The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks at Il Convento are looking pretty flat. It’s one of those times where you might be better off checking the tide charts or doing some maintenance on your board, because we’ve got a long stretch of very little to get excited about.
The outlook is bleak for the entire 16-day window, with no real swell on the horizon. We’re looking at a solid stretch of days with nothing breaking. The first proper sign of any rideable waves doesn't show up until the 21st of August, and even then, it's a tiny 0.3m to 0.6m of weak, short-period swell. This is definitely a period to keep your expectations low.
Here’s the rundown. This Friday and the weekend are dead flat. There’s a tiny bump on Sunday the 16th with a 0.7ft, 3-second swell, but with a cross-on breeze, it’s not worth paddling out for. The early part of next week stays the same – a ripple of 0.3ft to 1ft at best, with the only highlight being a bit of a glassy morning on Wednesday the 19th. It’s clean, but there’s just nothing to ride.
The energy, what there is of it, is weak. We’re looking at combined energy values of just 1 to 2, which is basically nothing. The water is a notable 84°F and that’s a massive 6°F warmer than average for this time of year. That’s a real anomaly, something you don't see every day.
We finally see a bit of a bump on Friday the 21st, with a 2ft south-east swell rolling in, but it's onshore and junky. The best windows look to be around Saturday morning the 22nd, where a 2ft south-east swell and a cross-offshore breeze should keep the surface clean. It’s not big, and with that short 6-second period, you’ll be hunting for the little nuggets. The energy picks up a touch to 20, but that’s still weak.
The following week stays in the same vein. Super small, inconsistent pulses of south-east energy. You’ll see a few cleaner mornings, like Tuesday the 25th with a light offshore and 2ft, but the period is still short. The end of the month on the 29th of August might offer a small, clean option in the morning, but it's nothing more than ankle-biters. The energy levels finally get into the low to mid-20s, but the wave heights just aren't there.
Honestly, this isn't a stretch for surfing. For a spot like Il Convento that needs a decent pulse to get going, the lack of any meaningful swell is a killer. It's not a time for the paddle out; it's a time for patience. The forecasts can change, though, so keep an eye out, but for now, I'd make other plans.
