The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Right, straight up, I’m looking at Il Convento and honestly, it’s a pretty bleak picture for the next couple of weeks. There’s no real surf to get excited about. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for any proper waves. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. From now until the end of the forecast, the energy is either flat or just tiny, weak dribbles. There are no standout sessions, no solid swell windows.
Il Convento (reef and point): This spot is usually inconsistent and it’s living up to that name. The water is sitting at a notable 82°, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year.
The only bits of swell we see are tiny. Thursday morning, the 27th of August, there’s a tiny 2 ft from the SE, but it’s a pathetic 4-second period with weak energy (7) and a light cross-shore wind. That’s just not surfable. The following days are more of the same—Friday the 28th has a 2 ft SE swell, still short period (4-5 seconds), and wind is messy. The combined energy barely cracks double digits (13).
Sunday morning, the 30th of August, sees a tiny 1 ft from the SE with a 4-second period (4) and a clean offshore from the NNW. The wave height is just too small. A couple of days later, on Wednesday the 2nd of September, there’s another tiny 1 ft SE swell (8) with clean offshore NW wind. Again, it’s just a ripple.
There is a slight pulse on the 3rd of September, Thursday morning, with a 2 ft SE swell. The period is still short at 5 seconds, but with moderate energy (28) and a clean NNW offshore. Thursday afternoon actually goes glassy with S wind and a 2 ft ESE swell (20). That’s probably the closest we get to something clean, but the size is still tiny for an intermediate spot like this. For a reef and point break, you want more push.
The rest of the period into the second week just fades to flat with zeros across the board. There’s nothing on offer. For a break that’s already inconsistent, this blank run is normal for the area when the swell windows aren’t lining up. It tends not to stay poor forever, but right now, I’d leave the boards at home. Honestly, with the tiny swell and poor surf quality, if you’re desperate for time on the water, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Rusty.
