The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the next sixteen days are looking pretty tough for a paddle at Il Convento. This is a reef and point set-up that needs a specific SE swell to really work, and we just aren't seeing that lining up in any meaningful way.
The water is sitting at 79°, which is much warmer than you'd normally expect for this time of year. That's a weird anomaly, but it won't help the waves.
The first entry is for Tuesday the 14th of July, and it's a flat start. Honestly, the entire first week is a write-off. We're looking at a long gap of more than a week where the best you'll see is a tiny 2ft SE swell on the 14th with an onshore wind – that's pretty much useless. The wind does swing offshore or glassy on a few mornings, like the 15th, the 17th, and the 19th, but there's simply no swell to work with. The combined energy barely registers, with values hanging around 1 to 16 (weak energy), so it's just not worth suiting up.
The only real flicker of something happens right at the end of the forecast. On Friday the 24th of July, the morning is showing a 3ft SSE swell with a period of 5 seconds and glassy conditions. That's tiny, weak, short-period stuff, but it's the cleanest we'll see it. The energy is still only 49, so it's very weak. The next morning, Saturday the 25th, has a 2ft SE swell with a light offshore wind, which is the best combo of the whole outlook. The swell direction is finally lining up, and the wind is clean. But again, we're talking about knee-high waves at best.
That Saturday morning, the 25th, is the standout – but it's a very small standout. The swell is coming from the right direction (SE) and the wind is offshore, meaning the waves will be clean. It's an inconsistent break anyway, so you'll be waiting for the sets, but it's the most likely time to get a couple of fun, clean ones. Just don't expect much power.
For the rest of the second week, the afternoons get chopped up by onshore winds from the south, and the swell stays minimal. The energy climbs to 59 on the 26th, but with a cross-offshore wind and only 3ft of swell, it's still pretty weak and won't offer much shape.
So, bottom line: there's a long, dry spell. The surf is not on. If you're desperate, the morning of the 25th is your best bet for a clean, tiny wave, but it's a gamble. For the most part, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer across the whole period.
Rusty.
