The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. Honestly, I’m looking at the next 16 days and it’s a pretty flat and quiet stretch around here. The guide says we’ve only got one spot worth mentioning – Il Convento – and even that’s a bit of a tease. It’s an exposed reef and point setup, shielded from the north-west, and it really wants swell from the south-east to light up. Problem is, there’s just not much swell on the cards.
We kick off Monday the 24th of August with a tiny 1ft of swell out of the east-south-east and a period of only 4 seconds – that’s weak, local wind chop, not proper surf. The combined wave energy is pitiful (6). The water temperature is sitting at a toasty 82°, and it’s 4° warmer than average for this time of year, so it’s noticeably warm. The morning is glassy though – that’s a positive if you just want to bob around. But the wave comment tells it straight: poor surf conditions.
Through Tuesday the 25th, the swell bumps up a hair to 2ft from the south-east, period still short at 5 seconds. Energy creeps to 22. The wind goes cross-onshore in the morning, cleaning up a bit to a cross-off in the afternoon, but it’s not enough to make it worthwhile. The waves are just too small and weak.
The rest of the week is a flat-out dud. Wednesday the 26th sees the swell drop to 0.3ft. Thursday the 27th shows a small pulse up to 3–3ft out of the south-south-east, but with a 4–5 second period, that energy (32–58) is still considered weak. And the winds are mostly onshore or cross, so it’s choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out.
Friday the 28th offers another glassy morning with 2ft, but again, the period is short and the energy is a low 27. Poor conditions is the phrase of the week.
We then hit a massive gap. From Saturday the 29th of August all the way through to Monday the 7th of September, the swell pretty much vanishes. Most of those days show zero combined energy, or just a 1 or a 2. There’s morning offshores and some glassy spells, but with no waves to work with, it’s just a pool float session.
The very tail end of the forecast, on Tuesday the 8th of September, shows a tiny 1.0ft of swell coming from the south-west with a 2-second period and combined energy of 1. That’s not surf.
So what’s the call? There are no standout days in this outlook. The best you could do is maybe Monday morning the 24th of August or Friday morning the 28th of August at Il Convento, just for a clean paddle in knee-high glassy lumps. But for proper surf? Forget it. It’s a long, flat run. For an area like this, a blank spell isn’t unusual, but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating. Forecasts can shift, so keep an eye out, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
