The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Bit of a tough outlook for the next couple of weeks, to be honest. We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch with hardly any proper surf on the cards. The first recommendation for a wave doesn’t show up until Sunday the 2nd of August, and even then it’s a real struggle.

Let’s start with the overall picture. The combined swell energy is weak for the entire run, with values mostly under 20 (3) and only a brief nudge up to 81 on the 12th of August. The swell heights are tiny, barely pushing 2 ft to 3 ft at best, with short, weak periods around 3 to 5 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell, so the waves will be fat and gutless. The water temp is sitting at 82°, which is about 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a notable warm anomaly, so the water’s feeling more like a bath than the ocean.

The only break we’ve got to work with is Segur de Calafell, a point break that’s inconsistent and rarely breaks. It’s an advanced spot, so not for beginners, and it’s exposed to the SE swell. The optimum swell direction is SE, which is a positive, but the problem is there’s just no size or power.

The first real chance comes on Sunday the 2nd of August. The morning has a glassy, calm wind with 2 ft from the S and a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 15. It’s clean, but the waves are tiny. The afternoon stays clean-ish with a gentle cross-onshore breeze, but the swell drops to 2 ft.

Tuesday the 4th of August morning sees a clean cross-offshore wind (NE 6 mph) with 1 ft from the SSE. The combined energy is 12, still very weak. The afternoon turns onshore and choppy, so not worth it.

The only standout, if you can call it that, is Wednesday the 12th of August. The morning brings 2 ft from the E, period of 4 seconds, with a light cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to 22, which is the best we see. The afternoon pushes up to 3 ft from the E, period 5 seconds, and energy hits 81. Still, that’s weak windswell, and the wind is cross-onshore, so it’ll be choppy and messy. For a point break, this is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if you’ve got the gear.

Overall, the best on offer is the 12th of August, but it’s not good. It’s a long, blank run with no real surf, and for this area, that’s not unusual. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d keep the board in the car and wait for a better window.

Rusty.
