The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – the next sixteen days at Pinarellu are lookin’ pretty flat. This is one of those stretches where you’re better off keepin’ the board in the car and the wax in the cupboard, ‘cause there’s just no proper surf to get excited about. It’s a beach and reef setup that rarely breaks anyway, so a blank run like this isn't out of the ordinary for the area. If any sneaky little pulse shows up, it’ll be tiny and messy, but I wouldn’t be holdin’ my breath.

From Tuesday 18th August right through to Wednesday 2nd September, every single session shows poor surf conditions. The biggest bit of energy we see is on the Saturday afternoon of the 22nd, with a combined swell energy of just 30 – that’s weak stuff – and a paltry 2ft swell from the ESE at a short 5 seconds. Even that little bump is blown out by onshore wind, so it’s not worth paddlin’ out for. The rest of the window barely reaches 1ft, with periods of three to six seconds, and almost no energy to speak of. There is a moment on the morning of Thursday 20th that’s glassy, with WSW wind at 3 mph, and a tiny 0.7ft SSE swell, but that’s a lake, not a wave.

Honestly mate, if you’re itchin’ for a paddle in clean conditions, the best you’ll get is a float on a flat day. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothin’ weird goin’ on there. But for waves? There’s nothin’ on offer. I’d say this stretch is more suited to a swim or a snorkel than a surf. Keep an eye on the charts – it tends not to stay this quiet forever, but for now, the forecast is a total dud.

Rusty.
