The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s see what the next couple of weeks are looking like for La Torche.
Honestly, the first week and a half is pretty grim. We’re looking at a long run of poor surf conditions from now, through the 18th of August, all the way up to the 29th. Most of the time, the wind is onshore, cross-onshore, or just messy, with wave heights either too small or too wind-whipped to be any fun. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate for days, often in the double or low triple figures. It’s a real flat spell with nothing to get excited about.
The only glimmer in that first stretch comes on Friday morning, the 21st of August. It’s still marginal, with waves around 5 feet from the WNW at a 10-second period – that has a bit of push to it (energy reading 431) – but it’s cross-onshore with a light breeze. Clean enough to be worth a look if you’re desperate, but nothing to write home about.
Then we finally get a proper standout on Sunday morning, the 30th of August. This is the best call of the whole period. La Torche will see clean 5 foot waves from the WNW, with a 9-second period and the wind going glassy – just about perfect conditions. The combined swell energy is a solid 355, and that glassy surface means the waves will be smooth and inviting. For an intermediate surfer, this is the session to aim for. The swell direction (WNW) lines up nicely with the optimum west-southwest direction this spot loves, so expect some nice running lines on the point.
The following week gets another mention on Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September. There’s a bigger 10 foot swell from the west, 10-second period, with light onshore wind from the west (15 km/h). The energy reading jumps to 1660 – that’s a lot of water moving, and this is serious size. For experts only. The wind isn’t perfect but it’s light, and the long-period groundswell energy will have power. The waves could be thick and fast, but beginners and intermediates should sit this one out.
So to wrap it up: don’t hold your breath for the next week and a half. The 30th of August Sunday morning is your true standout day – clean, glassy, and fun-sized. The 2nd of September Wednesday morning offers big, expert-level waves, but it’s a tricky call this far out. For the rest, it’s wait and see.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the sky, and I’ll see you in the water when it cleans up.
