The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking grim for a paddle. We’ve got very little to get excited about, so don’t be in a rush to wax up. There’s a long, flat gap early on with barely a ripple for several days.
We start off Saturday the 22nd with the wind howling onshore at Almanarre, a messy 3ft to 4ft of weak, short-period slop. The water is sitting at 78°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 4° above average, so the sea is feeling like a bathtub, but you won’t be surfing it. Sunday the 23rd into Monday the 24th is a complete write-off with zero swell and clean but flat conditions. We stay in the doldrums right through until the end of the month. There’s a tiny pulse on Tuesday the 25th with 0.3ft to 0.7ft, but that’s not even worth a mention honestly.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show until the morning of Saturday the 29th, when a 4ft W swell pops up, but it’s met with a strong 19 mph cross-onshore breeze making it lumpy and poor – combined energy is 166 (moderate), but the onshore wind kills it. That afternoon it drops back to nothing.
Then, finally, a small window. On Sunday the 30th afternoon, we get a 4ft W swell (period 6 seconds, short and weak) with glassy conditions – a 3 mph SSW wind, dead calm. The combined energy is 101 (moderate). It’s the only chance in the whole outlook for something you could actually sit on and catch a wave, but it’s still ordinary quality. The break itself is rated for beginners and is inconsistent here, so it’s not likely to fire. Crowds are possible. If you’re desperate, that Sunday arvo glass-off is your best bet, but don’t expect much.
After that, Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September offer tiny 2ft to 3ft with onshore or cross winds, and then it’s back to flat calm, clean, and empty through to Friday the 4th. A little cross-off breeze on Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd with 0.7ft to 1ft swell – not surfable. The last day, Sunday the 6th, sees a 4ft W swell but with 25 mph onshore wind, making it a complete mess and likely only interesting for kite surfing if anything.
To be honest, if you’re not looking at that Sunday afternoon glass-off (30th August), there’s nothing here. The consistent lack of swell and mostly poor wind means we’re in a real dry spell. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
