The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the surf ahead on this stretch of coast. It’s a tough watch for the next week and a half, so don’t be in a rush to drag your board down. We’ve got a long, flat spell on our hands, but there is a little light at the end of the tunnel.

We're looking at a run of poor surf conditions right through until at least the 17th. The swell just isn't there, and the energy is low. For days on end, we’re seeing waves under 3ft, and a lot of the time it's well under that. There's a bit of life around the 13th and 14th, with some moderate combined energy (114 and 147 respectively), but it’s still small and the wind is messy, mostly cross-onshore, which will chop things up. The 14th afternoon does bump up to 4ft with moderate energy (237), but that cross-onshore breeze will make it lumpy. It’s just not worth the paddle for a wave that’s going to close out or be a mess.

The morning of the 15th looks a touch cleaner with lighter winds, but the swell is still small at 3ft. You’ll be scratching around for any nugget. The 17th brings some very long period energy (14 seconds) with a moderate combined energy of 167, but the wind is on it and it's raining. It sounds cooler than it is. This whole first stretch is a write-off, to be honest.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. The one true standout in this whole 16-day window looks to be the morning of Tuesday, the 18th of August. The forecast is showing a nice little pulse of swell at 4ft from the WNW with a solid period of 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 250, which is the best we’ve seen. But the real kicker is the wind: a light northerly, which is cross-offshore at Les Huttes. That’s the recipe for clean, lined-up waves. This is the day to circle on the calendar. It’s not huge, but it'll be clean and have some push to it. This is the standout.

After that, the 20th morning also has potential. It’s another 4ft from the WNW, but the period has dropped to 7 seconds, which is shorter and less powerful. The wind is a light cross-offshore northerly again, which should keep it clean. It’s a decent secondary option, but that 18th is the one.

So, here’s the bottom line. The water temp is a normal 70°F for this time of year, which is fine. The tide might be doing its own thing, but ignore that.

Don't waste your time this week. The surf just isn't there. But come the 18th, get your arse down to Les-Huttes (Ile d'Oleron - Les Huttes) early. It could be worth it. It’s a long way out, so treat it as promising, not set in stone, but it’s all we’ve got and it looks like a gem.

Rusty, out.
