The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – the start of this period is a tough one. We’re looking at a real dry spell right through the first week. The water is sitting at 68°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a lot warmer than normal. But the waves? Not much to write home about. We’ve got tiny, weak swells crossing the 1 ft mark with periods around 8 seconds, which is just not enough to get excited about. The combined energy is weak, sitting at 17. It’s going to be a bit of a waiting game until things start to shake up.
The first real hint of life comes on Sunday, the 19th of July. The swell bumps up slightly to 3 ft from the NNW, with a period of 6 seconds, and the energy climbs to 74. The wind is offshore from the ENE at 12 mph, making the morning session clean. The notes say it’s surfable but very ordinary, so don’t expect fireworks, but it’s a start.
We then slide into another stretch of small, weak swells through the middle of the week. The energy stays low, mostly under 50, and the wind starts to mess things up – cross-shore, cross-on, you name it. It’s not looking great for a paddle.
The real action, and the standout of the whole outlook, is around the 26th of July, Sunday. The swell picks up to 6 ft from the NW with an 8-second period. The combined energy hits 606, which is a strong bump. Now, this is where it gets tricky. The wind is cross-on from the WNW at 9 mph in the morning, and then swings to a fresh cross-on from the NW at 19 mph in the afternoon. It’s going to be lumpy and choppy. The waves are there, but the wind is going to punch them up. This is a morning mission for the keen ones, and you’ll want to be a confident surfer – 6 ft is getting into the intermediate-to-advanced zone. The swell direction is NW, which is not the optimum WSW direction for Tronoen, so it’s not going to be perfect, but it’s the most energy we’ve seen.
After that, the energy stays moderate through to the end of the month and into August. On the 28th of July, we get a glimpse of something clean. The wind goes glassy from the SE at 3 mph, with a 4 ft swell from the NW. The energy is 171. The notes say “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” but with glassy conditions, that’s a rare window of clean surf. It’s a small window, worth a look if you’re desperate for a clean line.
Heading into the first day of August, the morning of the 1st shows a 4 ft swell from the NW with a 10-second period, energy at 245, and a clean cross-off wind from the N at 9 mph. The notes call it marginal, but it’s the best of the late run. The wind is okay, the swell is there, but it’s not a classic.
The bottom line: the best bet is the morning of Sunday the 26th of July for the biggest swell, but the wind will be a problem. The glassy morning on the 28th of July is your best chance for a clean, tidy surf, even if it’s not huge. After that, the 1st of August offers a decent morning session. It’s a patchy forecast, but there are a few windows to get wet.
Rusty.
