The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at what’s comin’ down the pipe for Bud Bud. Honestly, I’ve gotta level with you—this 16-day window is a real heartbreaker.

We’re looking at a long, frustrating stretch of onshore or cross-onshore winds and messy conditions. The water temp is sittin’ at 71°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only warm thing in this forecast.

The first real sniff of anything surfable doesn’t even show up for days. From Sunday the 23rd onwards, we’ve got nothing but tiny, weak swells or big, blown-out junk. The swell energy is totally anemic, with numbers like 16 and 24 (weak energy) for the first few days, barely enough to get a ripple through the lineup. The wind is just relentless, coming straight onshore or cross-onshore from the WSW, and it’s messing up what little swell there is.

By Wednesday the 27th of August, the swell tries to pick up a bit, hitting 5ft, but the wind is still cross-onshore from the SW and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. The combined energy climbs to 287 (moderate), but it’s just not clean enough to get excited about.

Thursday the 28th of August is where things get proper wild. The swell jumps up to 10ft with a solid 10-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1690 (strong) in the morning, peaking at 1931 in the afternoon. That’s a lot of water moving around. But here’s the rub—the wind is howling onshore from the WSW at 28 mph, with thunderstorms. That’s not surf; that’s a survival mission. The waves will be a total stormy mess, and at that size, over 8ft, it’s strictly for the experts only, and even then, it’s a grim paddle. For a beach setup like this, the conditions look far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

After that, it settles down but never really cleans up. The rest of the run into the first week of September is a mix of small, weak swells, and the wind never lays off properly. Even when the swell drops to 0.7ft or 1.0ft, the wind is either onshore or cross-on, keeping it choppy and uninviting. The combined energy values drop right back down to weak levels, like 7 (very weak) on the 3rd of September.

There are no standout days here. The closest thing to a decent window might be the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September, with a light offshore from the NE and clean conditions, but the swell is only 2ft with a combined energy of just 30 (weak). It’s a tiny, clean wave, maybe a longboard or a foiler, but nothing to get the heart racing.

So, the bottom line: this is a blank run for the area. It’s not a shock, but it’s a bummer. We’ve got a 16-day forecast with no real good surf on offer. The swell arrives, but the wind is always in the wrong spot. Keep your gear waxed and your eyes on the long-range—forecasts can change, but right now, I’d find something else to do.

Rusty.
