The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a flat spell for the most part. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing much, with the first sniff of anything rideable not showing up until Tuesday the 25th. Up until then, it’s just small windswell and onshore chop – not worth getting wet for.
Now, the standout window is that Tuesday the 25th into Wednesday morning the 26th. Tuesday morning we see a bump in size, with the swell jumping to 6 ft from the SW, and the combined energy climbing into the moderate range (205). The wind is onshore though, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy, and at 6 ft it’s pushing past the beginner zone. Tuesday afternoon the swell hits 8 ft from the WSW, with a strong energy reading of 945 – this is for experts only. The period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a short-period windswell, meaning it’s going to be a bit messy on the face. The break here is Banzai (Santa Marinella), a reef setup that’s exposed to the SW. It’s fairly consistent, but crowds are often an issue. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 84°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
Wednesday the 26th morning is your best bet for cleaner waves. The swell backs off to 5 ft from the WSW, with moderate energy (203), and glassy wind conditions from the east. That’ll give you the cleanest lines of the whole period, and the swell is still a solid size for a good session. It’ll be a bit steep for beginners, but should be good fun for the experienced crew.
After that, it drops right back off. There’s a brief chance on Saturday the 29th morning with 3 ft from the WSW and clean conditions, but it’s small and weak (50 energy). Into the first week of September, Tuesday the 2nd has offshore wind from the NNW and clean surf, but again it’s only 3 ft to 2 ft – a poor surf situation.
Overall, there’s no real consistent run of good surf. If you have to pick, the Wednesday morning the 26th looks the most promising for a clean, solid wave. Bigger swells are there on the 25th, but the wind will ruin them. The rest is pretty ordinary.
Rusty.
