The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, your local surf reporter, checkin’ in from the beach. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Palavas les Flots over the next 16 days is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing, my friend. The first few days are a total write-off, and the pattern doesn’t really change. The best we can say is that it’s a pretty blank run, which is more normal for this area, but it’s still a bummer.

We’ve got a long gap of quiet seas starting now. The first real, tiny glimmer of a wave shows up on the morning of Thursday, 30th July, but it’s a sad little thing. A tiny 1ft SSW swell, with a period of only 4 seconds, so it’s a weak, short-period wind swell with a combined energy of only 6. It’s not enough to get excited about. The morning has a light cross-shore breeze from the NE, which is okay, but the swell is just too small and weak. The afternoon gets worse with a 1ft onshore SE wind. It’s poor surf conditions all the way. The water temperature is 77°F, way warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about the only interesting thing.

The weekend isn’t any better. The morning of Saturday, 1st August, offers a tiny 2ft S swell with a 5-second period and a light WNW offshore wind, so the conditions are clean. The combined energy is a measly 13, though. It’s still a poor surf situation. The rest of the days are just more of the same: tiny, disorganized swells and onshore winds. The morning of Tuesday, 4th August, is clean with a light NW offshore, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft. The morning of Wednesday, 5th August, is the same story – 1.0ft and clean, but tiny.

The second week is more of the same. We see a few mornings with a light offshore or cross-off breeze, but the swell is always under 2ft. The morning of Monday, 10th August, offers a 1ft SSW swell with a clean NW offshore, but it’s still just not enough to paddle for. The best you can say is the conditions are clean, but the ocean is flat. The wind picks up later in the week, with a fresh offshore WNW on Friday, 7th August, but there’s no swell at all.

So, to put it bluntly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. If you’re a kite surfer, the setups with stronger winds and a bit of chop might be interesting, but for a surfer, this is a 16-day window to wax your board and wait for the next forecast. Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, it’s a no-go.

Rusty, out.
