The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Il Convento over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – it’s looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of nada here. From now right through to the end of the first week of August, there’s just no real surf to speak of. We’re talking about a solid 16-day gap with barely a ripple. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 82°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that won’t help us catch a wave.
For the first ten days or so, it’s a blank canvas – flat, flat, flat. You’ll see a few tiny blips of energy, like a 0.3ft swell from the SW on the morning of the 21st of July, but with a period of just 4 seconds and combined swell energy of only 1 (weak), it’s barely a bump. The wind is often clean or glassy, but that doesn’t matter when there’s nothing to ride. The afternoon of the 24th of July shows a bit of a pulse – a 4ft NE swell with a 7-second period and moderate energy of 173. But it’s accompanied by an onshore wind, so it’ll be messy and poor quality.
Things start to look slightly less empty towards the end of July and into early August. On the morning of the 30th of July, there’s a 3ft SE swell with a 5-second period and energy of 82 (still weak). The wind is a light cross-shore, so it’s not ideal. The 31st of July morning offers a glassy 1ft SE swell, but again, it’s tiny.
The standout, if you can call it that, would have to be the morning of the 30th of July. The 3ft SE swell is the biggest we see, and with a light cross-shore breeze, it’s the least ugly option in a very ugly forecast. It’s a reef and point setup, and the swell direction is from the SE, which matches the optimum direction. But with energy that low and a short period, don’t expect much. This is strictly for the keenest of locals who just need to get wet.
Overall, this is a pretty classic summer flat spell. If you’re a kitesurfer, the afternoon of the 24th of July with that 4ft NE windswell and a solid onshore breeze might be more your speed. For the rest of us, it’s a time for board maintenance and watching the forecast change. It tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
