The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Aiguaoliva over the next couple of weeks.
First up, I gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Aiguaoliva is a real tough one. This is a reef break that rarely breaks, and over this entire 16-day window, the models are showing just poor surf conditions every single session. There’s not a single standout, no session that gets the nod as the best on offer. It’s a flat, frustrating run.
The water temperature is sitting at 85 °F, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year – a solid 6 °F above average. That’s very unusual, but it doesn’t help the waves.
Looking at the first week, from Sunday the 23rd of August right through to Saturday the 29th, the swell is tiny. We’re talking 0.3 ft to 2 ft at best, with short periods of 4 to 6 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak, never cracking three digits – for example, just 12 (weak energy) on Sunday morning. Winds are a mix of glassy and clean conditions on a few mornings, like Tuesday the 25th and Friday the 28th, but with no real swell to work with, it’s a non-starter.
Into the second week, from Sunday the 30th of August through to Monday the 7th of September, there’s a slight bump. On Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon, we see the biggest swell of the period at 4 ft from the east with a period of 6 seconds, and combined energy of 92 (still weak). But it’s accompanied by a light cross-onshore wind, and the conditions are still described as poor. On Sunday the 6th of September morning, there’s a 3 ft south swell, period of 5 seconds, energy of 89, with a gentle cross-shore wind. Again, poor surf.
The swell direction is from the east and south, but the optimum swell direction for this spot is from the ENE. So even when there is a little bump, it’s not coming from the right angle.
Because Aiguaoliva rarely breaks and the swell is so consistently small and weak, this blank run is pretty normal for the area. There’s just nothing here to get excited about for paddle surfing. If you’re into kite surfing, the setup might look more interesting on those afternoons with a bit of wind, but for a surfer looking for a wave, it’s a long wait.
Hang in there, but don’t hold your breath.
