The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the outlook for Bud Bud (Bud-Bud). Let’s be straight up – this is a tough run, no two ways about it. The water’s sitting at 71°F and that’s pretty average for the time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
Right now, we’re looking at a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions. From Tuesday the 18th all the way through to Friday the 21st, it’s mostly poor surf with small, weak waves and messy wind. The swell energy is barely a whisper, with values from 10 to 341 (moderate) – but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, chopping it all up. Not worth paddling out, honestly.
The first real glimmer comes on Saturday the 22nd of August. Early morning, there’s a glassy moment with a light SSW breeze – dead calm – and the swell is 2ft from the west, period 9 seconds. The energy is weak at 53, but it’s clean. That’s the only window in the whole 16-day stretch that’s even surfable, and it’s still very ordinary. After that, Sunday the 23rd morning has a tiny 1ft swell with a clean cross-off breeze, but the energy is only 26 – hardly enough to stand up on.
Then we hit a massive gap. From the 23rd afternoon right through to the 25th, it’s tiny, weak, and mostly wind-affected. Monday the 24th morning has a brief offshore breeze from the ENE, but the swell is just 1ft with a 6-second period – short and weak. Not worth a second look.
The next possible chance is Wednesday the 26th of August morning. There’s a 3ft swell from the west, period 8 seconds, with a clean cross-off breeze from the SE. The energy is moderate at 134, but it’s still rated as very ordinary. The afternoon gets messy again with onshore wind.
By Thursday the 27th of August, the swell jumps up to 7ft in the morning from the WSW, period 9 seconds, and the energy is 690 – that’s strong. But the wind is onshore at 19 mph, so it’s blown out and messy. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, the conditions are poor. Friday the 28th keeps the strong energy (800) but same story – onshore wind and chop.
The rest of the run into September is tiny, with weak energy and cross-onshore winds. There’s one more glassy moment on Sunday the 30th of August morning – 2ft from the west, period 8 seconds, with dead calm air – but the energy is only 34. It’s clean, but it’s a knee-slapper.
The standout across the whole 16 days? Honestly, it’s Saturday the 22nd of August morning. That glassy, clean 2ft wave with a cross-off breeze is the only time you’ll get a clean, rideable wave. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too blown out. Bud Bud is a beginner-friendly spot, exposed to a WSW swell, but it’s rarely breaking well, and this forecast proves it.
The only other note – the swell on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th August is over 8ft, so that’s strictly for experts, but the wind is rubbish. If you’re into kiting, the strong onshore winds and solid swell might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer? Not much here.
Rusty.
