The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. It’s a tough one. Gonna be straight with you – the surf outlook for Varazze over the next 16 days is a real struggle. There’s just no proper swell on the cards. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing to start, with the first real sign of any surfable energy not showing up until Wednesday afternoon on the 9th of September, and even then, it’s barely a whisper.

Let’s talk about Varazze, a reef break that’s fairly consistent when conditions align. The water is sitting at a balmy 81.3°, which is a massive 8.8° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, feels more like a bath than the sea.

The first sniff of a wave comes on Wednesday the 9th. The afternoon sees a tiny 2.6ft swell from the SSW with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 56 (moderate energy), so it’s weak. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE, which is a positive, but the waves are just too small and weak to get excited about. The report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and I’d have to agree. It’s a one-out-of-ten kind of day.

After that, it’s back to the waiting game. The 10th of September has a bit of activity with a 1.3ft SSE swell Thursday morning and a 1ft one in the afternoon, both with a 5-second period. The energy is tiny (12 and 4). The wind is offshore from the NNW, which would normally be a dream, but the swell is just too anemic. Clean conditions, but no waves to surf.

The rest of the 16-day window is a ghost town. We’re talking days of nothing from the 11th through to the 19th of September. There’s a brief moment on the 19th of September, Saturday afternoon, where we see a 0.3ft SE swell with a 6-second period, glassy conditions from a light WNW breeze, and a combined energy of 3. It’s clean, but it’s smaller than a ripple in a puddle.

Honestly, there’s no standout here. The whole period is a write-off. For a break that’s fairly consistent, this is a blank run. The consistent nature of Varazze means it tends not to stay this poor for long, but this forecast is a tough one to swallow. If you’re desperate, wait for the wind to turn offshore on the 10th, but even then, you’re just looking at a clean, flat ocean. The best advice is to just wait for the next system.
