The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a good, hard look at what Tronoen’s got cookin’ for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you — this stretch is a real test of patience. We’re starting off with a whole lot of nothing, and I mean, a frustratingly long gap of flat, poor-quality surf that’s just not worth paddling out for.
The first few days, from Tuesday the 14th of July right through until Thursday the 23rd of July, it’s all tiny, weak waves. We’re talking 0.7 ft to 2 ft, mostly from the west and northwest, with combined swell energy barely getting into the double digits — you’re looking at numbers like 43 to 69, which is just a whisper of energy. There are a few moments of glassy or clean conditions, like Thursday morning the 16th with a glassy 1 ft from the WSW, and Friday morning the 17th with a clean 2 ft, but honestly, the lack of size and power means you’re just bobbing around. Not a single score above a zero on the cards. It’s a blank run, plain and simple.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope shows up on Friday the 24th of July. That morning, the swell jumps to 6 ft from the WSW, with a combined energy of 393 — that’s moderate energy building. But here’s the kicker: the wind is howling onshore from the WSW at 16 mph, and the period is a short, crumbly 7 seconds. It’s big, it’s messy, and it’s gonna be a washing machine. At that size, with onshore wind, honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The conditions are described as ‘poor surf conditions’ with an overall score of 0. This continues through the weekend.
The only potential standout in this entire outlook pops up on Wednesday the 29th of July. That morning we get a 5 ft swell from the west, with a period of 10 seconds and a combined wave energy of 460 (moderate energy). The wind is light from the SSW at 3 mph, giving us a light cross-onshore breeze with just small ripples. It’s still only a marginal call — rated a 1 out of 10 — but after two weeks of nothing, this is the closest thing to a surfable wave we’ve got. It’s an exposed spot, so it’ll take the swell, and the moderate energy suggests there’s a bit of push there, but the direction is right at the optimum (WSW). For the experienced crew, this is the one to watch. Don’t expect perfection, but at least there’s a wave to ride.
So, to sum it up: a long, dry spell of tiny, weak surf, then a messy spike in size on the 24th that’s better for kites, and finally a promising but still low-scoring option on the 29th of July. Stay patient, Tronoen.
Rusty.
