The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into what’s heading our way at Belle Ile - Les Donnants. It’s a river mouth setup, exposed to the SW, and it’s usually consistent, so when it’s good, it’s good. But right now, we’ve got a bit of a slow burn ahead of us.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing fancy there.
The first week is pretty flat. We’re looking at a long stretch of weak, tiny swell with not much energy. From Sunday the 19th all the way through to Monday the 27th, the swell is just a measly 0.3ft to 2ft, with the combined energy barely ticking over, mostly in the low double digits (like 7-38). It’s mostly clean, with some cross-off winds, but there’s simply no push. Kite surfers might get a look in with those stronger onshore winds later in the week, but for paddle surfing, it’s a hard no.
Things start to get a little more interesting mid-week. On Tuesday the 28th, the swell bumps up to 4ft from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 207, but the wind is onshore, messing it up. It’s a marginal call.
The first real standout comes on Wednesday the 29th. The morning session is looking best. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the WNW, period of 6 seconds, and a light NNE cross-off breeze. The combined energy is a solid 281. It’s clean, it’s surfable, and for a beginner-friendly spot like this, that’s a good window. The afternoon turns onshore and messy.
The next notable day is Friday the 31st. The morning shows a 5ft WNW swell, period of 9 seconds, and combined energy of 374. That’s a lot of power, but the wind is a light cross-onshore, bringing some small ripples. It’s not perfect, but there’s energy in the water. The afternoon gets blown out by a fresh onshore.
For the absolute best of the whole run, we’re looking at Monday the 3rd of August. The morning has a 4ft swell from the west, period of 9 seconds, and combined energy of 230. The wind is a clean offshore from the ENE, blowing at 16 mph. That’s the one. Clean, offshore conditions at a river mouth that’s exposed to the SW, with a decent size for the spot. This is the session to circle.
So, to wrap it up: a long flat spell, then a couple of decent mornings, but the standout is Monday the 3rd of August. Don’t hold your breath for the first week.
Rusty.
