The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Tronoen. The entire 16-day window is a real struggle, with hardly a moment that’s worth paddling out for. The first stretch is rough, and it’s not until the very end that we might see a glimmer of something, but it’s a long wait.
The forecast is mostly a write-off through the first week. We kick off on Wednesday, August 19th, with a 5ft swell from the west, but it’s short period (6 seconds) and the wind is blowing straight onshore at 19 mph. The combined energy is weak, at 233, and the water temp is about average for this time of year at 65°. It’s a no-go. The whole rest of that week and into the next is dominated by cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy conditions. From Thursday the 20th through to Monday the 24th, we see swell around 6ft to 7ft, but it’s all messy. The weekend of the 22nd has a tiny 3ft swell from the northwest, but the wind is either cross-off or cross-shore, and the energy is weak (118-152). It’s just not worth it.
The second week doesn’t get much better. There’s a big pulse of energy forecast for the 27th of August, with 8ft swell from the west and a combined energy over 2000, but the wind is onshore and the conditions are poor. The same goes for the 31st of August and 1st of September, with 10ft to 13ft swell from the west and massive energy (over 3300), but the wind is strong cross-onshore, making it a lumpy, hostile mess. That’s big, powerful, and dangerous – strictly for experts only, and even then, it’s ugly.
The only real standout, and it’s a very slight one, comes right at the end on Thursday, September 3rd. The afternoon session shows an 8ft swell from the west-southwest with a period of 8 seconds, combined energy of 1023 (moderate), and the wind is light and onshore from the west-southwest at 6 mph. The guidance rates it as marginal, but it’s the best we’ve got. The swell is decent size, but the short period means it won’t have much punch. The light wind could make it clean, but it’s still onshore, so don’t expect perfection. The wave comment says "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions" – so it’s a gamble. For the most part, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the strong onshore winds and lumpy conditions.
Bottom line: A long, frustrating stretch of poor surf. The only real chance to get wet is Thursday afternoon, September 3rd, and even then, keep expectations low.
Rusty.
