The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a 16-day stretch ahead, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this one’s a tough read. There’s a big gap of nothing worthwhile at the start, and the only surfable waves that show up are pretty weak and messy. The only spot with any real hope is Almanarre, and even that’s a struggle.
First up, the water at Almanarre is sitting at a very warm 78°, which is a solid 4° above normal for this time of year—feels like a bath out there, but the waves are the real story, and it ain’t a good one.
From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at a dry spell. There’s next to nothing. Tiny 0.7ft to 1ft windswell with periods of 3 to 7 seconds, and combined energy readings barely hitting double digits—just 4 or 8 on the energy scale. Winds are mostly cross-off or offshore, but with that kind of swell, it’s just clean, flat water. No surf to speak of. You’d be better off floating on a pool toy.
Then we hit Friday the 28th of August. Finally, a pulse. The morning shows a glassy 2ft from the WSW with a 6-second period, and combined energy climbs to 40—still weak, but it’s a start. The wind is glassy, so it’s clean. But by afternoon, the wind swings cross-onshore from the WSW at 12 mph, and it gets choppy. The swell ticks up to 3ft, but the quality drops.
Saturday the 29th is the only real standout in this whole outlook, and it’s a qualified one. Morning brings 4ft from the WNW, period of 5 seconds, combined energy hitting 69. The wind is onshore from the WNW at 22 mph, so it’s lumpy and blown out. Afternoon gets a bit bigger at 4ft from the west, period still 5 seconds, energy up to 94, but the wind is howling onshore at 25 mph. This is a beach break setup, and with that much onshore wind and a short period, it’s gonna be a messy, choppy affair. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell is too weak and short-period to handle that wind.
Sunday the 30th drops back to 3ft with onshore wind again, and then we’re back into a flat spell from the 31st all the way through the 1st of September. Glassy mornings, no swell.
We get another little bump on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Morning shows 4ft from the WNW, period 6 seconds, and combined energy finally breaks into triple digits at 104—moderate energy. But the wind is cross-onshore from the WNW at 19 mph, so it’s lumpy. Afternoon is a write-off with onshore gales.
After that, it’s just tiny, weak leftovers through the 4th, and then another flat spell into the 5th and 6th. The 6th of September shows a little 1ft to 2ft pulse with onshore wind, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
So, the honest truth? There’s one day—Saturday the 29th of August—that offers the most size, but the wind ruins it. If you’re an expert and you’re desperate for a fight, you might find something in the lumpy 4ft, but it’s not clean. The rest is flat or tiny. This is a long dry spell for the area, but with the inconsistent nature of Almanarre, a blank run like this is more normal than not. Keep your eye on the forecasts—things can change.
Rusty, signing off.
