The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into what’s happening for Diano Marina over the next couple of weeks.
First off, let’s talk about the water. It’s a balmy 83°F at the moment, which is a full 8°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s seriously unusual – you’ll be in boardies, no question.
Right, the surf. Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burner for the first week. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak energy. The first few days from Wednesday the 19th into the weekend are mostly just ankle-to-knee high stuff, with the combined swell energy rarely cracking three digits. The wind is light and often cross-off in the mornings, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s just not enough push to get excited about.
Things start to perk up on Friday the 21st morning. We see a little 3ft SSW swell puffing in with a period of 6 seconds. The energy is still weak (62), but it’s clean with a light W cross-off breeze. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon jumps up a bit to 5ft, but the wind swings SW and goes cross-shore, messing up the surface. Not worth it.
The real standout, and the best bet for the whole outlook, hits on Tuesday the 25th of August. The afternoon kicks in with a punchy 7ft SW swell, but here’s the thing – the south-westerly wind is howling at 19 mph, coming straight across the break. The combined energy is a solid 360, but it’s going to be lumpy, cross-chop and a bit of a battle. This is a classic case of the swell being there, but the conditions turning it into more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle-surfing one. The early morning of the 25th is a waste at 3ft.
Thursday the 27th afternoon sees another 7ft pulse, but again, it’s accompanied by strong SW winds at 22 mph, making for a lumpy, cross-shore mess. The energy is strong at 386, but it’s not going to be clean.
The next real chance looks like Friday the 28th morning. We get a 6ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind is light from the NE, crossing the swell direction. The energy is a healthy 483, and with those light winds, it could be the most rideable day of the period. The morning window is the call.
After that, the surf fades away again into the start of September. There’s a tiny blip on the 2nd of September with a 8ft SSW swell in the afternoon, but the onshore wind will chop it up. The energy is massive at 1038, but it’s marginal.
So, if you’re paddling out, your best window is Friday the 28th of August morning. The waves will be a solid 6ft, and the light wind should keep it cleaner than anything else. For the more experienced crew, the afternoon of the 25th has the size, but you’ll be trading bumps for power.
Stay salty,
Rusty
