The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get straight into it. Look, I’ll be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead for the surf around here. We’re looking at Il Convento, a reef and point set-up that really needs something from the southeast to light up. Unfortunately, for the next couple of weeks, that’s just not happening. We’ve got a long, dry spell on our hands, so don’t be in a rush.
Starting from Sunday, the 23rd of August right through the entire 16-day window, the swell is just tiny – we’re talking knee-high at best. The combined wave energy barely gets out of the single digits, maxing out at a weak 65 on Tuesday the 25th afternoon, and that’s with a messy south-southwest cross-onshore. Not worth paddling for. Most mornings are clean enough, especially when the wind goes light offshore or glassy, like on Friday the 28th morning with that glassy feel – but with only 1ft of weak 5-second swell and an energy reading of just 7, it’s flat as a tack. There’s just no grunt behind it.
Water temperature is sitting at 84°F, which is a massive 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so at least you won’t need a wetsuit.
The real kicker is that from Wednesday, the 2nd of September, right through to Sunday the 6th, we’ve got multiple days where the swell is completely flat – zero combined energy, zilch. That’s a proper gap of almost a week with absolutely no surf to recommend. It’s not until Monday the 7th of September that we see a whisper of life, with 0.7ft from the SSE and a light offshore, but again, that’s not going to get anyone excited.
So what’s the best on offer? Honestly, there isn’t a standout in this whole window. The best conditions for a surf will be on the morning of Friday the 28th of August. It’s glassy, the wind is a slight air from the WNW, and the water is clean, but the swell is a measly 1ft from the southeast with a period of 5 seconds and combined energy of just 7. It’s barely a ripple. If you’re desperate for a paddle and a tan, that’s your moment, but don’t expect a wave to ride. For anything with a bit of push, we’re out of luck this run.
This area is known for being inconsistent, and this forecast is a prime example of that. It won’t stay poor forever – forecasts can change – but for now, it’s a waiting game.
