The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a real good look at what’s happening around Ile St Honorat for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. We’re looking at a real flat spell that runs from now, Thursday the 6th of August, all the way through to the morning of Monday the 18th of August. That’s a solid twelve days with nothing worth paddling out for. The energy readings are just zeros for days on end. There’s a tiny blip on the morning of the 7th with a 0.7ft wave from the SSW, but at 4 seconds period, it’s just a bump on the water, not a wave you can ride.
The combined energy stays at zero or in the single digits for the whole first half of the window. Even the conditions are mostly clean, but with no swell to work with, it’s a glassy, flat lake. The water temperature is sitting at 84°F, which is a whopping 10°F warmer than normal – far warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’ll be nice to sit in the water if you’re just having a swim.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the morning of Tuesday the 18th of August. We finally see a pulse of 3ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 4 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 32, which is still pretty weak. The wind is light and cross-off from the NE, so it’ll be clean. But with that short period, it’s going to be a bit fat and weak. Not a standout, just the first chance to get wet in a couple weeks.
The best of a bad bunch, and really the only thing to get even slightly excited about, is the afternoon of Friday the 21st of August. We’ve got a 1ft swell from the SE with a 5-second period, and the combined energy hits 13. The wind is a moderate breeze from the ENE, cross-off, keeping it clean. But honestly, that’s not a real swell. It’s a tiny, short-period lump. Ile St Honorat is a reef break that rarely breaks, and it needs a proper SSE swell to really fire. These weak SW and SE pulses just aren’t what it’s looking for.
This is a reef that’s inconsistent at the best of times, so a blank run like this is pretty normal for the area. The surf is just not on the menu. Keep the board in the car, but don’t bother waxing it up.
Rusty.
