The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a long 16-day window for Bud Bud, but I’m not gonna lie to you – it’s a tough stretch. The overall pattern is dominated by poor surf conditions, with onshore winds and choppy water ruining the party for most of it. The water is sitting at 71°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so at least the temperature won’t give you an excuse to stay home.
The first real chance to paddle out doesn’t come until Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell rolling in from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak at 52. But the wind is a light easterly breeze, blowing offshore. That means the surface will be clean. It’s not going to be pumping, but it’s surfable. Just don’t expect much push.
After that, we hit a big gap. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of August, the guidance is a write-off. Swell drops to almost nothing, and when it does pop up again, the wind is on it or cross-on. There’s a pulse on the 25th of August with a 6ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a short 8 seconds and the wind is howling onshore at 15 mph. That’s a messy, blown-out mess. The combined energy hits 432, but it’s useless for a clean wave.
Moving into the first week of September, the pattern doesn’t improve. The 31st of August has a 6ft swell from the west with a very long 12-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1428. That’s a lot of power. But the wind is onshore at 15 mph, and the conditions are described as poor. This one is a classic case of a long-period groundswell that would be better suited for a point or reef, but at Bud Bud, it’s just going to be a lumpy, blown-out shorebreak. Definitely for experts only if you’re brave enough, but honestly, the kite surfers will be having a better time.
The only other flicker of hope is Saturday morning, the 29th of August. A 5ft swell from the west, 8-second period, with a light cross-onshore breeze. The energy is 478, which is moderate to strong. It’s still not ideal, but it’s the closest thing to a tickle we get. Don’t get your hopes up.
Overall, there’s no standout session in this 16-day window. The best bet is the small, clean windows on Saturday the 22nd, but even then, it’s marginal. If you’re desperate, that’s your moment. Otherwise, I’d be checking the forecast again in a few days.
Rusty.
