The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, mate, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a desert for decent surf. There are no standout sessions, no proper swell windows to get excited about. We’ve got a long, dry gap from now all the way through most of the period.

The first real, albeit tiny, pulse of energy doesn't show up until Friday afternoon, 7th of August, at Il-Sasso (Sassi Neri Beach). We’re talkin’ a weak 2ft swell from the north, with a short, crumbly 3-second period. The combined energy is a measly (5) – barely a ripple. Wind is a moderate cross-shore from the north at 12 mph, so it’s not going to be clean. Honestly, it’s more of a chop-hop than a surf. It’s a reef break that’s inconsistent, so you’d be lucky to snag one.

The pattern just keeps repeating. We get a few mornings with clean conditions and light offshore winds from the WNW, but with zero swell. It’s a cruel tease. The afternoons are mostly blown out by northerly winds. Saturday the 8th has a similar tiny 2ft north swell in the afternoon, again with a cross wind and weak energy (12). Not worth paddling out for.

We go through another long stretch of flatness until Wednesday the 12th of August. That afternoon we see the biggest swell of the whole forecast: 3ft from the north at 5 seconds. The combined energy climbs to (34) – still weak. But the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NNE at 12 mph, making it messy. The following Thursday morning, 13th August, has a light cross-shore breeze and a 2ft north swell (13 energy) – still not great.

The final week is more of the same. A few 2ft to 3ft pulses from the east show up, but the periods are short (4-6 seconds) and the wind is often onshore or cross-onshore. The morning of Wednesday the 19th of August has a clean 3ft east swell (43 energy) with a light cross-offshore breeze – that’s probably the best of a very bad lot, but it’s still tiny and weak. The afternoon gets blown out by an onshore easterly at 12 mph.

Bottom line: if you’re desperate for a paddle, you might find a knee-high wave on a few afternoons, but don’t expect anything rideable or clean. It’s a blank run for the area, and it looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer with these onshore winds on the small pulses. Keep the board in the car and the wax in the wrapper.

Rusty.
