The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Aiguaoliva over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a grim run. This spot is a beginner-friendly reef that rarely breaks, and over this whole 16-day window, the surf is just not cooperating. There’s no real swell to speak of, and the conditions are consistently poor. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat or near-flat days with weak, short-period windswell that barely registers. The combined wave energy is mostly in the single digits or low teens, which is barely a ripple. If you’re a local who knows this place, you know it tends to go through blank spells like this, so it’s not a surprise, but it doesn’t make it any easier to swallow.
The only time the numbers even start to look like something is on Friday, July 31st, when a tiny pulse of swell from the east bumps up to 3ft to 3ft, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy hits 79 (Saturday morning, 1st August), which is still weak, but it’s the best we’ve got. The problem is that afternoon sees a fresh cross-onshore wind at 19 mph, making it lumpy and messy. The morning of the 31st is a little better with a gentle cross-onshore, but still not clean.
The real tease is Sunday, July 26th, when you get glassy conditions in the morning – that’s a major positive for clean waves – but the swell is only 1ft from the SSE with a 4-second period. It’s a flat, oily ocean with nothing to ride.
There’s no standout session here. The best you could hope for is a tiny, weak wave on the 31st or the 1st of August, but it’s not going to be worth the paddle. The water temperature on the 17th of July was 82°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold while you’re sitting there waiting for a wave that never comes.
If you’ve got a kite, this setup might be worth a laugh when the wind picks up, but for a surfboard, leave it at home.
Rusty.
