The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this one’s a tough pill to swallow. The entire 16-day window is looking pretty grim. We’re talking about a long, drawn-out stretch of tiny, weak swells and hardly any real energy to get excited about. There’s a big gap of surfable, but still poor, conditions from now until the 4th of September, with nothing that even sniffs at a decent wave. The water temp is a warm 86°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like a bath out there, but that doesn’t make up for the lack of push.
The only spot we’ve got to talk about is Il Convento, a reef and point that’s inconsistent and needs a solid SE swell to work. Thing is, the swell just isn’t showing up. All we get is a dribble of energy, with the combined energy barely cracking 80 (80) all the way through, and most days it’s sitting at single digits. That’s basically flat.
For the first week, from Thursday the 20th right through to the end of August, it’s a total bust. Thursday morning the 20th starts glassy but there’s no swell. Friday the 21st has a tiny 0.3 ft SW swell with a 5-second period, and a moderate offshore wind – clean, but you’d be fighting for a ripple. Saturday morning the 22nd is similar with a 0.3 ft SE swell and light offshore winds, but it’s just not enough.
The pattern continues all the way through to the end of the month. We get a few moments of glassy conditions, like on the morning of the 28th of August, with a 1 ft SE swell, but the energy is pitiful (10). It’s a tease. The 4th of September finally shows a bit of a pulse – a 1 ft NE swell on Friday morning with a 10-second period and a light offshore, giving us a combined energy of 26 (26). Still not worth paddling out for. The afternoon of the 4th sees a 2 ft NE swell with a 10-second period, and the energy bumps up to 80 (80) with glassy conditions. That’s the best on offer, and it’s “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. For a spot that’s inconsistent, this is a normal blank run for the area.
In short, leave the board in the car and save the wax. There’s nothing here worth chasing.
Rusty.
