The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up.
Honestly, it’s a rough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. There’s a real long gap with next to nothing on offer. The first hint of any swell that even registers as surfable doesn’t show until Friday the 21st of August, and even then, it’s not going to be anything to write home about.
The spot we’re looking at is La Paillotte, a reef break that’s advanced-level and rarely breaks. The water temp is running a very unusual 84°F, which is a massive 9°F warmer than normal for this time of year—that’s far warmer than usual, so expect tropical-feeling water.
For Friday morning the 21st, we finally see a pulse of swell pushing 3ft from the SSW with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is still weak at 84. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, so the surface will be clean. It’s surfable, but only just. The Friday afternoon gets messy with onshore wind, so the morning is the only window.
After that, it’s back to tiny or flat conditions right through to the end of the period. Saturday the 22nd morning has clean cross-off winds but the swell drops to 1.0ft. There are a few glassy mornings on the 23rd and 30th, but with zero swell energy to work with. The last few days of August and into September see some clean offshore winds, but the swell is absent or barely a ripple. This is a place where a blank run like this is more normal—when it’s off, it’s really off.
If you’re into kiting, the afternoon of the 27th of August has strong cross-onshore winds at 25 mph and a messy sea state, which would be far more interesting for that than for a surfboard.
In short, the only real window is Friday morning the 21st, and even that’s a long shot. The rest of the outlook is a flat spell with good winds but no waves to ride.
Rusty.
