The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be real, the next couple of weeks are a tough watch for Barinatxe - La Salvaje. We’ve got a long dry spell ahead before anything even starts to look interesting, so patience is going to have to be your friend.
The forecast opens up on the morning of July 14th, but don’t get excited – it’s glassy with a tiny 1ft swell from the NNW and the wave energy is weak at 20. The water, however, is a notable 74°, a full 7° warmer than usual for this time of year, so the water temp anomaly is “much warmer than normal”. But with no real swell to speak of, that’s all we’ve got. From July 14th through to the morning of July 21st, we’re stuck in a real lull. There’s just nothing to recommend; the surf is consistently poor, with tiny swells and mixed-up winds. It’s a solid week of flatness and frustration.
Things finally start to flicker on the morning of Tuesday the 21st. We get glassy conditions, a 4ft swell from the NNE, and the wave energy climbs to a moderate 126. The report calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. It’s the first bit of a pulse, but it’s really just a tease. The following days dip back down into the poor column, with small, choppy waves.
Then, hold onto your boards. We’ve got a real standout window showing up later in the month. On the morning of the 27th of July, a solid 5ft swell from the NW kicks in. The period is a nice 11 seconds and the combined wave energy is a strong 662. That’s a serious bump in energy. It’s described as “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions”, and the wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s not perfect, but it’s a real change. This is definitely one for the experts though, as that 5ft height is pushing the limits for beginners in a beach and reef setup.
The highlight of the entire outlook, and this is a long-range call so bear with me, is the morning of Monday the 29th of July. The forecast shows a glassy morning – that’s a huge plus for clean surf. We’re looking at a 5ft groundswell from the NW with a 9-second period. The wave energy is a very strong 383. This sets up as the best bet of the whole 16 days, but it’s a long way off. Keep an eye on this one. The afternoon gets choppy again, so the early session is the one to target. That morning glass on a proper swell is what we’re waiting for. This is an expert-level wave at that size, so don't take it lightly.
So, in short: a big patch of nothing for the first week, a bit of life on the 21st that doesn’t quite deliver, and then a very promising but distant window around the morning of the 29th of July. Forecasts can change, so stay hopeful.
Rusty.
