The Lowdown
Righto, grab a coffee and settle in, because I’ve got to be straight with you – this forecast is as flat as a pond. We’re looking at a 16-day window where the only break on offer is Il Convento, a reef and point set-up that’s exposed to the south-east, and it’s just not doing a thing.
Over the entire period, the combined energy of all swells directed here is barely a whisper, with values scraping the single digits or low teens at best – that’s weak, weak energy (20). The water is sitting at 79°, which is a whopping 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s much warmer than usual, so you’ll be sweating in your wettie.
Let’s walk through it. The first 16 days of July offer nothing. The mornings on the 15th and 16th give us a tiny 2ft and 0.3ft – both with periods under 5 seconds – and the wind is glassy or light, but it’s just not enough to push anything. From the 16th afternoon through to the end of the month, the swell is either absent or so small it’s not worth paddling for. Every single entry in the data is marked as “poor surf conditions” with a score of zero. That’s a solid 16-day drought.
The one small glimmer is on the morning of Saturday 25th July. There’s a 2ft swell from the south-east, with a 5-second period, and the wind is calm – glassy conditions. The combined energy creeps up to 16, which is still weak, but it’s the best we get. Then the afternoon sees a 2ft with a 6-second period, but the wind swings cross-onshore and choppy, so it’s messy.
For a true standout, there isn’t one. The best of a bad bunch is the morning of Saturday 25th July at Il Convento (reef and point). That tiny 2ft SE swell with glassy conditions will be clean, but the period is short (5 seconds), so it’s not going to have much push. It’s a beginner-friendly size, but don’t expect any real shape. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might be sharing the water, but with this quality, it’s unlikely to be busy.
The rest of the window is a write-off. If you’re desperate, the 22nd and 24th mornings have a glassy surface but barely a ripple. Honestly, this is one of those times where the forecast just isn’t your friend.
