The Lowdown

Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let's cut to the chase: looking at the next 16 days, it's a whole lot of flatness. We've got a long stretch of nothing from now, the 6th of August, all the way through the 17th. That's nearly two weeks of barely a ripple. If you're desperate for a wave, you might want to find something else to do for a while.

The only break on the map is Ile St Honorat (Ile-St-Honorat), a reef that rarely works. The water's a balmy 84°F, which is *far* warmer than usual for this time of year, almost 10°F above the norm. That's not just a little warm, that's a bathtub.

For the first stretch, the wave energy is abysmal. Thursday afternoon the 6th has a weak combined swell energy of 2, with a 0.3ft SW windswell at 7 seconds. There's a cross-on breeze making it messy. No good. Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th are similar – tiny swells, energy in the 2-4 range, and poor conditions. We might get some clean windows with light offshore winds, but there's nothing to ride.

The flatness really sets in from the 9th through the 17th. We're talking zero swell energy, just glassy mornings and some cross-shore ripples in the afternoon. Sometimes it's clean, but it's a pond. If you're into kite surfing, this might look more interesting than for us paddle surfers, especially on those breezy afternoons. For a surfer, it's not worth getting wet.

Finally, there's a tiny pulse of hope. On Tuesday the 19th of August, the afternoon sees the best of a bad bunch. We get a 1ft SE swell with a period of 4 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 6, which is still tiny, but it's something. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, so it might be glassy, but don't expect any power. This remains poor surf.

The next day, Wednesday the 20th, has a similar 1ft swell in the afternoon, but the energy drops back and the wind turns cross-onshore, making it lumpy. The last day we see, Friday the 22nd, the wind is howling at 19 mph from the WSW, and the swell is just a 1ft onshore mess. That's a write-off for surfing, honestly.

So, there you have it. A long, flat, frustrating run. The outlook is grim, but that’s the nature of this spot. It’s inconsistent and rarely breaks, so this kind of blank run isn't unusual. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’m not seeing anything worth paddling out for in the next two and a half weeks.

Keep the boards in the car, just in case, but don’t hold your breath.

Rusty.
