The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real here. I’ve had a look at what’s coming up for Tamaris, and honestly, it’s a tough stretch. This is a reef break that’s fairly consistent, but over this 16-day window, there’s barely a ripple worth paddling for. The water temps are sitting at 77°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a solid 4°F above average, so it’s like bathwater out there.
We kick off Friday, August 21st, with a tiny 1ft southwest swell and a short 6-second period, blowing cross-off from the WNW at 16 mph. The combined energy is weak, only 18. It’s clean, but it’s just not enough to do anything with. Saturday and Sunday are even smaller, with swells dropping to 0.7ft and 0.3ft. The energy is gone – down to single digits. There’s a brief moment on Sunday morning with a light NNE offshore at 6 mph, but that 0.7ft, 3-second west swell is all show and no go.
The middle of the week isn’t much better. By Tuesday, August 25th, we get a bit of a bump to 3ft from the southeast, but it’s cross-shore wind and the energy is still pathetic at 30. Thursday, August 27th, sees the biggest swell of the whole period – 5ft from the southeast, period 6 seconds, and combined energy finally hits 146 (moderate). But the wind is howling cross-onshore from the ESE at 25 mph, messy and strong. It’s not surfable, it’s a washing machine. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
From Friday, August 28th, right through to the end of the forecast on September 5th, it’s a flat spell. We’re talking days of 0.3ft, 0.7ft, and often zero swell altogether. The wind is mostly cross-off or clean, but there’s no wave to ride. On Monday, August 31st, the morning goes glassy with a 3 mph easterly wind, but the swell is only 1ft from the southwest. You could float a fishing line, but not a surfboard.
There is no standout window here. Not one. The best on offer is probably that Thursday morning, August 27th, with the 5ft swell, but the wind absolutely trashes it. If you’re desperate, you could maybe find a tiny, clean, inside ripple on the 31st morning, but it’s a long paddle for a whole lot of nothing.
So, plain and simple: the next 16 days are a write-off for Tamaris. It’s a blank run. For an area like this, it’s not totally abnormal, but it’s a bummer. Forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board in the car.
