The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let's have a look at the prospects for Il Convento.

Honestly, mate, it's a tough run ahead. This spot is a reef and point set-up that usually needs a decent push of swell from the SE to work, and for the next couple of weeks, that just isn't happening. We're staring down the barrel of a long, quiet period. For the majority of this forecast, you're looking at tiny, weak waves that are barely a ripple, if there's anything at all. The combined swell energy is almost non-existent, often just a 1 or a 3, which is basically flat. There's a real gap from the 22nd of September through the 24th where there’s literally no swell energy recorded at all.

That said, there is one day that stands out as a bit of a wildcard. On Friday the 25th of September, things get a little interesting. The morning shows a new 4ft swell sneaking in from the NE with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 145 (moderate energy), which is a massive jump from the days before. Even though the direction isn't the preferred SE, the offshore breeze is gone, and we get a gentle cross-shore wind, which leaves the surface with just a slight cross-chop. It’s still only a 0/10 score, so don't expect perfection, but it’s the only pulse of size we see.

Then by the afternoon, that same NE swell builds to a solid 7ft with a 9-second period and the energy rockets up to a very powerful 823. That’s a heap of energy for this break. However, the wind turns cross-onshore and gets a bit chunky, making it choppy and messy. At over 8ft, that's expert-only territory, and with the onshore wind, it's going to be a battle. Honestly, that afternoon session looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a bloke on a paddleboard.

Before that, the only other hint of activity is the Sunday the 20th of September, when the morning brings a tiny 3ft swell from the SE with a bit more energy (40), and the wind is clean and cross-offshore. It’s not big, but it might be the cleanest you’ll see it all fortnight.

So, to sum it up: The standout for size, and the only real pulse of swell, is Friday the 25th of September. Talk it up all you want, but the morning is small and the afternoon is a messy, powerful close-out. For the cleanest little waves, have a look at the morning of Sunday the 20th. Otherwise, save your wax.

Rusty.
