The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer at Barinatxe - La Salvaje for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a quiet start. The first few days through the end of August are a bit of a write-off for a decent paddle. Swell is small and weak, with combined energy mostly well under 100 (151 at best early on) and often with a cross or cross-on wind messing things up. You’ll see a lot of “poor surf conditions” in the logs, so don’t get your hopes up. There’s a gap of several days with nothing worth recommending.
The first real standout comes on Friday the 28th, in the morning. This is the one to circle. We’ve got a solid 8ft NW swell (combined energy 1046), with a clean cross-off wind from the SSW. That’s proper power – but this is an expert-only wave at that size. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a decent groundswell but not super long, meaning it should hold shape well at this exposed beach and reef set-up. Water temp is 75°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – 5° above average, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home. Crowds are likely to be heavy here, so get in early.
Another promising window shows up on Saturday the 5th of September, morning session. Swell comes in at 5ft from the NNW with a long 12-second period (combined energy 754). That’s a proper groundswell, and with clean light ESE cross-off winds, it should be offering some very good surf. At this size, it’s more manageable for strong intermediates too. Just be aware that a long-period swell like this can break a bit straight on the beach, but at a reef and beach set-up like La Salvaje, it should still produce some nice lines.
Beyond that, the second week looks less consistent – a few days with 3-4ft NW swell and cleaner winds, but nothing that screams epic. Keep an eye on the forecasts, as things can shift.
Rusty.
