The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Almanarre are pretty grim if you’re looking to get a proper wave. The finder is showing nothing but “poor surf conditions” right through, and the combined energy readings are mostly in the single digits or low tens. That’s weak stuff, barely a ripple. There’s a real dry spell from now until late July, with hardly any swell pushing in. The wind is all over the place too, mostly cross or onshore, which won’t do us any favours.
The first real blip of something surfable shows up on the morning of 28 July (Tuesday), when a modest 4ft swell from the west bumps the combined energy up to 122 – still moderate, but at least it’s something. The wind is offshore from the ENE at 9 mph, so it’ll be clean. That afternoon, the swell nudges up to 5ft from the west, with a period of 7 seconds and combined energy hitting 269. The wind goes light and cross-off from the SSE, so the surf should be clean and rideable. That’s your best bet in the whole run – a couple of windows on the 28th.
The water temperature is sitting at 79°F, which is 8°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so you’ll be shedding the wetsuit for sure.
The rest of the period is a write-off. The week leading up to the 28th is mostly flat or tiny, with poor winds and next to no energy. After the 28th, it drops back down to ankle-to-knee high stuff with weak periods. Almanarre is inconsistent at the best of times, and this stretch is a classic example of a blank run for the area. It’s a beginner-friendly beach break, but there’s nothing here for anyone right now. If the wind and swell don’t line up, it’s not worth paddling out.
Rusty.
