The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch is a tough one for Aiguaoliva. We’ve got a long, drawn-out dry spell ahead with barely a whisper of proper surf. It’s going to feel like a desert out there for the better part of two weeks, but there is one flicker of light right at the very end if you’re patient. Hang in there.
We start off on Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd of August with barely a bump – we’re looking at waves around 0.7 ft to 3 ft, but it’s all junk. The winds are messy, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy is pathetic (combined swell energy is only around 1 to 77). You can forget about a paddle, honestly. This pattern of flat and poor continues right through until the end of August and into the first days of September. There are some glassy mornings early on Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, but the waves are only 1 ft – just not enough to push you around. The swell is coming from the ESE with short periods of 4 to 6 seconds, so it’s weak and windswell at best. You’d be better off swimming.
We hit a dead zone from Tuesday the 24th of August all the way through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, with combined energy often dropping below 12 and swell heights staying under 2 ft. It’s a proper flat spell. Aiguaoliva is a reef break that rarely breaks anyway, and this confirms it – there’s nothing doing for paddle surfing. Even the few clean, glassy mornings (like the 24th, 27th, and 29th of August) are total duds because the ocean is just not producing.
Now, the one standout and the only window worth talking about is on Friday the 4th of September. Early that morning, we finally see a pulse of energy roll in. Swell height hits 4 ft from the east, with a period of 6 seconds. That’s short-period, but combined swell energy reads 132 – moderate energy, and a real step up from the weeks of nothing. The wind early that morning is glassy, dead calm, and it’s going to be absolutely clean. Water temperature is sitting around 85°F, and the anomaly is 6°F, meaning it is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual and means you’ll be surfing in bathwater.
The downside is that Aiguaoliva rarely breaks, so this is a gamble. The swell direction is from the east, and the optimum direction for this break is ENE, so it’s not a perfect match, but with 4 ft and glassy conditions, it’s the best we’ve got by a country mile. However, that afternoon the wind swings to the SSE at 9 mph cross-onshore and turns it messy. So your window is the morning only. The swell is under 5 ft, so it’s not too big for beginners, and the 6-second period means it’ll be a bit bumpy and close together, but it’s rideable. There are no crowd concerns listed for Aiguaoliva – it’s rarely breaking, so you’ll likely have it to yourself.
After that bright spot, it drops off again into Saturday the 5th of September with the swell fading quickly back down to 2 ft. So, there you have it – one morning of hope on the 4th of September after a long, flat run that stretches from the 21st of August right through to the 3rd of September. Forecasts can always change, but for now, mark that Friday morning in your calendar and cross your fingers.
Rusty.
