The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what we've got on the cards.
Right off the bat, this is a flat spell. A long one. We’re looking at a stretch of almost nothing for over a week. The water is sitting at a balmy 82.6°, which is a good 6.7° warmer than usual for this time of year—that’s very unusual, a real tropical bath. But for waves? Zilch.
We’re looking at a solid nine days of clean skies and light breezes through to the 23rd of September, but the swell is basically non-existent. You’ll be staring at a glassy ocean with maybe a tiny 0.3ft ripple if you're lucky, but that’s not surf. It’s a flat calm. There's not a single recommendation in the first week and a half. Expect a lot of downtime.
Then, on the morning of Saturday the 26th of September, there's a little flicker of life. A 2ft swell shows up from the SE, but the wind swings onshore in the arvo and it’s messy. The combined energy is still only a weak 10, so it's barely a blip.
The first real chance of something rideable arrives on the morning of Sunday the 27th. We’ll see a 4ft SSE swell with a modest 6-second period. The wind is cross-off from the NNW, keeping the lineup clean. The energy hits a moderate 93, but the surf quality is still described as poor. It’s small and a bit fat.
Now, the standout window is Monday the 28th. The morning at Il Convento is the pick of the whole outlook. A 3.6ft SE swell lifts the combined energy to a solid moderate 160, and we get offshore winds from the NNW, keeping it clean. It’s very ordinary, surfable, but it’s the best we’ve got. The swell direction matches the optimum SE, and with the reef and point set-up, it should handle that period okay. It’s inconsistent here though, so don’t expect a conveyor belt. Crowds are a possibility, but in a flat spell like this, the few who turn up will be keen.
After that, Tuesday the 29th of September morning offers another small window with a 4ft SE swell and glassy conditions from a light WNW breeze, giving us a moderate 109 energy reading. Surfable, but again, very ordinary.
That’s your lot. A long, painful flat spell, then a couple of mornings that might just save the week for the patient ones.
