Table - best surf conditions forecast for Barinatxe - La Salvaje over the next 16 days.
Alright crew, Rusty here. Gotta be honest – the next couple of weeks are gonna test your patience if you’re looking for a wave at Barinatxe - La Salvaje. We’ve got a classic summer flat spell on our hands for most of the run.
Right now and for the foreseeable future, the ocean is basically taking a nap. Starting from Monday 13 July, we’ve got a solid stretch of nothing but poor surf conditions. The swell energy is bottomed out, barely registering (49 to 100 units), with tiny sloppy waves and a persistent cross-onshore wind that’s just chopping everything up. That carries on day after day, through the 14th, 15th, 16th, and beyond. The water is sitting at about 74°, which is more than 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a bathtub, but the waves just aren’t there to enjoy it.
This grim run of flat, onshore slop stretches all the way from Monday 13 July right through to Sunday 26 July. That’s nearly two full weeks of bad surf. Nothing on offer. The breaks are mostly exposed beach and reef, and with the prevailing NW wind blowing straight or cross-onshore, it’d be more interesting for kite surfing than trying to paddle a grovel board.
Now, here’s where I get a little excited. We finally see a glimmer of hope way out in the long-range. On the morning of Monday 27 July, a real pulse of swell shows up. We’re talking a clean 4 ft from the NW with a 10-second period and a serious kick of energy (327 units). But the best part? Glassy conditions. That ENE wind is barely a breath – just 3 mph and glassy. That’s rare and it’ll clean up La Salvaje beautifully. A small, clean, lined-up NW swell on a glassy morning at an expert break... that’s the standout. Get your hopes up, but know it’s a long way off, so don’t plan your life around it yet.
The afternoon of the 27th turns onshore again, so that window is tight. Then Tuesday 28 July brings a solid 6 ft to 6 ft NW swell (combined energy jumping to 800 units – moderate-strong). That’s a proper push. But it’s got cross-onshore wind on it, so it’ll be lumpy and a bit of a battle. At over 5 ft, it’s not beginner territory, and the period is 9-10 seconds – not the kind of groundswell that really wraps the points clean. It’s more of a raw, powerful beach day for experts who don’t mind a bit of chop.
Bottom line: hold tight through a long, flat, onshore run until the very last week of July. The 27th morning is your only real chance of a standout clean session. After that, we get some size but the conditions get tricky again. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
