The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Tronoen over the next couple of weeks.
First off, the water is surprisingly warm – about 70°F with a big 6°F anomaly, so it’s running much warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus if you’re paddling out.
But the surf? Honestly, it’s a quiet start. From Sunday 19th right through to Sunday 27th July, we’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves – mostly 0.7ft to 2ft – with wind directions that are either offshore or cross-off but the swell is just too small and short-period to do anything with. The combined energy is barely making it into double digits (36 down to 7), so it’s really flat. Monday 20th has a 0.7ft, 12-second groundswell but that’s way too small to ride. You’d be better off swimming.
Then things change a bit around the 28th. On Tuesday morning 28th July, a 8ft swell from the WNW with a 10-second period rolls in, and the combined energy jumps to 1210 – moderate. The wind is light cross-shore from the NNW, so it’s not clean, but the size is there. The forecast says “marginal” – likely a bit lumpy and the tide might be tricky. That’s more for experienced surfers; 8ft is getting big for beginners.
The real standout looks to be Wednesday morning 29th July. Early, we get 6ft from the NW with a 9-second period, and the wind is glassy – light easterly at 3 mph, dead calm. The combined energy sits at 502, which is moderate, and the conditions are described as “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s the cleanest window in the whole 16-day run. The swell direction is NW, not the optimum WSW, but with glassy offshore wind, Tronoen should hold some nice, clean waves. Crowds are possible here – it’s sometimes busy – so get in early. This is the morning to aim for.
After that, Thursday 30th morning has a tiny 2ft from the NW with a light cross-off breeze, but it’s small and ordinary. Then from Friday 31st onward, the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, the swell stays around 3–4ft, and the combined energy is moderate (200–300) but the chop kills it. The last few days of the outlook (1st–3rd August) are straight onshore from the west or southwest, with fresh winds up to 22 mph – that’s messy and not worth paddling out for.
So to sum it up: the first 9 days are a write-off, then you have a brief window around Tuesday 28th (big but bumpy) and Wednesday 29th (clean and fun). Wednesday morning is your best bet. After that, it’s back to poor conditions. For the long-range days (end of July into early August), the promising Wednesday morning is still a week away, so keep an eye on the forecast – it could tighten up, but as it stands, that’s the one to circle.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
