The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat. Rusty here. Let’s talk about this stretch of coast for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bleak outlook. From the 15th of July all the way through to the 30th, we’re looking at a proper flat spell. A long gap of nothing but tiny, weak surf. The only spot in the picture is La Guillotine, an inconsistent sandbar that needs a solid southerly push to do anything, and it’s just not getting it.
The water temperature is sitting at about 77°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a very unusual anomaly, so the water feels like a warm bath, but that’s about the only positive.
The first real glimpse of anything comes right at the tail end. On the morning of Thursday, July 30th, a tiny pulse of SSE swell shows up at about 2ft, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 38. The wind is offshore and light from the north, so the surface will be clean. That’s the best of a very bad lot, but it’s still poor surf. The period is short, the swell is tiny, and it’s an inconsistent sandbar. For a seasoned surfer, it might be a knee-high session with a clean face, but don’t get your hopes up.
The rest of the days are a total write-off. Tiny waves, often under 1ft, and mostly cross-onshore winds messing it up. There are plenty of mornings with clean, glassy conditions, but with absolutely no swell to ride. It’s a classic case of “no waves, just flat water.”
If you’re desperate, the 30th is your only real shot, and even then, keep your expectations low. The breaks are too weak for paddle surfing, and the setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a surfer on a shortboard. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a tough run.
Rusty.
