The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good, hard look at the surf forecast for Il Convento. I’ve got to be straight with you—this one is a real heartbreaker. For the next 16 days, there’s basically nothing worth paddling out for. The ocean is flat, the swell is tiny, and what little energy we do see is just not enough to get excited about. We’re looking at a long stretch of near-zero action, with only a few tiny blips of energy that will barely qualify as surfable.
The first real chance of anything happens on Wednesday morning, July 29th. It’s not much, but it’s the only time we’ve got a little pulse. The swell is a tiny 1.0ft from the SE, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a measly (6). The water’s a warm 81°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus if you’re just floating around. The wind is glassy from the NE at 3 mph, so the surface will be clean. But honestly, “poor surf conditions” is the name of the game here—it’s just too small to ride. This is really only a spot for the most dedicated, and by that I mean someone who doesn’t mind spending a lot of time sitting on a board.
After that, it’s a wasteland. From Thursday, July 30th, all the way through to Tuesday, August 13th, the forecast is a repeating pattern of flatness. We see a few days with tiny 0.3ft to 0.7ft swells, like on Friday morning, August 1st, with a 0.3ft SE swell and glassy wind, but again, the energy is just not there (1). The wind does occasionally turn offshore, like on Sunday morning, August 4th, when it’s a light offshore from the NW at 3 mph, but there’s zero swell to go with it. The ocean is completely flat. We get a few more of these zero-swell days with clean offshore winds through the first and second weeks, but it’s a total tease. For example, on Thursday morning, August 7th, it’s clean with a gentle offshore from the NNW at 9 mph, but no swell at all. This pattern of nothing continues with a long gap of days with no recommendations.
The most we get is on Thursday morning, August 13th, when a tiny 0.7ft swell from the ENE with a 7-second period and a combined energy of (5) shows up. The wind is offshore from the NNW at 9 mph, so it will be clean. But again, it’s just too small to be considered surfable. The whole 16-day window is a bust. For a reef and point break like Il Convento, which is inconsistent at the best of times, a blank run like this is more normal for the area. We just have to wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
