The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Il Convento has to offer over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead. For a reef-and-point break that needs a good SE swell to really light up, we’re looking at a lot of days with barely a ripple. The first few days are basically a write-off, so don’t bother paddling out until at least the 16th.
On Sunday morning the 16th, there’s just a tiny 1ft swell from the SE with a short period. It’s cross-onshore and the wave energy is only 5 – it’s weak. Not worth getting wet for. The afternoon sees a slight bump to 2ft from the same SE direction, and the energy climbs to 14 (still weak), but the wind is still messy and onshore.
The morning of Monday the 17th is where things get a little more interesting. A 3ft SSE swell moves in with a period of 5 seconds, and we finally get some clean conditions with a light N cross-offshore breeze. The energy is up to 34 (still modest). It’s not big, but it’s the first chance for a few grovelly, clean waves. The swell direction is a little off the optimum SE, but for what’s on offer, it’s the pick of a very lean period. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to note.
Tuesday the 18th morning sees the swell size climb to 4ft from the east, but the period is short at 4 seconds and the wind is cross-shore, creating some chop. The energy is 76 (still moderate) but the quality is poor. The afternoon drops back to 3ft.
From the 19th through to the 22nd, it’s mostly tiny, with swell heights under 3ft and very weak energy readings. The morning of the 19th has a glassy 2ft from the SE, which would be fun on a longboard, but it’s inconsistent. The morning of the 20th gives a clean 3ft (44 energy) with a light offshore, and Friday the 21st morning also offers a clean 2ft with a moderate offshore – these are your best bets for a few clean but small waves.
Sunday the 23rd shows a jump in afternoon swell to 4ft from the SE, period 6 seconds, with onshore wind. Energy hits 83 (moderate). It’s a bigger bump, but the wind ruins it.
Monday the 24th morning sees 3ft from the SE, period 7 seconds, but it’s choppy with moderate cross-onshore wind. Energy is 91 (moderate). Better suited for a kite than a paddle.
The last few days of the forecast, 25th to 27th, drop back to tiny 0.3ft slop with clean winds but zero energy. Not worth a second look.
So, if I’m being straight with you, the only real standouts are the Monday morning of the 17th for a clean, small option, and the Thursday morning of the 20th for another clean, tiny window. Neither is firing, but they’re the cleanest of a poor run. Don’t expect any waves over head-high or any real push. This is a flat spell, so keep your board on the rack and wait for a better swell.
Rusty.
