The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
To be straight with you, the outlook for the next 16 days is a flat spell. There’s nothing rideable in the forecast. From now through to the end of the period, every single reading shows poor surf conditions with zero energy or barely a ripple. The only swell we see is a tiny bump on Sunday the 26th of July, with a 5ft west swell but it’s still marked as poor surf and the combined energy is only 229 – that’s moderate at best, but the quality is just not there. The rest of the time, it’s either flat or ankle-snappers at best.
The first real chance of anything happens on Sunday morning the 26th of July at Tamaris. This is a reef break, beginner-friendly, fairly consistent. The swell comes from the west at 5ft, with a short period of 6 seconds – that’s a weak wind swell, not a groundswell. The combined energy is 229 (moderate), but the wind is a cross-off from the northwest at 16 mph, so it’ll be clean. Still, the file says poor surf conditions, so don’t get your hopes up. The water temperature is 80°F with a massive anomaly of 9°F – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be in a warm bath if you do paddle out.
After that, the rest of the month and into August is a dead zone. By Monday the 27th, the swell drops to 1ft and it’s onshore by the afternoon. Tuesday the 28th is a 0.7ft with glassy conditions in the morning but no energy. Thursday the 30th has a glassy morning with a 1ft – still nothing. The whole second week is a write-off, with strong offshore winds and no swell to speak of.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, Sunday the 26th is your only shot, but I wouldn’t call it a standout. It’s more of a sad paddle. The area is going through a blank run, and it’s pretty normal for this spot to see long gaps like this. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s not looking good.
Rusty.
