The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break this down. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for any real surf at Penfoul. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and messy waves ahead. The swell energy is mostly in the low double digits, which is about as weak as it gets. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Thursday the 13th, and even then, it’s a brief window.

For the first several days, through the 12th, we’re dealing with tiny surf, mostly under 3ft, with a lot of cross-shore and onshore winds messing things up. The mornings offer a bit more hope with lighter winds, but the swell just isn’t there. There’s a lot of short-period, weak, windswell that will have you paddling around for nothing. You’ll be scratching your head wondering where the ocean went. This is a proper flat spell.

Now, let’s talk about that one standout. On the morning of Thursday the 13th, things finally line up. We’ve got a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the NE, and the swell pushes up to 4ft from the W with a 10-second period. The energy jumps to 225, which is a decent push of moderate energy. That’s your window. Penfoul (beach and reef) is fairly consistent, so it should be breaking. The wind will be light, and it’s due to be clean. It’s not huge, but it’s the best we’re going to see for a while. It’s a beginner-friendly size, so it's a good day for a fun, uncrowded session. The water is sitting at 61°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want the rubber.

After that morning, the wind swings around and messes it up again for the afternoon. The rest of the second week just doesn’t have any other real standouts. There are some days with a bit more size, like the 16th with 5ft, but it’s bringing onshore winds and looks like a messy crumble. The energy is moderate, but the quality isn't there. It will be a battle, not a pleasure.

We end the window with that glassy morning on the 19th, but the swell has dropped right back down to 1ft. It’ll be pretty, but no waves to ride. So, if you’re looking for something, mark your calendar for the morning of the 13th. It’s a short ride, but it’s the only real chance we’ve got.

Rusty.
