The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. If you’re looking at Roc San Cayetano for the next couple of weeks, you’re gonna need a whole lot of patience. It’s a bleak stretch, and the surf forecast for this area is looking mostly flat and pretty poor.

The water’s running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at about 80°, so it’s not going to be a shock to the system when you paddle out. But that’s about the only positive I can give you right now.

For the next week and a half, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. There are days with tiny, weak swell, but they’re not worth getting excited about. The wave energy is almost non-existent – we’re talking single digits for the combined energy on most days. A little bump on Wednesday the 9th with 2ft of short-period ESE windswell at 4 seconds won’t do much. The wind might be light, but with that period and size, it’s going to be a frustrating paddle for a gutless wave.

Things don’t get any better as we move through the following days. The swell tries to fill in a little on the afternoon of Wednesday the 9th, pushing up to 4ft from the east, but the period is still short at 7 seconds and the wind is howling from the WSW at 12 mph, making it a cross-shore mess. That’s not a surf day; that’s a day to stay on the beach.

The rest of the first week and into the second is a wasteland. We’re seeing days with nothing but wind, and days with tiny, short-period slop that’s breaking in all the wrong ways. It’s a long, blank run, and honestly, for a spot that rarely breaks anyway, this is a normal, frustrating stretch.

Now, there’s a little flicker of life at the very end of the window. On the afternoon of Wednesday, the 23rd of September, the models are showing a more promising pulse of swell. We’re looking at 4ft from the east with a slightly better 8 second period. The combined energy jumps to 187, which is a moderate reading and a huge step up from the single digits we’ve been seeing all window. The wind looks light and cross-onshore, so it might be a bit lumpy, but it’s the only real surf on offer.

For this spot, which is a point break that needs a decent swell, this is the standout of the period. But keep your expectations in check – it’s a long-range call, so it’s promising but not a sure thing. With swell over 5ft being too much for beginners, this 4ft is still manageable for the intermediate crew. Given how poor everything else is, if this holds, it could be the one worthwhile session in the entire 16-day window.

But for now, unless you’re desperate, you might want to find something else to do with your time. The board stays in the car for this one.

Rusty.
