The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, it’s a pretty flat start for the Viareggio Piazza Mazzini stretch. We’ve got a few days of tiny, weak swell with poor conditions, so don’t even bother paddling out until things start to look a bit more promising. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing to get excited about there.

The first window that might get your attention is Friday morning, the 28th of August. There’s a big pulse of swell coming in, with a 13ft southwest swell, but it’s packing some serious energy (2352). The wind will be light and offshore from the east-northeast, which would make it clean, but honestly, this is way too much for most surfers. The swell is too big for the break here, so unless you’re a seasoned charger, stay on the beach. That afternoon, the wind turns onshore and it’s still massive, so it’s not looking good.

After that, we have a few poor days of onshore winds and messy conditions until we get to Monday morning, the 31st of August. That’s where things start to look up. The morning brings a 6ft southwest swell with a 7-second period, and the wind is light and cross-off from the east, keeping it clean. The wave energy is moderate (336). The swell direction is from the southwest, which is just about right for this spot. Expect some fun, surfable waves. It’s not the best I’ve ever seen, but by far the best option in this stretch.

Then into Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, conditions get even better. The swell drops slightly to 5ft from the southwest, but the wind goes glassy from the east-northeast, and the wave energy is moderate (274). This is a genuine standout. If you’re a beginner, this is perfect for you, not too big, clean, and the wind is dead calm. It’s a great morning to be in the water.

Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September, is also looking good. The swell picks up a bit to 5ft from the west-southwest, with a bit more period (8 seconds), and again, glassy winds from the east-northeast. The energy is moderate (346). This is another solid morning for a paddle.

The best of the whole outlook, though, is Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. The swell is 7ft out of the west-southwest, period is 9 seconds, and the wind is light cross-off from the east. The wave energy is moderate (629). This is the biggest clean swell we’ll see, and the shape should be good for intermediate to advanced surfers. If you can only pick one session, make it this one.

But here’s the catch: the swell is a bit over 8ft, so this is only for experienced surfers. Beginners should give it a miss.

After that, the swell drops off quickly, and by Friday morning, the 4th of September, we’re back to tiny, weak waves.

Overall, the best windows are definitely the mornings from the 1st to the 3rd of September, with the 3rd being the standout. The crowds are sometimes an issue here, so if you want a bit more peace, aim for the earlier days. The forecast is solid for the first week of September, but like always, long-range calls can change, so keep an eye on it.

Rusty.
