The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for us, with a slow patch to start before things fire up. We’re looking at a few proper windows of clean surf, so keep your eyes peeled.
This first stretch is pretty quiet. From Thursday morning through the weekend, it’s mostly small and junky. The swell is weak, with energy readings barely getting into triple digits, and the wind is all over the shop. You might see a knee-high wave on Saturday morning with a light offshore breeze, but it’s not worth getting wet for. Blink and you’ll miss it.
Come Monday the 24th, it’s dead flat, basically nothing. A glassy morning but the swell is gone. We’ll be waiting a few days for anything decent. The good news is that the middle of the week sees a pulse arrive. Tuesday the 25th has a little push with 4ft from the NW, but the period is short and the winds are meh. Not a standout, just a tease.
Then, the real energy starts to build. On Thursday the 27th, we finally get some proper surf. The morning looks clean with light cross-offshore winds and a NW swell at 5ft. The energy is up to 274, which is moderate, but the quality is there. The afternoon, however, jumps big to 8ft with 825 energy but it’s onshore and messy – that’s one for the experts only.
Friday the 28th is the first true standout of the window. The morning at Barinatxe - La Salvaje (Basque Country) is the call. We’ve got a solid 7ft of NW swell with a 10-second period, and light southwest cross-offshore winds making it glassy and clean. Energy is strong at 761, and this is a beach and reef setup that loves a NW groundswell. It’s going to be firing. Just remember, over 5ft is getting on the bigger side, so leave the beginners at home. The afternoon gets blown out by a fresh onshore breeze, so get your fill early.
The following Saturday the 29th stays big but messy, with onshores and cross-shore winds making it lumpy. Not the best conditions, but the swell is still there. Sunday the 30th though swings back around. The morning sees a glassy 6ft from the NW, with light easterly winds and clean conditions. This is another top-tier window. The energy is a solid 580. It’s going to be a proper session.
Looking into the second week, the long-range promises are there but less certain. Monday the 31st has a glassy 6ft from the NNW with an 11-second period in the morning – that’s a gorgeous forecast. It’s a world-class morning but a beach break with that long period can be a bit straight, so it might be better on the reef sections. A huge shout-out for that morning session. The rest of the week fades a bit. Thursday the 3rd of September offers a clean 5ft from the NW in the morning again with glassy conditions. A good, solid session. Then the swell drops off into Friday, but the tail end of the window on Friday afternoon shows another push of 7ft from the NW, but with light onshore winds making it messy.
As for the water, it’s a warm one, at 76°F and a solid 5°F warmer than average for this time of year – that’s a lot of extra juice – so the wetsuit is optional at best.
This is a spot that can be crowded, too, so for those standouts, expect some company. The consistent nature of the good swells suggests we won't be waiting long.
So, to sum it up: don’t bother with the weekend or Monday. The two real standouts are Friday morning the 28th and Sunday morning the 30th, with Monday the 31st a solid follow-up. All three offer great size and clean, groomed conditions. Get out there when the wind is right and the tide is kind.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
