The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on the horizon.
The first week or so is a real struggle, with tiny, weak, and messy waves dominating. The water is sitting at 75°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year, so you'll be surfing in boardies.
The first real chance of anything decent doesn't show up until the morning of the 28th of August. That's a solid gap of over a week of mostly poor, marginal surf. The standout session of the whole 16-day window is the morning of the 31st of August. Now, this one comes with a big caveat – we're looking at a solid 10-foot NW swell with a 10-second period, which is pumping a massive amount of energy (1733). That's a lot of water moving. For beginners, this is a no-go. For the experts out there, this is a serious swell, but the forecast says it might actually be too big for this break. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it won't be a total mess, but it's going to be a heavy, powerful day. The morning of the 2nd of September is another promising session, with 7-foot NW swell, glassy conditions, and a clean forecast. That's a solid morning for the more experienced crew.
For the rest of the period, it's a lot of onshore wind, cross-chop, and small, weak swells. The energy readings are often in the low hundreds, which is very weak. There are a few moments with tiny, clean conditions, like the morning of the 29th of August with 3 feet and glassy wind, but the swell is too small to get excited about. The 28th of August morning is the first real highlight, with 5-foot NW swell, clean offshore wind, and a 10-second period. That's worth a look if you can wait that long.
In short, there's a lot of waiting for very little reward. The 31st of August is the big dog, but it's a beast for experts only, and the 28th of August morning and 2nd of September morning are your best bets for something fun but manageable.
Rusty.
