The Lowdown
Alright, let’s switch to feet and degrees, because that’s how we measure it sometimes.
It’s a rough outlook for Barinatxe - La Salvaje. We’re looking at a long, dry spell for the next week and a half. The waves are tiny, the wind is all wrong, and the energy is pathetic. It’s one of those stretches where you’re better off doing something else.
Friday, July 17th starts us off with a 2ft swell from the NNW, but the cross-on wind from the NW makes it a mess. The combined energy is a weak 16. That’s it. Saturday morning, July 18th, the swell drops to 1.0ft from the NNW, and it’s glassy, but the period is a terrible 4 seconds. The energy is just 7. This continues through the week – little pulses of 3-4ft at best, but always with cross-on or onshore wind. The water temp is about normal for this time of year.
The first real hope comes on Tuesday, July 28th. The morning is the clear standout. The swell is 3ft from the NNW, but the period jumps to 10 seconds, giving it proper groundswell power. The combined energy is 270, which is a solid moderate punch. The wind is glassy from the SE. That’s the cleanest we’ll see it all forecast. For an expert break like La Salvaje, that’s your window. The afternoon gets ruined by cross-on wind.
The 29th and 30th see the swell build to 4ft – 7ft, but the wind stays cross-on or onshore. The 29th morning has a 12-second period and a combined energy of 441, which is a lot of water moving, but the wind makes it sloppy. The 30th afternoon hits 7ft from the NW, but only 7 seconds and onshore – that’s big, bumpy, and only for experts.
Saturday, August 1st morning is glassy again with a 3ft NW swell, but the period is short at 8 seconds, and the energy is just 132. It’s surfable, but not exciting.
So, the one true standout is Tuesday morning, July 28th. That’s your best shot at clean, glassy waves with real power. Everything else is a waiting game. The long gap from now until then is a bummer, but that one morning is worth circling on the calendar.
