The Lowdown
Alright, folks, it's Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up, the next couple of weeks at Almanarre are looking pretty bleak for a surf. We've got a long stretch of tiny, weak swells and the wind is gonna be a problem on most days. It's not ideal, but these things happen.
Let's be honest, from right now all the way through to the end of July, the swell energy is just pathetic. Most of the time we're looking at flatness or ankle-biters under 2 ft. The combined swell energy readings are incredibly low, mostly single digits (2 to 18 in the brackets), which is barely a ripple. The wind is swinging around from W to WSW, often blowing onshore or cross-onshore at 16 to 25 mph, creating messy, choppy conditions. Not worth paddling out for.
There's a tiny glimmer of hope on the morning of Monday, July 27th. We've got a 2 ft swell from the west at 6 seconds combined with a gentle offshore ESE breeze. It's not big, but the offshore wind will make it clean. That session rates a combined energy of 41. The afternoon of the same day looks even better – 2 ft from the west at 6 seconds, with a very manageable 9 mph offshore wind from the ESE and a clean lineup (combined energy 54). This is probably the best we'll see. It's a small, clean summer wave.
After that, it drops right back off again. The rest of the forecast is a mix of flat days, tiny swells, and onshore wind. The first few days of August look similarly uninspiring.
While Almanarre (France) has the potential to work on a good SW groundswell, the optimum direction is SW but we're getting almost all W and WSW swells, and the period is too short for anything decent. The water temp on the 18th was 81°, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year.
So, my call? Keep an eye on the morning of Monday, July 27th for a small, clean wave. Otherwise, this stretch is a write-off. This setup looks more promising for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Stay tuned though – it tends not to stay this poor for too long.
Rusty.
