The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Barinatxe - La Salvaje. We got a classic stretch of beach and reef here, and it’s a spot that knows how to handle a solid northwest groundswell. The water’s sitting at a balmy 75°, which is noticeably warmer than usual for this time of year – you might not even need that full suit.
The next week to ten days are going to be a bit of a waiting game. That first Friday, the 21st, is pretty much a write-off. There’s some size coming through, around 6ft, but it’s lumpy and cross-onshore, with that NW wind making a mess of things. Not worth paddling out for that chop. The weekend stays small. Saturday morning the 22nd shows a drop to 4ft with clean conditions, but the energy is weak. It’s a tease more than anything. We’re looking at a real flat spell from the 24th through the 26th, with waves barely pushing 1ft. That’s a dead few days, just waiting for the ocean to wake up.
Things start to rumble back to life on Thursday the 27th. The swell builds through the day, and by Friday morning, the 28th, we finally get our first real standout. The swell is up around 8ft from the NW with a 9-second period. More importantly, the wind swings offshore from the SW. That’s the kind of combination that makes this place fire. There’s a solid energy in the water too, strong and pushing. This is the one to circle. It’s pushing into that expert-only territory, so leave the foam boards at home. The windows for this are Friday morning and again Sunday morning the 30th, which looks glassy with a clean 5ft. Saturday the 29th has a decent 6ft in the morning with light offshore winds, but it’s not quite as clean as Friday.
After that, we get another small pulse Monday the 31st, but it’s onshore and messy. The next week sees the swell back down to manageable sizes, around 4ft to 5ft, but the winds are a mix of glassy mornings and cross-shore afternoons. Then, looking further out, around Thursday the 3rd of September, the ocean starts to grumble again. The swell builds late in the week, but the wind stays on it, making things choppy. However, that following Saturday morning, the 5th, is a real standout. It’s glassy, with a solid 8ft of NW swell. That’s a powerful, clean session for those who know what they’re doing. It’s a long way out, so treat it as promising, but the setup looks right. In the shorter term, the 28th and the 30th are your best bets.
Rusty, out.
