The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. I gotta be straight with you—this isn't the kind of forecast that gets the blood pumping. For the next couple of weeks, the Mediterranean's just not playing ball. We've got a 16-day window, and honestly, it's a bust. The first bit of energy that might be worth a paddle doesn't show up until the 15th of August, so we're looking at a solid 10-day gap of flat to tiny, messy junk. It's one of those stretches where the forecast can change, but right now, the models are saying "don't bother."

Let's look at the one spot we've got on the radar, Marseille - La Verrerie (France). This is a reef break, and it's a tricky one for advanced surfers only—inconsistent as hell. The water is a toasty 79°F, and that's a massive 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, which is super unusual.

The first sniff of something happens on the morning of Saturday, August 15th. We see a weak swell bump up to 2ft from the WSW, but the wind is a messy cross-shore at 15 mph, making it a choppy, poor surf situation. Not the one.

The afternoon of Saturday, August 15th is where the only real spike comes in. Swell picks up to 4ft from the W, with a period of 6 seconds—that's short-period, weak windswell. The combined energy climbs to 104 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 18 mph, creating lumpy, blown-out conditions. The rating is zero, and it's described as poor surf. Honestly, with that wind and the poor quality, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

After that, it fades back into the weeds. The morning of Sunday, August 16th has 4ft from the WNW, but again, a fresh cross-shore wind at 21 mph is ruining it. The rest of the week is a write-off with tiny to no swell and onshore winds.

There's a tiny window on the morning of Tuesday, August 18th with a clean 2ft from the SW and a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. That's clean, but it's barely a ripple. Don't get your hopes up.

So, what's the best on offer? The only standout, if you can call it that, is the afternoon of Saturday, August 15th at La Verrerie, but only if you're an expert who doesn't mind horrendous wind. The rest of the period is a flat spell. It's a rough run for the region, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Rusty.
