The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough watch for the next couple of weeks around Aiguaoliva. This spot is a reef break that rarely breaks, and looking at this 16-day window, there’s not a whole lot to get excited about. We’re staring down a long, blank run with pretty much nothing worth paddling out for until the very end.
Starting off, the forecast kicks off with a massive gap. There’s essentially no surf to speak of for the first ten days. The swell energy is flat or pathetically weak, mostly reading between 0 and 14 (like 1 or 2), which is nothing. From Friday, 21 August through to Sunday, 30 August, it’s just tiny dribbles or flat spells. Even when there’s a tiny bump, the conditions are messy with cross-onshore winds or just poor quality. The water temp on the 21st is a whopping 85°F, which is 6°F above normal – very unusual for this time of year, so it’s balmy, but you won’t be surfing.
We finally see a tiny pulse on Monday morning, 31 August. There’s a 3 ft swell from the SSE with a period of 5 seconds and weak energy (46). The wind is light and cross-off from the W, leaving it clean. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – I’d call it micro sups for the desperate, but it’s not going to get the heart racing. That’s the only half-decent moment in the whole outlook, but it’s not a standout by any stretch. The reef is exposed to swell from ENE, and here we’re getting SSE – not the ideal direction at all.
Then it’s back to the doldrums. Tuesday, 1 September through to Saturday, 5 September, we’re looking at tiny 0.3 ft to 2 ft swells, mostly with poor winds or choppy conditions. On Saturday afternoon, 5 September, there’s a 4 ft swell from the E at 7 seconds with moderate energy (113), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy – again, poor surf conditions. That’s the biggest swell of the whole run, but it’s blown out. Aiguaoliva rarely breaks as it is, and with this setup, you’d be better off staying home.
So, honestly, there are no standouts here. No days where everything lines up. The only sliver of hope is Monday morning, 31 August, if you’re desperate for a clean, tiny wave. Otherwise, it’s a long, flat, frustrating stretch. The spot is inconsistent anyway, so a blank run like this is pretty normal for the area.
Stay patient, and keep checking back – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
