The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
Honestly, it’s looking pretty grim for the next couple of weeks around here. We’ve got a long stretch of flatness ahead. There’s nearly a week and a half of absolutely nothing worth paddling out for, just a whole lot of clean, empty lineups with no swell to back it up. The ocean’s got its calm face on, but a surfer needs more than a pretty view.
The first real flicker of life doesn’t show up until Saturday afternoon, the 5th of September. Even then, it’s barely a whisper. Il Convento will see a tiny 1ft swell from the SSW, but with a period of just 2 seconds, it’s completely windswell and won't have any push. The combined wave energy is a measly (1). A south-west cross-shore breeze won't help either. Honestly, this is more of a lake ripple than a surf. The water temp is way above normal at 84°F, nearly 6°F warmer than average, which is very unusual for this time of year.
We don’t get any other real swell until the second week. On the 10th of September, Thursday morning, a tiny 0.3ft pulse from the SW shows up, backed by a strong 25 mph offshore wind from the NW. The period is only 4 seconds, and the energy is barely there (1). It’s clean, sure, but with that wind screaming, it’s a paddling nightmare with no wave to catch.
Things stay tiny for days. Then on Sunday morning, the 13th of September, we get another whisper of a wave, a 0.7ft swell from the east with a 4-second period and glassy conditions. Energy is still flat at (2). There’s absolutely no power behind any of this.
By the middle of the week, Wednesday the 16th of September morning, we see the best of a bad lot. Another glassy morning with a 1ft swell from the ENE, still a short 5-second period, but the combined energy finally nudges up to (6). It’s the biggest number we’ll see, but that’s like calling the smallest kid in class the tallest. The morning glass-off will make it look pretty, but you’ll be struggling to stand up on anything.
The Bottom Line: There are no standouts. The entire 16-day window is a bust. For an inconsistent spot like Il Convento, a blank run like this is unfortunately pretty normal. If you absolutely have to get wet, the most promising, and I use that word very loosely, would be the glassy Wednesday morning on the 16th or the glassy Sunday morning on the 13th. Don't expect any actual waves. The clean conditions and offshore winds would actually make this setup more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer right now.
The forecast can always change, but for now, it’s time to wax the car, not the board.
