The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the same story in feet and miles.
First up, straight talk: the next 16 days are looking pretty flat for the area. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions with barely a ripple. The swell direction we’d want (SE) is a ghost for most of the run. The only spot on the radar is Il Convento, a reef and point setup that’s inconsistent and can draw a crowd sometimes. But honestly, even it’s not offering much.
The water temperature is sitting at 82°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, almost like bathwater.
Let’s walk through it. From Sunday 19 July through to the end of the month, it’s a bust. We’re looking at 12 days where the combined swell energy is zero or a measly 1 (0–1). There’s nothing breaking. A few mornings have clean, glassy conditions, but with no swell to speak of, it’s just a flat, pretty ocean. The afternoons are mostly a cross-onshore mess with wind around 15–25 km/h, making it choppy and unrideable. The best you’ll see in that stretch is a tiny 1ft to 1ft of short-period slop (2–6 seconds) – not worth paddling out for.
The first real hint of life shows up on Monday 3 August morning. Il Convento might see a tiny 1ft SE swell at 4 seconds, with glassy conditions and a combined energy of just 5. That’s weak, but it’s the cleanest the window gets. The afternoon picks up a little with 2ft from the ESE at 4 seconds, energy up to 10, but the wind swings onshore from the SE at 10 km/h, making it bumpy. It’s still poor surf, though.
If I had to pick a standout – and I’m stretching here – it’s that Monday 3 August morning. Glassy, clean, and the biggest swell of the whole forecast (2ft). But with a period of only 4 seconds and that weak energy, don’t expect much. This is a true “beginners-only” shoulder-high mush if you’re desperate.
So, the bottom line: a 12-day gap with no surf, then a couple of weak, short-period pulses that are barely rideable. It’s a quiet run for the area. Forecasts can change, but for now, keep the board in the bag.
Rusty.
