The Lowdown
Alright mate, let’s be straight with you—this 16-day window at Almarre is a dud. I’m not seeing a single session worth getting wet for. Swell’s tiny, wind’s messy, and the whole place looks like a washing machine. Don’t get your hopes up.
From Wednesday the 19th through the end of the month, it’s flat and crumbly. Wave heights mostly sit between 2ft and 4ft, coming from the west or southwest, with short periods of 4 to 6 seconds. The energy’s weak—mostly under 100, like 92 on the 19th morning, 120 on Friday afternoon, and 130 on Tuesday the 25th afternoon. That’s soft, weak surf, and the wind’s all over the place. Wednesday the 19th has a light WNW breeze at 10 km/h, but it’s onshore, so it’s lumpy. Afternoon’s worse—WSW at 30 km/h, cross-on, chop. Thursday’s cleaner with a light SE cross-off in the morning, but the swell’s only 2ft, so forget it. Friday brings storms and onshore SW winds—miserable.
The weekend’s just as bad. Saturday the 22nd has light cross-onshore winds and a weak 3ft swell—just wind ripples. Sunday the 23rd turns offshore and clean, but the swell drops to 0.3ft—flat, nothing to ride. Monday’s similar—clean but lifeless. Even the slightly better moments, like Tuesday the 25th afternoon’s 4ft W swell with 130 energy, get wrecked by a cross-on breeze and lumpy sea. It’s just not happening.
The first real push comes on Wednesday the 2nd of September—morning swell of 6ft from the west, 6-second period, energy at 229. Finally some size, but the wind’s WNW at 25 km/h, cross-on, messy. Afternoon’s blown out—W at 35 km/h, no data. Then Thursday the 3rd looks bigger—6ft from WNW, 6 seconds, energy at 266—but again, west winds at 30 km/h onshore, so it’s choppy and sloppy. For a beginner break like Almarre, anything over 5ft is already too much, and these aren’t clean waves, they’re just mush.
Water temp on the 19th is 82°, a whopping 8° warmer than normal—that’s seriously warm, so you could go in trunks. But you won’t want to with surf like this.
Honestly, with all this swell but such poor quality, strong winds, and a beach/reef setup, this looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s no standout, no hidden gem—just a long stretch of nothing with a few choppy bumps. If you’re keen, maybe peek at the 2nd and 3rd of September, but don’t count on it. The ocean’s not giving us anything here.
