Alright, let’s get real here. I’ve looked over what’s on offer for Bud Bud and, honestly, it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a solid 16-day run ahead, but the surf just isn't cooperating. This is a flat spell for sure.
For the foreseeable future, the swell is tiny and weak. We’re looking at mostly 1ft to 2ft of swell, and not much energy behind it (combined swell energy is often a measly 14 to 41 – very weak). The swell direction is mostly straight out of the West, which isn't the magic combo for this spot. The wind is a problem almost every day – mostly onshore or cross-onshore, which is going to chop it up.
Monday, July 6th, through Sunday, July 19th, the story doesn’t change. You are looking at poor surf conditions day after day. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing special to report there. There are a couple of moments where the wind goes glassy, like Saturday morning, July 11th, with a light southerly and glassy conditions, but with a 1ft West swell and a period of only 8 seconds, there’s just not enough oomph to make it worthwhile.
There’s a hint of a cleaner setup on Wednesday morning, July 15th and again that afternoon, with a moderate offshore wind from the ENE and NE, giving it a clean look. But again, 1ft is ankle-snappers at best. The energy is weak (18-25). It’s a tease.
The only time we see a tiny pulse of something is right at the tail end. Monday morning, July 20th, swell bumps up to 2ft from the West, and by Monday afternoon it’s 3ft from the WNW, with combined energy hitting 100 (moderate). The problem? The wind is onshore from the west and cross-onshore from the west. It’ll be a messy, choppy mess. Then Tuesday, July 21st, we get a similar 2-3ft from the west, but again, cross-onshore wind and rain showers.
So what’s the best of a bad bunch? There is no true standout. If you’re absolutely jonesing, the Monday afternoon of July 20th has the most energy (100) but it’s going to be onshore, choppy, and only suited for the most desperate. This spot is fairly consistent, so it tends not to stay this poor for long, and forecasts can change. But right now, I wouldn’t paddle out. For kite surfing, maybe you could have a play when the wind is strong from the W or SW and the swell is a little bigger, but for a surfboard? Leave it.
Rusty.
