The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the surf coming up at Barinatxe - La Salvaje.
Right off the bat, the water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 75°. That’s a nice bonus if you’re paddling out without a full suit.
The first few days are a write-off. Sunday the 23rd through to Wednesday the 26th are all poor surf conditions with tiny, weak swell and no decent windows. The energy is pathetic, barely registering above 70 (combined energy of 67 to 21). That’s a long, flat gap to start the outlook.
Thursday morning the 27th shows a little pulse – 4ft from the WNW with a short 8-second period, but the combined energy is still only 224, so it’s marginal at best. The wind is cross-off and clean, but the quality is just not there. Friday the 28th morning brings a massive jump: 10ft from the NW with a 12-second period, and combined energy of 2673 – that’s strong wave energy. But the problem is, this is a beach and reef setup, and that size is too big for all but experts. The wind is cross-off and clean, but the swell is just too much for the break. The afternoon is a complete mess with cross-on shore wind.
The real standout is Saturday the 29th morning. We’ve got 6ft of NW swell, 10-second period, combined energy of 589, and the wind is glassy – that’s as clean as it gets. The forecast says expect very good surf conditions. The swell direction (NW) matches the optimum for this break, and with glassy wind, it’s going to be smooth and fun. The break is consistent, so it won’t be a waiting game. This is the best session in the whole outlook. Crowds are likely here, so get in early.
Sunday the 30th morning is also decent – 5ft from the NW, glassy wind, combined energy of 338, and expect good surf conditions. A solid follow-up session.
After that, things drop off again. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September are surfable but ordinary, with small swell and clean but weak conditions. Then from Wednesday the 2nd through to Thursday the 4th, we’re back to tiny, poor surf with combined energy barely above 60. A real lull.
Saturday the 5th of September morning shows a new pulse: 4ft from the NW, 9-second period, combined energy of 252, with clean cross-off wind. Expect good surf conditions. That’s a promising, long-range option, but it’s less certain this far out.
Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th of September see some bigger swell – 7ft to 8ft, with longer 12-second periods and combined energy over 1000. But the wind is onshore or cross-on, and the surf is marginal or poor. The size is big enough for experts only, and the chop will make it messy.
So, bottom line: if you can get out Saturday morning the 29th of August, do it. That’s the pick of the bunch. Sunday the 30th is a good backup. After that, it’s mostly waiting or hoping for the next pulse around the 5th of September.
Rusty.
