The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s call it like it is – it’s been a flat spell, and it’s going to stay that way for a long stretch before we see anything worth a paddle.
Right now, through the end of August and into the first week of September, it’s dead. The water is a weird 83°F – that’s more than 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so the ocean feels like a bath, but the surf is zero. Combined swell energy is in the single digits (2 or less). Waves are just ripples. The wind is all over the place but mostly onshore or cross-onshore. Thursday the 4th of September morning is glassy, but there’s still no swell. That pattern holds through the first weekend of September.
Monday the 8th of September sees some offshore NW wind, clean and glassy on Tuesday and Wednesday, but still flat. The swell window is completely shut – combined energy is zero every day.
Then, on Thursday the 10th of September, a little pulse shows up. We’re talking about a 0.5ft swell from the NE with a period of 10 seconds – a little groundswell, but the energy is still low at 45. Wind is light offshore from the NW, so conditions will be clean. For the whole outlook, this is the best we’ve got.
Il Convento is the only spot in the forecast. It’s a reef and point that really needs a SE swell to fire, but we’re getting NE and ENE pulses. It’s inconsistent. Over the second weekend, September 13th and 14th, the swell turns to the SW and drops off again. The combined swell energy stays under 10. Nothing here is going to give you a proper wave.
Your best chance is the afternoon of Thursday the 10th of September at Il Convento. A 0.5ft NE groundswell with a 10-second period, and offshore NW wind. It’s tiny, but for a mellow, clean session on the inside, it’s your window. Crowds are possible, but at this size, you’ll probably have it all to yourself.
After that, Sunday the 13th and 14th of September mornings have a 0.3ft SW swell with light cross-off wind – clean but weak, and the wrong direction for Il Convento. The whole second week is a bust. We’re looking at a gap of about 11 days with no real rideable surf.
For this area, a long blank run like this is normal when conditions lock up. It won’t stay this way forever, but for now, leave the board at home. Keep an eye on it.
