The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be honest, this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window looks pretty grim for decent paddle surfing at La Torche (Pointdela-Torche). The swell is just tiny for most of the run, and when it does start to pick up a little, the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, chopping everything up.
The water is sitting at 20° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for us.
The first real chance to even get wet is Sunday the 19th in the morning. We’ve got a clean, moderate offshore wind from the ENE, and a tiny 3ft swell from the NNW. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s not going to have much punch. The combined energy is weak (74). It’s surfable, but very ordinary – barely a knee-high dribbler.
After that, it’s a long stretch of poor surf and messy winds until the end of the month. The swell energy does climb later on, like on the 26th of July, where we see a 6ft swell from the NW with a moderate energy (606), but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy and ugly. It’s genuinely not worth paddling out.
The only other flicker of hope is Tuesday the 28th in the morning. The wind drops to glassy from the SE, and the swell is 4ft from the NW with an 8-second period. The energy is moderate (171). It’s probably the cleanest the waves will be, but the conditions are still described as “very ordinary.” It’s a Saturday morning in the middle of summer, so with “often” crowds and a setup that’s a beach and point, it’ll be busy, even for mediocre waves.
Honestly, for a place that’s usually fairly consistent, this is a shocking blank run. If you’re a kitesurfer, the afternoons with strong cross-onshore winds and building swell might be worth a look, but for a paddle surfer? I’d wax the board and wait for the next forecast. The models can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about here.
