The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk Bud Bud in feet and miles per hour, because some of you still think in those numbers.
We’re looking at a long dry spell, so don’t rush to load the board. The first hint of a real wave won’t come until late in the run. Starting Sunday the 19th of July, it’s flat to tiny – ankle-slappers at best. The water is 72°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the ocean feels nice, but there’s nothing to ride. The whole first week is tiny west swell, under a foot. Winds go offshore or light here and there – Monday the 20th morning has 30 mph offshores keeping it clean – but with wave heights barely hitting 0.7 ft and wave energy in the single digits, you’re not surfing. It’s glassy but empty.
By Saturday the 25th of July morning, we see a little bump to 2 ft from the northwest, with energy at 52, but the period is a short 5 seconds. That afternoon gets wrecked by 35 mph cross-onshore winds. Not your friend. That same pattern of small west-northwest swells and choppy afternoons keeps going through the end of July. Monday the 27th morning is clean with light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s only 1 ft. Afternoon sees a little more push – 2 ft and energy up to 56 – but the wind is blowing 30 mph from the west-northwest, cross-onshore and bumpy.
The real window, and honestly the only one, comes on Wednesday the 29th of July morning. Bud Bud finally gets a tiny but clean little pulse: 1 ft from the northwest with a 12-second period, energy reads 56. Wind is light from the southeast at 6 mph, cross-offshore, so it’s glassy. That longer-period groundswell gives those little waves some shape and push. It’s small – bring a longboard – but it’s the one morning where you can actually catch something clean. After that, it’s back to small and choppy.
The first few days of August don’t bring any change. Mornings are clean but flat – under a foot, energy in the teens. Afternoons are cross-onshore and messy. No big swells coming, no standout. This is a quiet stretch, and Wednesday the 29th is the only day worth marking.
Rusty.
