The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this 16-day window for Barinatxe - La Salvaje is a tough one. I’m looking at a long stretch of flat, weak, or messy conditions, and it’s a real test of patience. The first surfable day doesn’t show up until Monday, July 20th, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. We’ve got a solid gap of no recommendations from now until that Monday morning.
Monday, July 20th: That’s where the first flicker of hope comes in. The morning session is your best bet. We’re looking at a small bump of swell, about 4ft from the NNE, with a short period of 7 seconds. The wind is dead calm, glassy, so the surface will be clean. The energy is moderate (161), but it’s a weak, short-period swell that’ll struggle to wrap in properly. It’s surfable, but just barely. The afternoon turns onshore and messy, so make your move early.
Tuesday, July 21st to Thursday, July 23rd: The swell drops back down. Heights between 4ft and 3ft, all from the north, with periods of 6 seconds. Wind is a mix of cross and cross-on, chopping it up. It’s poor quality, not worth paddling out for.
Friday, July 24th to Sunday, July 26th: We’re back to ankle-snappers, 1ft to 2ft. The only interesting thing is on Sunday, July 26th, the swell swings to the NW with a long period of 11 seconds, but the height is only 1ft – it’s a tease. The energy is very weak (48), and the wind is cross-on. Not enough to do anything with.
Monday, July 27th to Tuesday, July 28th: A bit more size rolls in, 3ft to 4ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-on, and the period is short. The energy is still low to moderate (58 to 171). The waves will be lumpy and uninviting.
Wednesday, July 29th to Thursday, July 30th: This is the closest we get to a proper swell. On Wednesday morning, we see 5ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy jumps to 238 (moderate). The wind is onshore from the NW, but it’s light. It’s still described as “marginal.” The afternoon sees the swell energy climb to 314, but the wind picks up. Thursday brings 4ft from the NW with a longer 9-second period, but the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy. For an expert break like this, it’s just not clean enough to get excited about.
Friday, July 31st: The swell drops to 3ft from the NW with a 9-second period, but the wind is up to 25 km/h cross-onshore. It’s a blown-out mess.
The standout here? There isn’t a true standout. If I had to pick one, it’s the Monday, July 20th morning session for the glassy surface, but the swell is tiny and weak. For a beach-and-reef setup that’s exposed to the NW, we’re just not getting the combo of size, period, and clean wind. The water temperature feels about normal for this time of year, nothing extreme.
Hang in there, mate. It’s a lean run, but forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
