Alright folks, Rusty here with the lowdown on La Torche for the next couple weeks.
Right now the water’s about 65°F, which feels a touch warmer than usual for early July – not bad.
Don’t even bother with Saturday afternoon, July 4th. We got 3ft from the W, 10-second period, but a 30 km/h NW wind is blowing straight across it, making a mess. Energy’s weak (238). Just a no-go.
First real chance is Sunday morning, July 5th. Tiny – only 2ft from the W – but the wind goes glassy out of the ENE at just 5 km/h. Clean as a whistle. Energy’s still low (160), but if you want a small, glassy session, this is it.
Monday morning, July 6th is similar. 3ft from the WNW, 9 seconds, a light offshore ESE breeze at 15 km/h. Energy is weak (106), but it’s clean. A longboarder’s delight.
Then the wheels fall off. From Monday afternoon all the way through to Sunday morning, July 12th, it’s mostly choppy, onshore, or just too small. The swell never gets above 2ft, and the wind is often cross-on or worse.
On Sunday morning, July 12th, we get a break. A light cross-off SE breeze at 10 km/h, 3ft from the WNW, 9 seconds. Clean, energy up a bit to 154. Still nothing to write home about.
Another quiet stretch follows. Wednesday morning, July 15th is clean with a cross-off SSE breeze, but it’s only 2ft from the W. Meh.
Now, the big stuff shows up mid-month, but it’s ugly. Thursday afternoon, July 16th – 7ft from the WSW, 8-second period, combined energy at 532. Solid power. But the wind is a fresh cross-on NW at 30 km/h. It’ll be a washing machine. More for the kite crew.
Friday, July 17th is the same deal. 7ft from the W, energy at 542, but again cross-on winds up to 30 km/h. Big, lumpy, and blown out.
The last chance is Sunday morning, July 19th. Light cross-off NNE breeze at 10 km/h, 3ft from the WSW, 8 seconds. Clean, but average.
Best of the bunch? If you’re a patient soul on a log, Sunday morning, July 5th is the cleanest window. The bigger swells later on look tempting but the wind will ruin the party.
Catch you in the water. Rusty.
