The Lowdown
Right, grab a seat, let’s have a look at this one. Almanarre’s my local patch, and honestly, looking at the next 16 days, it’s a tough one to call. There’s a whole lot of nothing happening for a good stretch. The first real surf on offer is a pulse of windswell that arrives on Friday the 21st, but it’s a messy one. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the West, but it’s short period, only 6 seconds, and the wind is howling from the West at 25 mph. That’s direct onshore, blowing the whole thing to bits. The combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate (165), but with that wind, it’s just a washing machine. Not a wave worth paddling for.
From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of August, it’s a barren run. The swell drops to barely a ripple, and any tiny bumps are either blown out by strong onshore winds or just non-existent. We’re talking days with zero combined energy. There’s a brief moment on Sunday the 23rd where the wind goes light and offshore from the NE, but the swell is 1ft. You’d be chasing shadows. This is a proper flat spell, no two ways about it.
Then, come Saturday the 29th of August, we see another spike. Swell pops up to 5ft from the WNW, but again, the wind is a brutal 25 mph from the same direction. The combined energy is moderate (126), but the conditions are described as strong cross-onshore and messy. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. That theme continues into Sunday the 30th and right through the first week of September. There’s a hint of cleaner conditions on Monday the 31st with light winds and a little 1ft swell, but it’s barely enough to wet your board.
The best on offer, if you can call it that, is a window that appears on Saturday the 5th of September. The swell drops back to 2ft from the West, but the wind is still onshore from the WNW at 12 mph. The combined energy is weak (16). It’s not great, but it’s the least terrible option in a very long, frustrating forecast. Honestly, for this region, a blank run like this happens. The water temperature is a warm 78°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when there’s nothing to ride. Keep an eye on the long-range, sometimes these forecasts change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
