The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this stretch isn’t offering much for surfers over the next 16 days. The only break on the radar is Il Convento, a reef and point setup that’s inconsistent and rarely breaks. It’s normally an exposed spot, but the swell is just not showing up, and the little energy that does arrive is weak and short-period. The water is sitting at 82°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so if you’re just keen for a swim, it’s lovely, but for surfing? It’s a tough watch.
The forecast starts with a blank run from now until Sunday the 2nd of August – no surf at all. Then, from Monday the 3rd into the early part of the week, we see tiny pulses of swell, but nothing worth paddling out for. Monday morning has a 1 ft swell from the ENE with a period of 3 seconds and a combined energy of (2) – that’s weak, barely a ripple. Winds are light cross-shore, but the waves are too small and gutless. The rest of the week is similar: Tuesday morning brings 2 ft from the SE at 5 seconds, energy of (11), with light cross-onshore winds, but again, it’s poor. Wednesday morning is glassy with 2 ft from the SE, but the period is still short at 5 seconds and energy only (12) – it’s clean but tiny. Thursday morning sees a 0.7 ft ESE swell with 4-second period, energy of (3) – practically flat. Things drop off completely from Friday the 7th through the weekend and into the following week, with days of zero surf and only occasional 0.3 ft bumps. By Saturday the 15th, there’s a tiny 1 ft SSW swell, and Sunday the 16th morning has nothing, but the afternoon turns glassy with a 1 ft south swell – still too small to surf. The pattern runs out on Monday the 17th with no surf.
Honestly, this is a long stretch of quiet. If you’ve got a kite or a foil board, the moderate cross-onshore afternoons later in the period might be more interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a blank. Il Convento rarely breaks, and this forecast proves it. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
