The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up: it’s flat. Proper flat. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing for the next couple of weeks, and don’t get excited about anything until around the 17th, and even that is a marginal call. Let’s get into it, day by day.
From the 4th through the 16th, it’s a total washout. No swell at all. You’re looking at flat, glassy conditions with no energy. There are a couple of clean mornings, like the 5th and 6th with a glassy NW breeze, and some offshore mornings on the 10th and 12th, but it’s all just ankle-biters at best. Water temp on the 4th is 29°, which is a whopping 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – trust me, that’s a big deal and it's gonna feel like a bathtub out there. But with no waves, it doesn't matter much.
The 17th rolls in with a pathetic little pulse of SE windswell. We’re talking 0.6m to 0.9m, with a short, tired 5-second period, and weak energy (25-38 combined). This is just not enough to get Il Convento (Big Island) doing anything. It’s a reef and point setup that needs a proper SE groundswell, and this little bump is just going to dribble and close out. The wind is onshore and lumpy, making it messy. Skip it.
The 18th and 19th are the best of a bad lot, but it’s all relative. On Friday the 18th, there’s a slightly better 6-second ESE swell, still small at 0.5m to 0.8m in the morning. The morning glass-off with a light WNW breeze is your one chance for a clean-ish wave. The energy is at 46, still weak, but at least there’s something. The afternoon turns more cross-off, but there’s a risk of thunderstorms, so keep an eye on the sky.
Saturday the 19th is similar – small SE swell, around 0.4m with a 7-second period. The morning looks clean with a NNW cross-off breeze, but it’s tiny and weak (20 energy). The afternoon gets more cross-onshore and choppy. For a spot that’s “inconsistent” even on a good day, this isn’t a standout. It’s just not the kind of swell that’ll get the reef working.
So, to be honest, there’s no real gem in this entire sixteen-day window. The only time you might get wet and catch a couple of grovelly ones is the morning of Friday the 18th. But it’s a far cry from good surf. It's the kind of stretch where the kitesurfers might have more fun with the onshore wind on Sunday the 13th than we will with the waves. We’ve got a long, flat spell, and the one bit of swell in the second week is weak and short-period. Keep your board in the car, but your expectations in the shed.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
