The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checkin’ in from the shore. I’ve been staring at this 16-day run for Barinatxe - La Salvaje, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one. This spot is a consistent, expert-level beach and reef, but the forecast is a real mixed bag with a lot of waiting. The water is a balmy 75°, which feels much warmer than we’d expect for this time of year, almost 6° above average – that’s proper tropical bathwater for the Basque coast.
We’re looking at a long, dry spell to kick things off. From Sunday, July 19th right through to the morning of Monday, July 22nd, it’s just poor surf. Tiny, gutless 1 ft to 5 ft waves with short-period, onshore wind junk. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday morning, July 22nd is the first whisper of life. The surf is still only 3 ft from the N, period is a short 6 seconds, so no power, but the wind goes glassy. The combined energy is a weak 80, so it’s more of a float than a ride. It’s surfable, but "very ordinary" is the right call. The afternoon goes back to choppy junk.
The rest of that week and into the next is a washout. Nothing but poor conditions with onshore winds and tiny, weak swell. A couple of glassy mornings on the 23rd and 30th but the swell is too small to do anything with.
Now, if you’re a patient local, there’s one window that sparks a little hope. Wednesday morning, July 30th, things look different. The wind is dead calm, glassy as can be. The swell is 3 ft from the NNW, but here’s the kicker – the period jumps to 11 seconds, giving it some real groundswell push. The combined energy hits 260 (moderate), and the forecast actually says "expect good surf conditions." That’s a rare flag in this whole outlook. For an expert break like this, a clean, long-period swell from the NNW is the sweet spot. The downside is the swell is a bit small, so it’s not going to be a world-class day, but for clean, lined-up waves on the reef, this is the only true standout in the entire 16 days. The morning is the time to be there.
Monday, July 28th brings a bigger pulse of 5 ft to 5 ft from the NNW with a 9-second period, and the energy is strong (331-381). But the wind is onshore (NNW at 9 to 12 mph) and it’s raining. It’s messy, and at that size with a short period on a beach break, it’s going to be a washing machine. This one is for the experts only, and even then, it’s a battle.
The rest of the run into early August trickles out with tiny, westerly slop and cross-shore winds. Nothing to get excited about.
So, the honest truth: Thursday morning, July 30th is the one to circle. It’s the only day where the stars align for clean, quality waves. Get out there early, because the afternoon gets choppy. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for a very short window.
