The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and we’ve got a flat spell ahead at Aiguaoliva. The whole 16-day window is a tough one, with only tiny, short-period slop and constant onshore winds messing things up. There’s really no surf to get excited about, and the water is a scorching 85°F — that’s 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual.
Looking at Saturday the 22nd of August, there’s a tiny 4ft easterly swell with a short 6-second period, and an easterly wind at 12 mph, so it’s blown out and messy — combined wave energy is weak (74). After that, things get even smaller. Sunday the 23rd morning has a glassy 2ft swell from the ESE with a 4-second period and light NNW wind at 3 mph, but it’s just too small to surf. Monday the 24th morning is glassy again with 1ft from the SE and no wind, but again, tiny and weak. Tuesday the 25th morning has clean 1.0ft with a light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s knee-high at best.
The pattern continues through the rest of the period — most mornings are clean or glassy with tiny swells under 2ft, but the afternoons get chopped up by onshore winds. There’s a stretch from Thursday the 27th afternoon through Saturday the 29th morning with almost no swell at all (combined energy of 0). Even when there’s a little bump, the period is always under 8 seconds, so it’s weak and disorganised. The biggest combined energy we see is only 17 on Wednesday the 2nd of September, but that’s a tiny 1.0ft swell with a short 8-second period and onshore wind.
With no standout days and consistent tiny, weak swell, it’s just one of those flat runs that happens in this area. If you’re desperate, the cleanest windows are early mornings like Sunday the 23rd or Monday the 24th, but don’t expect a wave worth paddling for. Given the poor surf quality and strong winds on many afternoons, the setup here might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Stay patient — forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this flat for long.
