The Lowdown
Rusty here. I’ve been staring at the charts for Belle Ile, and I’ll be honest with you – it’s a pretty grim outlook for the next couple of weeks. The swell’s tiny, the wind is mostly wrong, and the ratings are a flat zero across the board for the entire 16-day window. The only real nod to anything surfable comes right at the very end, and even that’s a massive “maybe.”
Let’s walk through it. Starting Saturday morning, 18 July, we’ve got a tiny 1.0ft windswell out of the west, with a weak 8-second period. The combined energy is a paltry 16, which is barely a ripple. The water is a notable 72°F, which is 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a really unusual warm anomaly. But the wind is light cross-offshore, so it’s clean. Still, 1.0ft is not surf, it’s a lake. This pattern just repeats. Sunday morning sees a 1.0ft WNW swell, but with a 35 km/h offshore wind, it’s just blown-out fluff. The energy is only 14. The whole first week is a dead zone of 0.7ft to 1.0ft waves, with moderate to strong onshore or cross-offshore winds, and the energy values hanging around 7 to 24. It’s a bust.
We get a slight shift around the 25th of July. A 5ft swell pops up Saturday afternoon with a 5-second period and a 35 km/h onshore wind. The combined energy hits 143, which is a moderate pulse, but the period is so short it’s just a messy, gutless wall of chop. Not for paddling, that’s more kite-surfing territory. Sunday the 26th is similar, 4ft to 4ft with fresh cross-onshore winds, energy 108 to 197. Still poor.
The last week of July and into August is a real tease. The swell is consistently around 3ft to 4ft from the WNW, with periods stretching to 9 or 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps into the 200s and even 380 on Friday 31 July. That’s a lot of energy for a wave that size. But the wind is the killer. It’s either onshore, cross-onshore, or a strong cross-shore. The ocean is going to be lumpy, choppy, and generally uninviting.
The one standout – and I mean *one* – is the morning of 1 August. We have a 3ft WNW swell with a 10-second period, combined energy of 255, and a 30 km/h offshore wind from the east. The guidance says “marginal surf forecast” and gives it a 1/10. For the whole window, that’s the best we’ve got. The offshore wind will clean it up, and the 10-second period is decent. The swell is 3ft, so it’s okay for a beginner but not a problem. For a surfer who is desperate, that Saturday morning is your only chance to get a few clean lines at *Belle Ile*.
The rest of the first week of August fades back into tiny, low-energy, clean but flat conditions. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” but honestly, with this lack of quality, I doubt anyone will be out.
So, look, between the 18th and the 31st of July, there’s nothing. A solid 14-day gap. That Saturday morning, 1 August, is the only glimmer. It’s a long-range call, so take it with a pinch of salt, but the offshore wind and that moderate 3ft swell make it the only thing worth circling on the calendar. The rest is a write-off.
Rusty.
