The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, sit down. There’s something to talk about, but you’re gonna have to be patient. This is Belle Ile we’re looking at, and honestly, the next two weeks are a tough watch. We’ve got a massive gap right at the start with no real surf to speak of. From Tuesday the 14th of July right through to the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July, it’s a flat, bumpy, and frustrating run. I’m talking about 15 days of nothing but poor surf conditions – mostly cross-onshore winds, tiny wind chop, and a combined wave energy that barely gets out of the double digits. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there, but that doesn’t help the lack of waves.
The only real standout, the one true light at the end of the tunnel, lands on the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. Belle Ile gets a spark of life. The swell is a small 3 ft, coming from the WNW, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a groundswell, and while it’s not huge, the period is long enough to suggest some shape. The combined energy hits 156, which is moderate and a sign there’s something to push. The kicker? The wind is offshore from the East at only 6 mph. That’s clean, glassy potential. The conditions are described as “clean,” and it’s the only morning in the entire forecast that reads “surfable waves.” It’s a break that’s fairly consistent, but this is a rare moment where the stars almost align. For beginners, 3 ft is fine, but the longer period might make the sets a bit more powerful. It’s your only shot in the whole 16-day window. Paddling out will be a project, but it’s a project worth taking on.
The rest of the period? Forget it. The 24th of July Friday morning brings a bigger 6 ft swell from the WSW, but it’s accompanied by a fresh cross-onshore wind and a period of 7 seconds. That’s a short, choppy mess with a combined energy of 340 – moderate wave energy, but the wind will ruin it. It’s a beach-break setup, and with that wind, it’s honestly looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The same goes for the 25th of July Saturday morning, with a 5 ft swell and light cross-onshore wind, but the period is still only 7 seconds, so it’s lumpy and weak.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch. If you’re desperate, mark your calendar for the morning of the 29th. It’s the only one that’s worth a look. The rest of the time, you’re better off finding a rock pool. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a patience game.
