The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Bud Bud are a real struggle. There’s no proper surf to get excited about, just a long, drawn-out run of tiny, weak waves and tricky wind. We’re talking about a solid week and a half of marginal conditions before we even see a glimpse of something ridable.
The whole forecast is a flat spell. From Thursday the 16th of July right through to the morning of Tuesday the 28th, the swell is barely a whisper – mostly 0.7ft to 2ft, with periods all over the shop but mostly short and weak. The combined energy is pitiful, often in single digits, and the wind is either howling onshore or frustratingly cross. It’s a lot of time watching a flat, bumpy ocean. You’d be better off checking the forecast again in a week.
The only time the ocean wakes up is around Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell climbs to 5ft in the morning out of the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 199 (moderate). That’s the biggest pulse we see, but the wind is a cross-shore from the NNW – not clean, but not total junk either. The afternoon picks up to 6ft from the same direction, energy hitting 279 (moderate), but the wind swings cross-onshore from the WNW, making it lumpy. This is really only for experienced surfers given the size, and the quality is still poor.
The most promising window sneaks in on Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning shows 4ft out of the WSW, period 8 seconds, and a moderate energy of 207. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the N, and the wave state is described as clean. That’s the best combo of the whole outlook – a clean, ridable wave for the experienced crew. The afternoon, however, gets messy again with a bigger 5ft swell but a strong cross-onshore wind. Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st of July offer small, waist-high leftovers (3ft) with clean-ish winds but very ordinary quality.
Honestly, if you’re a beginner, stay away once the swell pushes over 5ft, and even the cleanest morning on the 29th is still solid. For the average punter, there’s nothing here worth chasing. Given the persistent onshore and cross-shore winds, and the exposed beach setup, this stretch is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit drama there.
The takeaway? Keep your board in the car for a few weeks. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a long, flat run.
Rusty.
