The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight – the next 16 days at Bud Bud are looking pretty grim. From July 19 right through to August 3, there’s hardly any surf worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, the conditions are mostly messy, and the scores are bottom of the barrel. If you’re holding out hope, you’ll be waiting a long time.
The first real chance – and I use that word loosely – comes on Tuesday 28 July morning. We’ve got a 4ft swell rolling in from the WSW, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a moderate groundswell, and the combined energy is sitting at 520 – decent push for a beginner spot. But the wind is cross-onshore from the NW at 6 mph, so it’s not clean. The water is about average for this time of year, no anomaly noted. The swell direction is almost spot-on for Bud Bud’s optimum WSW, and the break is fairly consistent. But the conditions are marginal – the report calls it “questionable tide conditions.” Not ideal, but it’s the best we’ve got. If you’re a beginner, that 4ft might be a bit much, but it’s not over 5ft so it’s still doable. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so expect a few others with the same idea.
Then on Wednesday 29 July morning, we get a smaller 3ft swell from the W, 10-second period, combined energy 131 – moderate. The wind turns offshore from the ENE at 6 mph, making it clean. That’s a nice window for a few small waves. The water temp anomaly from earlier in the period was 2°C (about 4°F) warmer than normal, which is notable – much warmer than usual for July. But again, the swell is tiny, and the report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a light breeze offshore, so the surface will be glassy. If you’re desperate for a paddle, this is the next best option.
After that, the rest of the window is junk – tiny swell, onshore winds, or lumpy cross-shore chop. There’s a gap of several days with nothing worth mentioning. Honestly, this stretch is a write-off for Bud Bud. The spot is fairly consistent, but the forecasts are just not cooperating. It’s a beginner-friendly break, but the swell is too small to make it fun. For a lake or sea? No, it’s an exposed break, so it’s in the ocean.
Keep an eye on the charts – things can change. But for now, I’d save your energy and wait for a better window.
