The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ll level with you—this stretch at Tronoen is a tough nut to crack. We’ve got a long stretch of mostly ordinary conditions before a couple of real gems that’ll make the wait worthwhile for the dedicated surfer. The water temp is sitting at a standard 66°F for this time of year, nothing unusual there.

From Monday the 17th through to the end of next week, it’s a real mixed bag with very little to get stoked about. The first few days are basically a bust: tiny waves, poor winds, and choppy mess. Monday and Tuesday have swell heights between 1ft and 2ft, with cross and cross-on winds, so don’t bother paddling out. Wednesday the 19th sees a pulse of energy with combined swell energy jumping to 170 (moderate) by the morning and 434 by the afternoon, but the swell is 4ft to 5ft and onshore winds wreck it. Thursday the 20th gets bigger—7ft to 6ft from the WNW—but it’s still cross-on and choppy. The energy numbers are climbing (766, then 1208), but the quality just isn’t there.

Friday the 21st morning is the first faint glimmer. We’ve got 5ft WNW swell, period 9 seconds (a bit short, so it won’t have much push), and a cross-off wind that leaves it clean but marginal. The combined energy is 327 (moderate). Not enough to call it good, but at least you’re not getting blown off your board. Saturday the 22nd morning stays tiny at 2ft from the W, but the wind turns cross-off and the water is clean—still, it’s flat and weak. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are more of the same: small, clean but undersized.

Now, here’s where it gets real. Wednesday the 26th of August is the first true standout. The morning delivers a lovely 6ft swell from the W, with a 9-second period and total glassy conditions—zero wind. That’s a session you’ll remember. Combined energy sits at 496 (moderate to strong). This is the best on offer for the near-term. Tronoen is exposed to this W to WSW swell, and the optimum direction from the WSW matches well here. It’s a fairly consistent spot, and crowds are possible sometimes, so get there early.

But the real crown jewel is Thursday the 27th of August morning. The swell bumps up to 8ft from the WSW, period 8 seconds (short-period, so a bit dumpy), and again, glassy conditions—wind from the NNE at 3 mph. This is going to be clean, powerful, and with combined energy at 639 (strong). This one is for the intermediate crowd; at 8ft it’s pushing into expert territory for some, but the glassy conditions make it manageable.

After that, the quality drops off a cliff. Thursday afternoon turns choppy, and Friday the 28th gets big and ugly—10ft to 15ft with onshore winds. Saturday the 29th is massive: 13ft to 10ft, combined energy hitting 4109 and 2244 (very strong), but it’s mostly onshore or cross-on, making it a wash. Sunday the 30th morning is worth a mention: 8ft from the W, period 7 seconds, glassy again, and the swell direction aligns with the optimum WSW. The combined energy is 1185 (strong). The comment says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and I’d agree—this is another standout, but only for those with the skills.

Beyond that, the end of the month into September is mostly poor with strong winds and big, messy swell.

So, bottom line: if you’re waiting for the good stuff, the mornings of Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th are your best bets. The 30th is promising but it’s over two weeks out, so keep an eye on it. For the rest, it’s a patience game.

Rusty.
