The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one for our region. Over the next 16 days, the surf is going to be a real struggle with barely any rideable waves on offer.

Right now, we’re looking at a long, quiet stretch. The first week kicks off with barely a pulse. Through Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd, we’re stuck with tiny, weak swell under 3ft, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The combined energy is virtually nothing, sitting at just 2 to 24 units. Monday the 3rd through Thursday the 6th is even worse – flat spells with zero energy, and when there is a tiny bump, it’s under 0.7ft and poor. The water temperature is a massive 4° warmer than normal for this time of year, which is very unusual.

The first real glimmer comes on Friday morning, August 7th, at Les Sablettes (a beginner spot that rarely breaks, so don’t get your hopes up). We’ll see a 4ft swell from the west, with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 142 units – moderate energy. The wind is light cross-offshore from the northwest, so the waves will be cleaner than anything we’ve seen. But the break is inconsistent, and it’s a small, short-period swell, so expect weak, crumbly waves. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The afternoon gets blown out by a fresh westerly.

After that, we’re back into a pattern of tiny, poor-quality surf through the middle of August. The mornings of Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th offer glassy conditions but with swells under 2ft. The energy is weak, and the waves are just too small. There’s a long gap with no real recommendations until the middle of the second week.

Friday morning, August 15th, brings another small uptick: a 3ft west-northwest swell with a 6-second period and 43 units of energy. It’s a light cross-onshore wind, so the surface will have a few ripples. But again, it’s tiny and inconsistent. The afternoon gets chopped up by a moderate westerly.

Honestly, this is a blank run for the area. Les Sablettes rarely breaks, and even when it does, the conditions are poor. With such weak swell and short periods, there’s no real power. If you’re desperate for a paddle, Friday morning August 7th is your best shot, but keep the expectations low. For the rest of the period, it’s more of a beach day than a surf day.

Rusty.
