The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a long, hard look at what’s on the menu for our local patch over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough slog ahead, with a lot of noise and very little reward.
The whole 16-day window is a real mixed bag of frustration. There’s a big pulse of energy coming through, but it’s almost always paired with the wrong wind direction, leaving us with messy, choppy, and just plain ugly conditions. We’ve got a few fleeting moments of hope, but nothing that screams “drop everything and go.”
The first real chance to get wet doesn’t even come until Sunday the 23rd of August. Tronoen (our only spot in the frame) is looking at a tiny 2 ft swell from the WSW with a nice 11-second period. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SE, and the water is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year. The combined energy is a weak 77, so it’s not exactly packing a punch. It’s clean, but it’s very small. Sunday afternoon is the only session that’s truly surfable.
Then we hit a brutal, long gap. From Monday the 24th right through to the end of August, the conditions are just garbage. The wind is either onshore, cross-on, or too strong, turning even the bigger swells into a washing machine. On Thursday the 27th, we get a pulse of 8 ft swell from the SW, but it’s hammered by 30 km/h onshore winds, making it a lumpy, windy mess only suited for experts or kite surfers. The combined energy is a strong 733, but it’s worthless for a clean paddle.
Finally, into the first week of September, we get a little glimmer of hope. On Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, the wind turns light and cross-offshore from the north, with a clean 4 ft swell from the west. The combined energy is a moderate 289. This is easily the best-looking window in the whole forecast. The swell is a manageable size, the wind is clean, and the water is clear. It’s not a bomb, but it’s the only proper surfable session on offer.
The rest of the week into September is a washout of tiny, weak swell and poor wind. The 6th of September sees a cleaner 4 ft WNW swell, but by Sunday afternoon the wind swings onshore again. The final few days are just a reminder that winter is holding on, with a strong 40 km/h cross-shore wind on the 7th of September ruining any chance of a decent wave.
Bottom line: The whole 16-day stretch is a classic case of "almost, but not quite." We get the swell, but we can't get the wind to play nice. The only true standout is Tuesday morning, the 1st of September. The Tronoen left-handers will be clean, the swell is a fun 4 ft from the west, and the energy is moderate. It’s not a world-class day, but it’s the best we’re going to get. Get out there if you can, because the rest of the forecast is a long, frustrating wait.
Rusty.
