The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it.

Honestly, for the next 16 days around Rimini, it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is pretty much a write-off for any decent surf. There’s barely a pulse in the water, and when there is a tiny bump, the conditions just aren't coming together. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with no real standouts at all.

Right now, the only spot on the radar is Devil's Break or Lion's Cage (Rimini). The water temperature is sitting at 84°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, almost like bathwater. But that’s where the good news ends. The combined swell energy is basically zero (0), and the forecast is wall-to-wall "poor surf conditions" for the entire run.

We start on Saturday, 22 August with nothing. Sunday the 23rd sees a tiny, weak 2 ft swell from the ENE, but with a shocking period of just 4 seconds and a cross-onshore wind, it’s just messy, choppy junk. That tiny bump fades out fast, and from Monday the 24th all the way through to Saturday, 6 September, it’s a total blank. Day after day of glassy mornings or clean offshore winds, but with zero swell to ride. It’s heartbreaking, because the wind windows are there, but the ocean’s just not delivering.

The only real blink of life comes on Sunday, 30 August, when a 2 ft swell from the ENE shows up in the afternoon, but it’s pinned under a 12 mph onshore wind, making it a choppy mess best left alone. After that, it’s back to nothing. There’s a tiny 0.7 ft bump on the 31st, but it’s not worth paddling out for.

If you’re a kite surfer, the onshore afternoon winds on the 30th might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, this is a total loss. The swell is too small, too weak, and the energy is basically non-existent. Sometimes the area just goes quiet, and this is one of those times. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, don’t bother waxing the board.

Rusty.
