The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down in old money. This stretch has been a real bummer at Bud-Bud. We’re looking at a whole lot of flat, poor surf from now through the end of July. The swell is tiny, and the wind is often all over the place. It’s a dry spell, plain and simple.
But, just when you’re about to give up, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The first real sign of life comes on the morning of July 28th. The swell nudges up to about 2ft from the west, with a 9-second period, and the wind goes glassy offshore from the northeast. Clean conditions, and moderate wave energy (83). It’s not big, but it’s rideable. The morning of July 29th is similar: 3ft west swell, clean with a light cross-offshore breeze, and the energy picks up (165). The clear standouts are the mornings of July 30th and July 31st. On the 30th, you’ve got 3ft west swell, light offshore winds, and clean conditions (180 energy). The 31st morning is a real gem: 3ft from the west, a gentle cross-offshore breeze, and the same clean conditions (132 energy). After a long dry spell, this is the good stuff.
The water temperature is about right for the season, nothing special.
Now, about Bud-Bud: it’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, and open to the west. The best swell direction is from the WSW, so the west swell we’re seeing is a good fit. With those clean mornings, it’s the time to go. Crowds are possible, but with the small waves, it shouldn’t be too packed.
The afternoons, though, are a mess. From the 28th on, the wind shifts hard onshore from the WNW, chopping things up. The afternoons on the 1st of August have a 4ft west-northwest swell, but it’s blown out with a fresh breeze and lumpy conditions. Not worth the paddle.
The first week of August has a few more clean mornings, like the 2nd and 3rd, with 2ft west swell and clean offshore winds, but the energy is on the weaker side (94 and 80). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
So, for the best waves, get out on the mornings of July 30th and 31st. Clean, small, and fun. That’s your window.
