The Lowdown
Grab your board, but maybe leave it in the car for a while. The next couple of weeks are looking seriously flat out at Il Convento. We’ve got a lot of tiny, weak swell and not much push behind it. The water’s sitting at 28°, which is a good three-plus degrees warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s properly unusual, so at least you won’t need a wetsuit.
Right now, Tuesday morning, we’ve got a pathetic 0.3ft of south swell with a 5-second period. That’s essentially nothing, just a ripple on the surface. Combined energy is a weak 2. The wind is light offshore from the NNW though, so it’s clean, just flat. Afternoon goes a bit cross-onshore from the south at 15 km/h, killing any hope you had.
Wednesday morning brings a little more of the same, 0.3ft, but with a slightly better 6-second period. Still, combined energy is only 2. Light offshore from the NW again, so it’s glassy but useless. Afternoon blows up a bit more, 20 km/h from the SSW, choppy, and still nothing.
Thursday morning is glassy with a cross-offshore breeze from the north, but there’s no swell at all – zero. Friday morning we finally see a tiny pulse, 1ft from the southeast with a 4-second period. Combined energy is a weak 3. It’s clean early with a light offshore, but the period is way too short, less than 8 seconds, so it’ll be breaking soft and crumbly. Friday afternoon is the first hint of something, pushing 1ft, but it’s onshore and still junky.
Now, Saturday the 19th is the only real blip in this entire stretch. Morning sees 2ft from the southeast with a 6-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 15. Light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, so it should be semi-clean. Afternoon bumps up to 2ft, combined energy hits 29, but it’s onshore from the SSE, making it a bit messy. That’s your best window for the first week, and honestly, it’s still small and weak.
After that, it fades again. Sunday the 20th drops back to 1ft, Monday the 21st is 1ft in the morning, nothing special. Then we get a couple of glassy mornings on the 22nd and the 26th, but there’s barely any swell to glass off. The 22nd morning sees 2ft from the northeast with a weak 4-second period and a combined energy of 33 – it’ll look clean but won’t have any power. The 28th is similar, 1ft, glassy early, but again, no push.
The long-range stuff – week two from the 23rd onward – is a write-off. The 29th has a slight bump to 3ft from the southeast, combined energy 28, but the period is a weak 5 seconds and it’s cross-onshore. It’s just not worth paddling out for.
Here’s the thing: Il Convento is a reef and point, and it needs a solid southeast groundswell to really light up. All we’ve got is short-period windswell, under 8 seconds, coming from the southeast but without any size or power. The consistent theme is “poor surf conditions” – I’m not going to sugarcoat it. If you’re a beginner, you’re safe; nothing here is over 5ft. But if you’re looking for a real wave, you’re better off waiting.
There’s no standout period in this whole 16-day window. The best you can scrape together is Saturday the 19th, and that’s still marginal. The 22nd morning looks clean with the glass, but that’s it. The rest is flat or junk. With this little energy, and the fact that Il Convento is inconsistent at the best of times, this is a pretty normal dry spell for the area. Forecasts can always change, but right now, I’d be finding something else to do.
Stay patient, Rusty.
