The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break this down for the imperial crew.
We’re looking at a rough stretch for Belle Ile. Most of the next week and a half is going to be a struggle. There are a couple of moments where you might score, but you’ll need to be patient and pick your window.
For the first few days, it’s flat and blown out. Sunday and Monday we’re looking at tiny 1ft to 1.3ft swells from the west. The wind is howling out of the east and northeast at 25 to 35 mph. The wave energy is weak, and it’s just not worth paddling out. You’ll be fighting the wind more than surfing.
Monday afternoon through Tuesday stays small, with a bump to around 3.3ft on Tuesday morning, but the swell period is a short 6 seconds. That’s windswell, and it’s going to be choppy and unorganized.
Then things get heavy. Thursday the 27th, the swell jumps to nearly 8ft from the SW, with a combined energy reading of 947. That’s some serious juice. But the wind is blowing onshore from the SSW at 22 mph, making it lumpy and messy. Not a clean wave in sight.
Friday the 28th is the big one. We’re looking at a 15ft swell from the WSW, with a combined energy of 5211 – that’s a lot of ocean power. But the wind is a near gale at 31 mph, straight onshore. This is a survival session for experts only. The swell period is 11 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell, but at a beach break it’s likely to close out and be treacherous. Not recommended unless you’re a masochist.
Saturday the 29th drops back to around 6ft, but still with strong onshore winds. The conditions remain poor.
We finally get a break on Sunday the 30th. The swell is a more manageable 5ft, and the wind eases to a light 9 mph cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy is 272. It’s still marginal, but it’s the best we’ve seen in days. The waves will be a bit crumbly with a 7-second period, but you could get a few fun ones if you’re patient.
Monday and Tuesday are back to small and messy. Wednesday the 2nd has a moment with a 2.3ft swell from the WNW and a light 6 mph offshore from the north. The combined energy is 113. It’s described as “surfable but very ordinary.” You could get some clean little waves, but it’s not going to be a standout session.
Looking into the second week, Thursday the 3rd through the 6th stays small, mostly under 3ft, with variable winds. The water temperature is about 67.5°F, which is normal for the season.
Bottom line: if you’re looking for a session, Sunday the 30th is your best bet. It’s not perfect, but it’s the closest we get to clean, manageable waves. The big Friday swell is impressive but ruined by wind. For the hardcore, maybe a kite session is more interesting on those big, windy days. Keep watching the forecasts – things can change.
Stay safe out there.
