The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a real look at the forecast for Barinatxe - La Salvaje.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of pretty poor quality surf, with small, weak waves and onshore winds messing things up. There's a massive gap from now until the very end of July, with nothing worthwhile on offer. The water is sitting at 75° on the first day, which is a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that's very unusual, feels like a bath.
The saving grace, and the only real standout in this whole 16-day window, is the last few days of July and the very start of August. Monday the 27th shows a bit of promise with a glassy morning, a 4ft north-northwest swell at a solid 10-second period. The combined energy is strong, hitting 361, but the afternoon gets chopped up by a cross-onshore breeze.
The true highlight, the one to circle on your calendar, is Thursday the 30th of July and Friday the 31st of July. On the 30th, we get a clean, glassy morning with a 4ft north-northwest swell, 10-second period, and strong energy (317). It’s decent, but the 31st is where it’s at. Friday morning sees a bump in size to 5ft, same clean north-northwest direction, with a very long 10-second period and very strong energy (491). The conditions are glassy. Then Friday afternoon the swell pushes to 6ft (north-northwest, 10 seconds) and the energy jumps to 581, with glassy offshore winds. This is the best on offer – clean, punchy waves for the experts. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s strictly for the experienced crew.
Then into Saturday the 1st of August, the morning stays glassy with a 5ft north-northwest swell at 11 seconds, giving us very strong energy (565), but the afternoon turns onshore. Sunday the 2nd starts glassy with a 4ft swell, but it gets messy by midday.
For the rest of the week, it's a write-off. The wind is all wrong, coming from the north-east and north-north-east, making for a choppy, cross-onshore mess at this exposed beach and reef setup. The swell is tiny and weak, barely breaking. It's a tough stretch, but the end of the month is a real reward. Keep your eyes on that Friday the 31st of July.
Rusty.
