The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board and listen up. It's Rusty here, and I've got to be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We're looking at a serious dry spell on the surf front. For the first stretch, there is just nothing on offer. It's a heartbreaking run of flatness that'll test your patience.
However, don't throw your wetsuit in the bin just yet. The one spot that has any pulse at all is Il Convento, a reef and point break. It's an inconsistent wave, but it's the only game in town when things get desperate. The water is sitting at a warm 83°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. You'll be surfing in boardies, no doubt.
Right now, starting Thursday the 6th, we're looking at a meager 1 ft of swell with a 2-second period. That’s not surf, that’s just a messy wind chop. The energy reading is a weak 1, and with a moderate cross-onshore wind, it's a total write-off. Forget it.
The next chance, and it's a slim one, comes early on Friday the 7th. There's a hint of a pulse with a 0.3 ft swell, but the period stretches out to 6 seconds, which at least shows some organization. Mornings are your best bet, with a light offshore wind making things clean. But it's tiny, and you're just going to be bobbing around. Not worth paddling out for unless you're desperate.
Then, the ocean just goes into sleep mode. From late on the 7th through to the 14th, there is absolutely nothing. A long, brutal, flat stretch with no waves at all. The good news is that the conditions will be glassy and clean most mornings, but with no swell, it's just a pretty lake. The combined energy reading is a flat 0 for all these days. It's a total desert out there.
We finally see a flicker of life on Saturday the 15th. The afternoon brings a 1 ft swell from the SSW with a 2-second period. It's still weak, but it's something. The morning is glassy, which is the time to be on it, but the swell will be smaller. By the afternoon it gets a little bigger, but the wind turns cross-onshore. Still, in a week of nothing, this might be your best shot. But keep your expectations in the gutter.
A similar story on Sunday the 16th. A 1 ft swell in the afternoon, again with a short 2-second period. It's a bit more size, but the short period means it will be crumbly and lack punch. The light cross-onshore wind will keep it from being perfect.
After that, it's back into the flat wilderness. The following Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st have a sliver of hope, but the swell is barely registering at 0.3 ft to nothing. It's just not happening.
So here's the deal. There are no standouts in this window. The only window with any swell at all is the weekend of the 15th and 16th, but it's nothing to get excited about. For an inconsistent spot like Il Convento, this is a normal dry spell. It's just a matter of waiting for the ocean to wake up again. Stay patient, keep the wax dry, and maybe work on your pop-up in the living room. This is a time for kitesurfing, not surfing.
Keep an eye on those forecasts, they can change.
Rusty.
