The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been looking at the charts for your area. Gotta be honest: this 16-day stretch is a real dud. The first hint of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Saturday the 18th, and it’s tiny.
The only spot we’ve got is Tri Ponti or La Scaletta (San Remo). It’s a beginner-friendly break, exposed to the open sea, but the ocean just isn’t playing ball. The water’s about normal for the time of year.
Saturday morning the 18th: a 2ft swell from the SSW, short period of 5 seconds, combined energy of 21 (weak). Wind is light offshore from the NE, so it’s clean, but the waves are poor. Afternoon turns cross-shore with a 1ft swell – not worth it.
Sunday the 19th: 2ft swell from the S in the morning, offshore NNE wind, clean but poor. Afternoon is a cross-onshore mess with a 0.7ft swell.
Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd – it’s all the same: tiny swells (0.3ft to 2ft) and poor conditions. Energy is mostly in the single digits. Thursday the 24th morning has glassy conditions and a 0.3ft swell – just a mirror.
From the 18th right through to August 2nd, every day is “poor surf conditions.” The biggest swell is 3ft, and the longest period is 6 seconds – that’s weak, short-period windswell. The combined energy barely hits 48 or 55 (still very weak). The wind is often offshore or glassy, but with no wave energy, it’s a beautiful car with no engine.
For a beginner spot, this is good for paddling practice, but there’s nothing to ride. The lack of consistent swell from the good SSW direction means it’s more of a flat-water paddle. The cleanest windows are the glassy mornings on July 24th, 25th, 27th, 30th, and August 2nd, but the swell is under 0.7ft. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s pretty normal.
Stay patient, mate. Forecasts can change, and it usually doesn’t stay this flat for long.
