The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what we’ve got on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Il Convento. I gotta level with you straight up: it’s a long, quiet stretch ahead. Good news is there’s water temps running around 84°F – that’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable while you’re sitting out there waiting.

Right now and for the next several days, honestly, there’s nothing doing. The swell window is shut. We’re looking at a run of flat, glassy mornings and light afternoon breezes that just won’t set the reefs up. You’ll see a few days with no surf to speak of all the way into the middle of next week.

We finally see a little pulse arrive on the morning of Sunday, August 17th. The swell bumps up to about 2ft from the SE with a short period of 4 seconds and combined energy of only (20). It’s small, weak, and on the short side, but it pairs with a light offshore NW breeze at 6 mph – that’ll keep the surface clean. It’s not a standout by any stretch, but if you’re jonesing, it’s the first real chance you’ll get to wet a line.

Later that afternoon the wind swings around strong and cross-onshore, so don’t bother.

Tuesday morning the 18th stays clean with that NW offshore again, but the swell drops back to barely a ripple – less than 1ft from the SSE, energy at (2). If you’ve got a longboard and patience, maybe.

From about Wednesday the 19th onward, it pretty much dries up again. A few hints of tiny 1ft to 2ft SE swell pop up over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd, but the periods are short and the winds get messy – cross-onshore moderate breezes. The morning of Sunday the 23rd might offer the only real highlight of the whole run: about 2ft from the SE at 5 seconds (10) combined energy and a light offshore NNW breeze around 6 mph. Clean little closeout set-ups for a log session. It ain’t classic, but in this stretch, it’s the best on offer.

After that, the final days trail off into the same story – tiny, short-period leftovers under clean skies but nothing to get excited about. Honestly, if you’re not on a foamie or a longboard, you might wanna find something else to do this fortnight.

Signing out, Rusty.
