The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you about this stretch of coast. We’re looking at El Masnou, and the honest truth is the next few weeks are looking pretty flat. There's nothing on the table worth paddling out for in the immediate future, so we're in for a long wait.
The first glimmer of anything happens on the morning of Friday, the 7th of August. That's a solid two weeks away. Before that, we've got a big gap of flat, tiny, or messy conditions. For most of July and into early August, the swell is barely a ripple – mostly 0.3ft to 2.0ft – with a lot of onshore wind and cross-shore chop. It’s a write-off. The water temperature is currently 80.8°F, which is over 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a warm bath, but there’s just no waves to enjoy it in.
Now, onto that Friday the 7th. The morning shows a little pulse of energy. We get a 2.3ft swell from the northeast, with a period of 6 seconds. That's a short-period, weak swell – the combined energy is only 48 (weak), so it's not going to have any punch. The wind is glassy, dead calm, which is a huge positive for the surface. It’ll be clean as a whistle. But the waves themselves will be small, weak, and fat. The forecast says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is about right. It’s a beginner-friendly size, but don't expect any power. This is a sandbar break that rarely breaks, so this is a rare opportunity to get wet, but keep your expectations on the floor. The optimum swell direction is from the ESE, and this is coming from the NE, so it’s not quite lined up right.
Honestly, this is a blank run that is pretty normal for the area in summer. There's simply nothing to get excited about. The second week offers nothing else. If you're desperate for a paddle in clean, flat water, the 7th morning is your only shot, but don't call it surfing.
