The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the St-Laurent-du-Var stretch over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough outlook. We're looking at a real flat spell. The first sixteen days are pretty much a write-off for any decent waves. There's a big gap of no surf, so don't be getting your hopes up for a quick fix.
The first hint of any ripple comes on Friday afternoon, the 24th, but it's a sad 2ft from the east with a period of just 3 seconds. The combined energy is a measly (6), and it's cross-on from the ESE, so it'll be choppy and messy. That's a no-go.
Saturday the 25th morning shapes up a bit cleaner with a light offshore breeze from the NNE, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft. It's just not enough to push through. The rest of the week is more of the same – tiny bumps, mostly from the south or east, with clean winds but zero power. The combined swell energy is often just 1, which is about as weak as it gets.
The water temp is a scorching 84°F, which is a full 11°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That's very unusual, so you'll be in for a warm bath, but don't expect any waves to go with it.
We creep into August, and still nothing. The 3rd of August has a tiny 1ft east swell with a 3-second period, but it's a cross-on breeze again. The 5th of August has a glassy 1ft from the southwest, but it's weak. The 6th of August morning is dead flat and glassy, with a tiny 1ft swell from the SSW that's got a combined energy of just (10). It's not enough to ride.
The best of a bad bunch is probably the morning of Thursday the 6th of August. It's glassy, clean, and there's a hint of 1ft swell from the SSW. It's a river mouth, so it can sometimes pick up a bit of shape, but the energy is still very weak. This is a real stretch of the imagination, though.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, there's nothing to get excited about. The breaks are all exposed, but the swell just isn't there. Given the poor surf quality, the mostly onshore or cross-on winds, and the beach/river setup, this looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. It's a proper blank run for this area, and it's not unusual to see this kind of flat spell. Forecasts can always change, but right now, it's a waiting game.
