The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the coming weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – it's a bit of a tough stretch for the next 16 days. The swell window is just not cooperating, and we're looking at a real dry spell with very little to get excited about. The first real chance of a wave doesn't even show up until the 30th of August, and even then, it's a small one. We're talking about a significant gap of quiet days to start.
Looking at the only spot with any data, Il Convento, it's a reef and point set-up that's exposed to the swell. It's an inconsistent spot, so it's not a huge surprise, but it still stings. The water temperature is a standout though, sitting at a balmy 83°F, which is 5°F above the norm. That's much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won't be cold while you're scratching for nothing.
The combined swell energy is weak to non-existent across the board, rarely getting above a paltry 49 (the highest reading we see is on the 30th). The swell heights are tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the periods are short, so there's no real power to speak of.
Let's run through it. The first tiny, tiny pulse arrives on the morning of the 30th of August with a 3 ft south swell at 6 seconds. The wind is cross-onshore, so it's not going to be pretty. The morning of the 31st of August is glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft from the ESE. There's a brief moment on the morning of the 2nd of September with a clean offshore wind from the NNW, but there's zero swell. The same goes for the morning of the 3rd of September – clean offshore winds but absolutely no waves to ride.
The best of a very bad bunch, if you can call it that, looks like the morning of the 10th of September. We've got a 1 ft swell from the SE with a 4-second period, and the wind is offshore from the NW making for clean conditions. The combined energy is a weak 5. It's not a standout by any stretch, just the least bad option in a very quiet period.
For a break like this that's inconsistent, a blank run like this is more normal for the area. There's just no significant swell energy for the paddle surfer. The wind is often okay, but without the swell to back it up, it's just flat. Remember, this is a reef and point, so with such tiny swell and short periods, it's not going to wrap in or break with any quality.
Unless you're looking to do some long-distance paddling or just enjoy the warm water, there's not much to recommend here. Honestly, for the next two weeks, it might be more interesting for a kite surfer to get some use out of the wind, but for us wave-riders, patience is the name of the game.
Rusty.
