The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, quiet period with barely a ripple. The first bit of surf worth mentioning doesn’t pop up until Sunday afternoon, July 19th, at Viareggio Piazza Mazzini. This is a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly exposed to the swell, but the problem is there’s just not much energy. You’re looking at a weak 4 ft swell from the WSW with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 138 (weak). The wind is onshore from the SW at 9 mph, so it’s not going to be clean. The water is a very unusual 83 °F, which is a massive 8 °F warmer than normal for this time of year. Honestly, this is poor surf, not worth paddling out for.
The next few days are even worse. Monday morning, July 20th, the swell drops to 2 ft and the combined energy falls to 19 (weak). The wind is light cross-off from the E at 6 mph, which is clean, but the waves are just too small and gutless. The rest of the week through to the end of July is a real wasteland – we’re looking at days of flat conditions with nothing but zeros for energy. There’s a tiny blip on Friday morning, July 24th, with a 0.7 ft, 8-second period swell, but the combined energy is only 6 (weak). It’s not going to do anything.
The pattern continues into the first week of August. There’s a bit of hope on Monday morning, July 27th, with a 1.0 ft swell from the WSW and an 8-second period, giving a combined energy of 13 (weak). The wind is light cross-off from the E at 3 mph, so it’ll be clean, but it’s still only ankle-high. Tuesday morning, July 28th, is similar with glassy conditions, but the swell is only 0.7 ft. Saturday morning, August 1st, offers a tiny 0.7 ft swell with light offshore wind from the E at 3 mph, making it clean, but again, hardly worth a mention.
So, the only standout? There isn’t one. The best on offer is the morning of Monday, July 27th, or Tuesday, July 28th, when the wind is light and clean. But with waves barely 1.0 ft, it’s really just a chance to get wet and float around. The whole 16-day window is a flat spell. For an area like this, a blank run is pretty normal when there’s no swell in the forecast. Don’t hold your breath; forecasts can change, but for now, I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
