The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: this 16-day stretch is looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got one break, Tamaris, and it’s stuck in a rut of tiny, weak, and often messy conditions. There’s a long dry spell ahead, so don’t get your hopes up for anything classic.
The first week is basically a write-off. From Wednesday the 19th through to the 26th, we’re looking at flat dribble—mostly under 1.6ft—with sloppy cross-onshore winds and choppy surfaces. A couple of mornings, like Saturday the 22nd and Monday the 24th, will have clean conditions with light offshore breezes, but the swell’s just not there. The energy is weak, with readings barely getting into double digits (4 to 48). It’s the kind of surf that has you checking your leash more than your wave count.
The only real blip of interest comes on Thursday the 27th. A late-season pulse of west swell bumps the size up to 4.9ft, with combined energy jumping to 129. That’s moderate energy, and it’s the biggest swell of the whole period. The problem? It’s showing up with a risk of thunderstorms and light, confused winds in the morning. The period is only 5 seconds, so it’s going to be soft and crumbly, not the kind of hollow, pushy wave you want. Still, it’s the only time the ocean will have any sort of presence. But with that short period and onshore potential, it’s not a standout—just a last resort.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums from the 28th through to the 3rd of September. You’ll see a few clean mornings with offshore breezes, but the swell stays tiny—mostly 1ft to 1.3ft, with combined energies often under 10. There’s a slight bump on Monday the 31st with 2.6ft and a score of 45, but it’s short-lived and still nothing to write home about.
The one bright spot, and I mean the only one, is Wednesday morning the 2nd of September. We finally get some glassy conditions, a light WNW wind, and a 3.3ft south-east swell with a period of 4 seconds. The combined energy hits 59, which is the second-highest of the whole run. It’s described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”—and honestly, that’s the best we get. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so you won’t need a thicker suit, but you’ll still need to paddle hard for those short-period crumpets.
This is a break that’s fairly consistent, which means it usually doesn’t stay this poor for long. Forecasts can and do change. But for now, if you’re desperate, that Wednesday morning the 2nd is your only real chance at a wave. For the rest, keep the board in the car and the wax in the shade.
