The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a pretty bleak stretch at Bud Bud. You're looking at a long run of poor surf conditions, with the first glimmer of something half-decent not showing up until the start of spring. The water's sitting at 71°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Things kick off on Thursday afternoon, August 20th, with a weak, messy 3 ft W swell and a cross-on breeze. That wind is a killer, and it's the story for most of the next week. We get a bit of a clean-up on Saturday morning, August 22nd, with a light offshore wind from the east, but the swell is a tiny 2 ft from the west, so it's only really going to interest a longboarder or a beginner. The combined energy is a weak 52, so don't expect much push.
After that, it's a real desert. The wind turns offshore again on Sunday, but the swell drops to almost nothing. There's a long, dry spell of poor conditions right through the following week. The wind gets onshore and strong, and the swell, while it tries to build, is wind-affected and messy. We get a bigger pulse from the west-southwest on Thursday the 27th, with 7 ft of swell, but the wind is a strong onshore breeze, making it a total washout. That combined energy hits 642, but it's all for nothing.
The good news, if you can call it that, is that the forecast finally shows a change in the first week of September. On Thursday the 3rd, we see a clean cross-offshore wind with a 5-5 ft WSW swell. The combined energy is moderate at 232, and the wind is light. That's your standout. The waves won't be huge, but they'll be clean and rideable. Friday the 4th looks similar, with clean offshore winds and a 3-4 ft west swell.
So, the bottom line is you've got a big gap of nothing until the 3rd of September. That Thursday and Friday are your best bet, but it's a long-range call, so keep your fingers crossed. Before that, don't bother paddling out unless you love frustration.
