The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. This is a rough one for the Santa Marinella area. I’ve scanned the full 16-day window and honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about for a long, long stretch. The only spot with any real potential is Cala della Morte (Santa Marinella), but it’s a tricky one.
The Outlook
Right now, and for the next week and a half, we’re looking at a flat spell. From Tuesday, July 28th right through to the morning of Saturday, August 8th, it’s a ghost town. We’re talking days of flat, glassy water with no swell energy to speak of (combined energy values of 0, 1, 2, and 28). The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The first real sign of life comes on the morning of Saturday, August 8th. We finally see a bump of 3 ft from the WSW, with a short period of 5 seconds. The combined energy hits 58 (moderate), and the wind is light and offshore, keeping things clean. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. That afternoon, the wind swings onshore and kills it.
The next morning, Sunday, August 9th, is actually the best bet in the whole window. The swell pushes up to 3 ft from the WSW, still with a short 6-second period. The combined energy is 80 (moderate), but the real kicker is the wind: glassy, dead calm conditions. It’ll be clean as a whistle. But remember, Cala della Morte is a point break that rarely breaks, so this is a rare opportunity. For a shortboard, it’s fine, but beginners might find it a little full.
After that, it fades out again. Monday, August 10th, is glassy but small, and the wind picks up again in the afternoon.
Then, on Tuesday, August 11th, the swell tries to build again. The morning shows 4 ft from the WSW with a 6-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 208 (moderate). That’s a bigger pulse, but it’s a messy one. The wind is light and cross-onshore, and the short period means it’ll be a bit of a washing machine. This one really needs a clean, offshore wind to shine, but it’s not going to get it. The afternoon stays poor.
Wednesday, August 12th, is a similar story, with 4 ft swell and a 110 combined energy, but again, the wind is cross-onshore, ruining the shape.
The Standout
If you’re desperate for a paddle, the Sunday, August 9th morning session is your only real shot. It’s clean, glassy, and the swell is a waist-high 3 ft. It’s not going to be a world-class wave, but for a spot that rarely breaks, it’s a rare moment of peace. You’ll probably have the lineup to yourself, but keep in mind the crowds are listed as "sometimes," so you might not be totally alone.
Beyond that, honestly, I’d wait for the next system. The flat spells are normal for this area, but this one is a long one. The forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the car for a while.
Rusty.
