The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Been a bit of a dry spell for Marseille - Boutofolle, but let's get into what's cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
Look, I gotta be straight with you: the first week and a half is a tough one to swallow. From the 5th of August right through until the 14th, it's a whole lot of nothing. Almost a solid nine days of flat, weak, or just plain messy conditions. The wind's been all over the place, and any swell that shows up is tiny and short-period, just not worth paddling out for. It's a proper blank run for this area, and we see it from time to time.
Now, for the morning of the 14th of August, things start to get a bit interesting. The swell picks up a whisker – around 3 ft from the west with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 77 (weak), and the conditions are described as "clean". The wind is a light offshore out of the NNW at 6 mph, which will keep the face looking tidy. It's surfable, but it's ordinary. The afternoon sees the swell push to 4 ft, and the energy jumps to 125 (moderate), but the wind swings around to a cross-onshore from the SSE at 9 mph, stirring up a chop. So, only the morning session is worth looking at here.
The 19th of August morning is probably the standout, but it's still a long way off so don't book the week off work yet. We're looking at a 5 ft swell from the west-northwest, with a period of just 6 seconds. The combined energy is 148 (moderate), and the wind is a cross shore breeze from the NW at 9 mph. That's a bit of a mixed bag. The 20th of August morning is another one to watch: a clean 4 ft swell from the west-northwest with a period of 5 seconds, 93 energy (weak), and glassy conditions with a light SSE wind. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Honestly, if you're a beginner, these swells are small enough to be manageable, but the lack of quality and consistency is the real killer. For a kite surfer, the onshore winds and choppy conditions on some afternoons might be more interesting than for us paddle folk.
Rusty out.
