The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Santa Agostino.

Straight up, this is a tough run. We’re looking at a 16-day window with barely a pulse. The first sign of any real swell doesn’t show up until Monday the 27th of July, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. For the first four days, from Wednesday the 22nd through Saturday the 25th, it’s virtually flat. You’ll see tiny little knee-high slop on Wednesday afternoon, maybe 1 ft, but it’s coming from the WSW with a horrible 4-second period and a cross-onshore wind. Not worth paddling out for.

Sunday the 26th brings a little more life, with knee-to-waist high swell around 3 ft from the SSE in the morning, but the period is still short at 4 seconds, and the wind is cross-shore. The afternoon sees a slight improvement in period to 6 seconds, but the wind shifts to a cross-onshore. The combined energy is still weak, only 85. It’s still poor.

Then we get to Monday the 27th of July. This is the one real highlight in the whole outlook. The morning session is your best bet. We’ve got a 4 ft swell from the SSW with a 7-second period, which is a bit more period than we’ve seen. The combined energy hits 113, so it’s got some push. The wind is a light offshore from the ENE, and the report says it’s clean. That’s the one window. The water temp is a scorching 83°F, about 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year, which is very unusual. It’s going to be a warm one. The afternoon drops off quick with the wind turning onshore, so don’t sleep in.

After that, from Tuesday the 28th onward, it’s a desert. Glassy mornings, but no swell to speak of. A few tiny 0.6 ft to 1 ft windswells pop up on the 31st of July and the 2nd of August, but with periods of 3 to 4 seconds and cross-onshore winds, they’re junk. The rest of the first week of August is flat.

So, the stand-out is Monday the 27th of July morning. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only thing on the menu. The break is Santa Agostino, fairly exposed to the SE, and it’s a fairly consistent spot, so it’s not a total fluke. The wind will be clean, the water is tropical warm, and you’ll get some waist-high waves. It’s intermediate-friendly at that size. Crowds are often there, so expect company.

For the rest of the run, it’s tough. A blank run like this is more normal for the area when the swell windows don’t line up. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s looking like a lot of flat, glassy mornings with no reward.

Rusty.
