The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's have a look at what's cookin' in the Cannes area over the next couple weeks.
Honestly, it's a tough outlook, mate. We're looking at a real quiet stretch of surf. The water is absolutely cooking, sitting at a very unusual 83°F right now, which is 9°F warmer than average for this time of year down at Mandelieu l'Aerospatiale, but that's about the only exciting number. The wave energy is just flat for the first week and a half or so, with many days showing zero combined energy.
The first tiny breath of life shows up on Friday the 21st of August, but it's a storm risk day with a weak 1ft swell at a short 5 seconds, and the wind is onshore. We get a little bump to 3ft that afternoon, but it's messy with a cross-shore breeze at 12 mph. Don't bother paddling out. Saturday the 22nd sees a glassy clean 1ft waft through in the morning, but it's just too small to get excited about.
We then hit a major gap. From Sunday the 23rd all the way through to Tuesday the 1st of September, there’s essentially no energy. Most days show a combined energy of zero or single digits, with those tiny 0.3ft to 1ft pulses being nothing but flat spells between them. A few glassy mornings pop up, like the 25th and the 31st of August, but there's just no swell to push.
Finally, on Tuesday the 1st of September, we see a little flicker. The morning is glassy, and we get a 1ft swell from the SSW at 5 seconds and a combined energy of 7. It's still tiny and weak, but it's the cleanest window we get. The afternoon sees it build a touch to 2ft but the wind swings cross-onshore.
Look, for this region, a blank run like this happens. The best I can say is keep an eye on the 1st of September morning. It's a glassy, clean session, but you'll need a log and a whole lot of patience for those knee-high dribblers. The rest of the window into the start of September doesn't look much better. It's a write-off for paddle surfing; the bigger, windier afternoons like the 28th of August or 5th of September might be more interesting for a kite session than a surf.
Rusty.
