, dead calm from the ENE at just 3 mph. That's going to be clean, fun, and well-shaped. It's a bit on the bigger side, so it's not for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it's a winner. The swell direction (WSW) matches the optimum for this break, so it should be lining up nicely.
After that, the swell drops back a bit, but Sunday morning the 26th still has a clean 4ft swell from the W with a 10-second period, and offshore winds from the E at 9 mph. It's good, but not the standout. Then the wind goes onshore again in the afternoons, so stick to the mornings.
The second week, from July 27th onward, gets messy again with onshore winds and lumpy conditions, and the swell is dropping. Not much to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The best window is Thursday the 24th through to Sunday the 27th, with Saturday morning the 25th being the absolute peak. Get out there early.
Rusty.
