The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Bud Bud.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the surf outlook for Bud Bud is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor conditions, and honestly, there’s no standout session that’s going to get the heart racing for a long time. The first usable surf doesn’t even show up until the 23rd of August, and even then, it’s not much to write home about.
From the 23rd through to the end of August, it’s a real grind. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with periods that are all over the place – some long 13-second groundswell on the 23rd, but it’s coming from the WSW which is the optimum direction for the break. The problem is the wind. It’s onshore or cross-offshore most of the time, and the combined wave energy is weak, with readings like 24, 21, or 18. It’s just not doing anything. The water temperature is sitting at 70°F, which is about 1°F warmer than average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
Then on the 27th and 28th of August, we see a bit of a pulse. The swell jumps to 4 ft to 5 ft, with a period of 8 to 9 seconds, and the combined energy climbs into the 200s and 300s. That’s moderate energy, but the wind is hammering it from the WSW, blowing 16 to 40 mph, straight onshore. The wave comment is “poor surf conditions” across the board. It’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. For a beginner spot like Bud Bud, that 5 ft swell is pushing the limits, and with that wind, it’s not for the faint of heart. Honestly, this setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
The 31st of August brings a similar story: 5 ft swell, but cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions. Still no good.
Finally, on the 1st of September, we get a tiny glimmer. Tuesday morning is glassy with a 3 ft W swell, period of 9 seconds, and combined energy of 150. The wind is from the NW at 3 mph, glassy. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and the score is a 1 out of 10. That’s the best it gets for the whole 16-day run. The break is “fairly consistent,” so it’s not a total write-off, and the direction is WSW, which is the optimum. But it’s a 3 ft swell, and it’s just ordinary. For a beginner spot, that’s rideable, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
After that, it’s back to tiny, wind-affected junk through the 4th of September, with swells dropping to 0.3 ft. The 5th of September has another glassy morning, but the swell is only 1 ft, period 10 seconds – a long period groundswell, but it’s so small. The 6th and 7th of September have a bit more size, but the wind and chop ruin it again.
The one standout? If you’re desperate, the 1st of September Tuesday morning is the only window where you might get a clean, glassy wave. It’s a 3 ft W swell, glassy, and it’s the only time the conditions align. But it’s ordinary. For a beginner spot, it’s a safe, small day. Just don’t expect any barrels.
Overall, it’s a long, dry spell. The lack of consistent surf, combined with persistent onshore winds, means Bud Bud is mostly a no-go for the next two weeks. The glassy window on the 1st is the only real chance, and it’s a quiet one.
Rusty.
