The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer at Bud Bud over the next couple of weeks, in feet, miles per hour, and Fahrenheit.
Right off the bat, it’s a slow start. The first week is pretty much a write-off, with a run of poor surf conditions and very ordinary waves. We’re looking at a gap of about seven days from the start of the forecast period before anything worth paddling out for shows up. The swell energy is weak, and the winds are messy, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, with choppy surfaces. Not a lot to get excited about until we hit September.
The first hint of something better comes on the morning of Tuesday, 1st September. The conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary,” so it’s not a standout, but it’s a step up. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE at about 10 mph. It’s clean, but the energy is still weak. Still, a glimmer of hope.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, lands on the morning of Monday, 7th September. The wind is offshore from the ENE at about 16 mph, with a clean, moderate offshore breeze. The swell is 3 ft from the west, with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is moderate. It’s not huge, but it’s clean and workable. The direction is a solid match for the spot's optimum swell from the WSW, so expect some lined-up waves.
Then, the absolute highlight of the entire forecast. On the morning of Tuesday, 8th September, Bud Bud fires up. The conditions are described as “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” The swell jumps to 8 ft from the WSW, with a very long period of 18 seconds—that’s proper groundswell, with real energy. The combined energy is massive—strong to very strong. The wind is glassy, straight from the south at just 3 mph. This is a big, powerful swell, and with that glassy surface, it’ll be a thing of beauty. But be warned, at 8 ft with that long period, this is expert territory. The waves will have serious power, and the long period will make them break with a lot of shape. It’s a point break or reef-style setup, so it should handle that long-period energy well. On a day like this, you’ll want to be a confident surfer.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no need to worry about a weird anomaly.
Keep in mind, Bud Bud is a fairly consistent spot, but it can get crowded sometimes. On that 8th of September, expect a few locals out, but it’ll be worth the company.
Rusty, signing off.
