Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for the local lineups. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead for *Barinatxe - La Salvaje* (beach and reef). The first week is a real write-off, with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The water temperature is sitting at 74°F, which is a massive 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual. From now and right through most of July, the swell is tiny and the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, leaving the surface messy. The combined wave energy is weak, often under 100, which tells you there’s just no grunt in the water.
We finally see a glimmer of hope on Saturday the 11th of July in the morning. It’s only a tiny 1 ft swell but it’s coming from the NNW with a nice long period of 12 seconds – that’s groundswell energy. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the east, which should clean it right up. The combined energy ticks over to 103, so it’s got a bit more life. But honestly, it’s still small and the break is inconsistent, so it’s more of a longboard or a quiet paddle than a proper session. After that, we drop back into poor conditions for another long stretch.
The next notable date is Tuesday the 22nd of July in the morning. Glassy conditions from a light east wind, with a knee-high 2 ft NW swell. It’s weak with only 21 combined energy, but if you’re desperate to get wet in clean, small waves, that’s your window. By the afternoon, the wind swings north and picks up, and the swell bumps to 5 ft with 150 combined energy – but it’s cross-onshore and choppy, so it’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. The swell direction is NW, which matches the optimum for the break, but the wind ruins it.
Overall, the 16-day outlook is bleak. There are long gaps with no real recommendations. If you’re a kite surfer, that windy, choppier afternoon on the 22nd might look more appealing than a paddle session. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, the best you’re looking at is a tiny, clean wave on Saturday the 11th morning or Tuesday the 22nd morning.
Rusty.
