The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this outlook for the next couple of weeks is a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of small, weak, and often wind-affected surf. The only spot on the radar is Almanarre, and even that's a real struggle. Most days you'll be better off doing something else, with a few fleeting moments that might be worth a paddle if you're really desperate.
The water temp at Almanarre is sitting at a very warm 83°, which is a solid 9° above average for this time of year. That's seriously unusual, so you'll be in boardies or a spring suit for sure.
Right now, for Monday the 17th, it's a write-off. The morning is cross-on with a weak 2ft swell from the west and a period of just 4 seconds – that's essentially wind chop with barely any energy (23). The afternoon gets worse with a full-on 25 mph onshore wind. Forget it.
Tuesday the 18th isn't much better. We get a little more height at 4ft from the west, but the period is still short (6-7 seconds) and the winds are just shifting cross-shore. The combined energy climbs a bit to 131 in the afternoon, which is moderate, but it's lumpy and disorganised.
Now, Wednesday morning the 19th is the closest thing to a highlight in this whole run. The swell drops to 3ft from the west (5 sec period), but the wind goes glassy, dead calm. It's just a small, weak 79 energy morning, but it'll be clean. If you're a beginner or just want to sit on a board and not get blown around, this is your window. The afternoon falls apart again with a 15 mph onshore.
Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st are basically flat or near-flat with tiny, weak swells under 2ft and low energy figures (12-19). The odd glassy moment on Friday afternoon is there, but with a 2ft swell and 5 second period, it's barely a ripple.
The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is a mess. Saturday sees a jump in wind strength with 22-25 mph onshore winds and a bumpy 4ft west swell on Saturday afternoon (114 energy), but it will be blown-out and messy. Sunday offers clean conditions with offshore winds, but the swell is virtually non-existent at 0.7-1.0ft.
The first half of the following week, from Monday the 24th to Thursday the 27th, is a mix of clean but tiny surf (offshore winds, 0.3-1.0ft swells) and stronger onshore winds with more size but poor conditions. Monday morning has a clean offshore breeze, but only 0.3ft of swell – that's a lake.
Finally, we get a bit of a pulse on Saturday the 29th of August. The morning shows some promise with a 3ft west swell, a period of 7 seconds, and a light cross-off breeze from the NNE. The combined energy hits 157, which is solid moderate energy. The winds are clean, and the swell has a bit more push. This is the one to watch, but it's a long way out. The afternoon sees the winds turn cross-on and the quality drops again.
The very end of the run into September is a repeat of the same story: onshore winds, choppy conditions, and small, weak swell. Realistically, kite surfers might get a look-in on the windier days, but for traditional surfing, this is a lean patch. The good news is, Almanarre is a fairly consistent spot, so a blank run like this is unusual, and forecasts can change. Keep an eye on that Saturday the 29th morning.
Rusty.
