The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Tronoen over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – the start of this run is a real heartbreaker. The waves are tiny, mostly under 2 ft, and the energy is weak (17-53). The water is a wild 70°F and running much warmer than normal for July, which is unusual, but that won’t help the surf. The wind is glassy early on the 18th, but the swell is just a ripple. It’s pretty much a bust for the opening week; we’re looking at a long gap of about 6 days with nothing worth paddling out for.
Things start to shift around the 24th and 25th, but it’s still messy. The swell starts to bump up a bit, especially on the 25th afternoon – 4 ft from the WNW, but the period is a short 5 seconds. The wind is onshore and choppy, so it’s not a clean wave. The energy is still moderate (71).
Then, from the 26th of July, the ocean wakes up. We get a solid pulse of swell, 6 ft from the WNW, but the wind is howling straight onshore from the SW and W, and the rain is moving in. The combined energy jumps to strong (392-766), but that’s raw, unrideable power. It’s a real shame – there’s plenty of water moving, but the surface is a mess. For a few days after that, the swell sticks around at 5 ft to 6 ft, but the wind stays bad from the west, keeping it lumpy and choppy. This stretch is more interesting for the kite surfers than for us.
The standout moment? It’s the later part of the run, around the 31st of July and into the 1st of August. On the 31st, we get a clean 6 ft swell from the WNW with a 10-second period, and crucially, the wind turns offshore from the NNE. The wave energy is strong (543) and the conditions are clean. That’s your best window. The swell direction is a bit off the optimum for Tronoen (which wants WSW), but when it’s this clean, you take it. These waves are a solid intermediate size; beginners might find it a bit much.
Moving into the 1st of August, the swell drops to 5 ft but the offshore wind from the ENE holds, with light rain. The energy is still strong (376). It’s a decent follow-up day, but the real gem is the 31st.
The second week is quieter. By the 2nd of August, the swell is down to 4 ft and the wind is light, but the conditions are just ordinary.
So, the pick of the litter is clearly the 31st of July. It’s a promising window with clean, offshore conditions and a punchy, long-period groundswell. The crowd profile says "sometimes", so keep your eyes peeled. For the rest, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
