Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. I’ve had a proper look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with ya – it’s a pretty grim stretch for a paddle. The whole 16-day window is basically one long flat spell with barely a ripple to get excited about. We’re talking more than two weeks of almost nothing, so if you’re itching for a surf, I’d be looking at other plans or just hoping the forecasts shift.
Right, let’s break it down. Starting from Saturday the 4th of July, the only spot that’s even got a mention is Almanarre. It’s a beginner-friendly, exposed spot that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and the crowds here are sometimes a thing. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 78°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – about 8°F above average – so that’s a real standout, but unfortunately that’s about the only highlight.
Saturday the 4th morning pulls in a tiny 2ft swell from the west with a short 6-second period, and the combined energy is weak at 30. The wind is a cross-offshore from the northeast at 15 mph, so the surface is clean, but there’s just no power. The afternoon is similar – 3ft from the west, 6-second period, energy at 51 – with a clean offshore wind from the east-southeast at 12 mph, but again, the waves are poor. This whole first week is a write-off. From Sunday the 5th through to Sunday the 12th, we’re looking at swells barely scraping 1ft to 2ft, periods staying short between 4 and 6 seconds, and energy readings all in the single digits or low teens – weak, weak, weak. Winds are mostly light and cross-off or clean, so it’s glassy at times, but you can’t surf on wind alone.
There’s a brief moment on Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th mornings where it goes properly glassy with no wind – but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft or flat, so it’s just a mirror. Then things get ugly from Tuesday the 14th afternoon onward, with strong onshore winds cranking up to 25–31 mph from the west and west-northwest, making it blown out and messy. By Saturday the 18th, we’ve got 31 mph gale-force cross-onshore winds – that’s kite-surfing territory, not paddling.
The final weekend, Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, sees a minor bump: 2ft to 2ft from the south-southwest and south, with periods still short at 5–6 seconds, and energy finally climbing to a still-modest 22–28. But the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s choppy and poor. There’s absolutely nothing that qualifies as a standout here. The only real standout feature is that water temperature anomaly – it’s freakishly warm. But for surf? This is a blank run. It tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, the forecast is what it is.
Rusty.
