The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for Almanarre. There’s a long stretch of mostly flat, junk, or just plain unsurfable conditions coming our way, so don’t get your hopes up too early. Let’s start from the beginning.
The forecast kicks off with a bit of a nothing burger. Friday the 21st has some tiny leftover swell in the morning, 1ft from the southwest, but with a thunderstorm risk and a cross-shore wind, it’s a write-off. Then Friday afternoon, a gusty onshore westerly at 25 mph blows up a 4ft windswell, but it’s messy and not worth paddling out for. No good.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are just as flat. The swell barely scrapes 3ft on Saturday, with onshore winds, and Sunday morning gives us a tiny 1ft pulse from the west with a short 4-second period, but at least the wind is light and cross-offshore. Still, there’s no energy to work with – the combined energy is just 7. It’s a clean little dribble, but not surfable.
Then we hit a real dead zone. From Monday the 24th through the end of the month, the swell all but vanishes. The combined energy sits at zero for a couple of days. There’s a brief flicker on Tuesday the 25th afternoon with a light 1ft SW swell and some offshore wind, but it’s barely a ripple. Wednesday the 26th is similar – a 2ft south swell with clean offshore winds, but again, tiny. This pattern of small, clean, but weak waves continues until Friday the 28th, when a stronger onshore westerly swell pushes in, hitting 4ft on Friday morning with a combined energy of 157. But the wind is onshore, and the wave comment says “poor surf conditions.” Not worth it.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th is a write-off with onshore winds and bumpy, weak windswell. The best you can say is that Sunday the 31st morning is glassy with a 1ft swell, but it’s tiny.
Now, if you’re patient, there’s a glimmer of hope. The first week of September shows a slight uptick. On Wednesday the 2nd, we get a clean 3ft west swell in the morning, and by Thursday the 3rd, the swell picks up to 5ft from the west-northwest, with glassy conditions in the morning. The combined energy hits 126 – moderate energy at last. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” which is the best rating we’ve seen. That’s your standout window, but honestly, it’s pretty average. The period is only 6 seconds, so it’s a weak windswell, not a proper groundswell.
After that, Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th are back to onshore winds and junk. Saturday the 5th afternoon drops to flat again.
So here’s the deal: the best surf in this 16-day window is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. It’s the only day with a decent swell (5ft, west-northwest), clean glassy conditions, and moderate energy. But it’s a short-period windswell, so don’t expect much power. Almanarre is a beginner spot anyway, but this swell is too small for any real fun. The water temperature is running much warmer than normal – 80°F, which is over 5°F warmer than average for this time of year. That’s very unusual.
Honestly, this is a tough stretch. If you’re desperate, the Thursday morning glass-off is your only shot, but it’s more of a paddle than a surf. Otherwise, give it a miss.
Rusty.
