The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here. Let’s talk about Belle Ile.
The next week or so is a bust. The swell is tiny—barely a ripple—for the first nine days, with the combined energy down in the weak range. The wind is clean, often offshore or cross-offshore, which is a real tease, but with waves at 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft, there’s nothing to ride. That dry spell runs from Sunday, July 19th, right through until Monday, July 27th.
Things start to move on Tuesday, July 28th. The swell comes up to 4 ft from the WNW, with the combined energy jumping into the moderate zone (207). The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s a bit bumpy, but at least there’s something to look at. It’s still a marginal call.
The first real standout is Wednesday, July 29th. The morning is the session to chase. We’ve got a clean 5 ft swell from the WNW, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNE. That’s butter. The combined energy is a solid 281, so there’s some push. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s a windswell, not a groundswell, meaning it’ll be a bit sectiony and crumbly, but for a beginner break, it’s a fun wave. 5 ft is a good size for the learners here.
After that, the wind turns onshore in the afternoons, so mornings are the key. Thursday, July 30th morning has a 4 ft swell from the WNW with a gentle cross-shore, which is a smaller, mellower version of Wednesday. Friday, July 31st morning sees a 5 ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s not as clean, and it’s getting a bit punchy for the beginners.
The real gem of the whole forecast is Monday, August 3rd. The morning delivers a clean 4 ft swell from the west, with a moderate offshore wind from the ENE. The combined energy is 230, and the wind is described as “moderate offshore and clean.” That’s a beautiful morning for a paddle. The west swell direction lines up nicely for this spot, which likes the swell from the SW. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no shocks there.
Bottom line: if you’re itching, the mornings of Wednesday, July 29th, and Monday, August 3rd, are your best shots. The Wednesday has more size, but the Monday has the better shape and cleaner conditions. The second week has some promise, so keep watching.
Rusty.
