The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get straight into it. The honest truth is we’ve got a pretty grim stretch ahead before some real juice shows up. The first week is a total bust, and you’ll be better off doing anything else. But don't cash in your chips yet, because the backend of the window has some serious potential.
The opening days are a write-off. Wednesday the 19th starts with a weak 4ft W swell at 5 seconds, and a fresh cross-onshore wind makes it a lumpy mess. It picks up to 6ft in the afternoon with a better 10-second period, but the wind is still all over it. Thursday the 20th sees the swell push to 8ft with a 9-second period, but the cross-onshore wind just chops it all up. Same story Friday, with 6ft and 5ft swells, but it’s not making the best of it.
The weekend is desperate. Saturday the 22nd drops to a weak 4ft, and Sunday the 23rd is even smaller, with a 3ft NW swell that’s barely a bump. Monday the 24th is a flat, clean day with nothing to ride. It’s a proper blank run.
We finally get a tiny pulse on Tuesday the 25th morning. A 1ft WNW swell with an 11-second period and clean offshore wind, but it’s not going to get the heart racing. That’s the only surfable window in almost a week. The rest of that week is a mix of tiny swells and onshore junk. Thursday the 27th has some size at 6ft, but it’s onshore and the period is short. Forget it.
Now, get this: the real action kicks off on Monday the 31st of August. It’s been over a week since we had a decent wave, so this is the one to circle. The morning starts clean with a 6ft W swell, a gentle offshore wind, and an 8-second period. That’s good, but the stand-out is the afternoon. The swell drops to 5ft, but the wind goes glassy, and the period is 7 seconds. This is creating “very good surf conditions.” This is your first true stand-out. Get in the water.
Then, things get serious. Tuesday the 1st of September brings a proper pulse of energy. The morning sees a 10ft WSW swell with an 8-second period and a clean cross-offshore wind. This is a big, powerful swell that will only be for the experienced crew. The afternoon drops to 7ft with the same period, but the wind swings cross. It’s still got plenty of push but it’s not as clean. This is the second stand-out, but it’s a challenging day by any standard.
After that, it fades fast. Wednesday the 2nd is back to a weak 4ft, and Thursday the 3rd is similar. The long-range outlook is promising, but it’s a way out, and forecasts can shift. Honestly, the 31st and the 1st are where it’s at. The 31st afternoon looks perfect, and the 1st is big and powerful. Everything before that is just waiting.
Alright, that’s the full picture. Keep an eye on the forecast for the 31st. That’s the one to get excited about.
Rusty.
