The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you on this one for Barinatxe - La Salvaje. The next two weeks are going to test your patience. For the first week and a half, it’s a bit of a bust. We’ve got a long stretch of days with tiny, weak swell and poor wind, so don’t even bother checking the cam until the weekend of the 24th and beyond.
The outlook basically starts on Thursday, July 24th, when the swell finally shows some life. The morning of the 24th brings a 6ft swell from the WNW, with a combined energy of 299 (moderate), but it’s crossed-up with a light onshore breeze. It’s a marginal call, and the afternoon isn't any better, with the same swell dropping to 6ft and getting chopped up by a cross-onshore wind. This one is really for the experts only, and even then, it’s work.
Now, the real standouts are on the 25th, 26th, and 27th. Saturday the 25th of July is the pick of the bunch. The morning session is a beauty: a clean 3ft of NW groundswell with a long 12-second period, light cross-offshore wind from the ESE, and a combined energy of 293 (moderate). The conditions will be clean, and that long period means proper waves, though it might be a bit walled-up at a beach break, so pick your peak. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Sunday the 26th looks similar but with a touch more size. The morning is clean again with a 4ft NW swell, a 10-second period, and a light offshore wind from the south. This is consistent, fun-sized surf. Monday the 27th follows the same pattern: clean 4ft NW swell in the morning with offshore winds. These three mornings are the only real windows of quality.
Then, Tuesday the 28th of July. The morning is a serious one. We’re looking at a 5ft NW swell at 10 seconds, with a combined energy of 520 (strong). The wind is a perfect glassy calm from the ENE. That’s a powerful, clean swell. The size is getting up there, so this is for the experienced crew. It’s the best on offer, but it’s a long way out, so don’t book the time off just yet.
The rest of the period after that fades back into smaller, onshore slop. So, in short: don’t hold your breath for the first week. The 25th, 26th, and 27th offer the best wind and shape, with the 28th being the biggest and most powerful, but least certain.
Rusty.
