The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day outlook for our region is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple to get excited about for most of the forecast period.
The only spot on the menu is Il Convento, a reef and point set-up that’s pretty exposed to the swell. The water is running at a very unusual 84°F right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. But that warmth doesn't mean much when there's no surf.
We’re starting off with a big fat zero. The first week and a half, from Thursday the 3rd of September right through until Wednesday the 16th of September, is almost completely flat. The combined swell energy is sitting at zero (0) for the vast majority of that time. You’ll see a few tiny pulses of 0.3ft to 1.0ft showing up, but with short periods around 2-4 seconds, it’s not going to break properly. The wind does offer some clean, glassy mornings on the 5th, 6th, and 7th, but without any swell, it’s just a flat, pretty lake.
Finally, there’s a tiny glimmer on Thursday the 17th of September. Thursday morning shows a 2ft swell from the SE with a period of 5 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 14. A light NE breeze will make it glassy. The afternoon picks up slightly to 2ft SE, but the wind swings onshore, killing the quality. Friday the 18th has a similar small 1ft swell in the morning with glassy conditions, but it’s still tiny.
Honestly, this is a blank run. For an inconsistent spot like Il Convento, a long stretch of nothing is pretty normal. The waves are just not there. The only thing worth noting is that the 17th and 18th of September offer the best chance of a small wave, but even then it’s for the most patient surfers. For a more experienced crew, if the swell direction was right, the reef could work, but it’s not looking good. This set-up is more interesting for the kite surfers than the paddle crew right now.
