The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what we’ve got cooking.
Alright, I’ll be straight with you – the next two weeks are a tough watch. We’ve got waves, sure, but the quality is just not there for a good paddle session. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for decent surf. There are long gaps with nothing worthwhile, and the few pulses we get are all marred by poor conditions. Don’t get your hopes up.
Let’s start with the best of a bad bunch. On Friday the 21st, we see a jump in the swell. The combined energy hits a moderate 157. Swell is 5 ft from the SW with a period of 6 seconds. That’s short-period windswell, so it’ll be lacklustre and weak. The real killer is the onshore wind and rain, which will just trash it. It’s not worth paddling out for.
The only real standout, and I use that term loosely, is actually a bit of an oddity. On Wednesday morning the 19th, at Almanarre, we get a glassy session. Absolutely no wind, 3 ft of swell from the W with a short period of 5 seconds. The water is a toasty 83°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. The problem? The wave energy is weak, only 50, and the short period means it’ll be soft and gutless. It’s clean, but it’s a longboard or funboard kind of day if you want to catch a few.
For the rest of the window, it’s a grim story. Majority of afternoons are blown out by onshore westerlies, with the winds cranking up to a messy 31 mph by Thursday the 27th. The mornings offer some cleaner windows, particularly from Monday the 31st into early September when we get consistent offshore and cross-offshore winds from the east. However, the swell is tiny, rarely pushing over 3 ft, and the wave energy is usually in the low teens or single digits.
This is just one of those stretches. When the break is this inconsistent and the forecasts are this poor, it’s best to just leave the board in the car. For kite surfers, those strong, clean cross-off winds and moderate onshore days from the 24th to the 28th would be far more interesting than anything we’ve got for a paddle.
Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath. This one’s a wash.
Rusty.
