The Lowdown
Alright, this is a tough one. I’m looking at the next 16 days for Almanarre, and I gotta be straight with you – there’s nothing in the shop worth paddling out for. The new swell just isn’t showing up, and what little energy we do get is barely enough to tickle the shoreline.
We start off with a bit of a tease. On Tuesday the 14th of July, there’s some ankle-high swell from the south, but it’s weak, with a combined energy of only 27. The wind is cross-offshore, so the surface is clean, but with a 6-second period, the waves are just too short and weak to hold a line. This is flat-out poor surf, and it doesn’t get any better.
Wednesday and Thursday offer practically nothing – swell heights drop to 0.7 ft to 1 ft, with energy readings in the single digits. There’s a glimmer on Friday the 17th morning with a glassy, clean surface and a tiny pulse from the south-southwest, but the swell is so small (1.0 ft, 4-second period, energy of 4) that it’s barely a ripple. The water temp is about average for the time of year, but that’s cold comfort when there’s no wave to ride.
Saturday the 18th afternoon sees a bit of a bump from the west, with a 4 ft, 6-second swell and energy hitting 89, but the onshore wind is howling at 22 mph, making it a messy, choppy mess. That’s more of a kite day than a surfing day. The following week stays dead – multiple days with zero swell energy, just clean offshore winds with nothing to ride. The last week of the month sees a few tiny pulses return, but nothing over 2 ft and periods under 6 seconds. The energy is minimal, and the waves are just poor.
So, the honest truth: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The forecast is a blank run for Almanarre. It’s a fairly consistent spot in general, so this kind of stretch is a bit of a downer, but it happens. Keep an eye on the charts – it tends not to stay this flat for long.
