The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve had a proper look at the charts for the Penthievre region. To be straight with you, it’s not going to be a classic run. The first week is a real write-off—poor conditions and weak energy dominate. The standout action comes in the second week, with a couple of mornings that look like they’ll deliver.
The outlook kicks off on Sunday morning, September 13, with a tiny pulse of 3ft swell from the west, period around 11 seconds. Combined energy is moderate at 189. It’s glassy, with wind from the SSW, so it’s clean enough. But the waves are ordinary and the overall vibe is flat. This fades fast.
Monday September 14 sees the swell drop to 2ft from the west, period slipping to 10 seconds, and energy weakening to 95. The morning is clean with a light east wind, but it’s poor. Tuesday September 15 is even smaller—2ft, period 8 seconds—with onshore winds and energy down to 64. Not worth the wettie.
Wednesday September 16 and Thursday September 17 bring slightly more size (4ft to 5ft) from the west, but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. Combined energy picks up to 371 on Wednesday afternoon and 364 on Thursday, but the quality is poor. Friday September 18 has a long-period swell of 16 seconds at 4ft in the afternoon, energy strong at 859, but the wind is cross-onshore again. The long period is a tease.
After a long stretch of dud days—there’s a gap of nearly a week with no real recommendations—things finally turn around. Sunday morning September 20 is the main standout. You get a 4ft west swell, powered by a very long period of 16 seconds, and a solid offshore wind from the northeast. Combined energy is strong at 806. The conditions are described as “very good,” with moderate offshore breeze keeping it clean. This is a proper session for experienced surfers—the long period will draw up nice lines at this exposed spot, but it might break a bit straight if you’re on a beach break. Still, it’s the pick of the window.
Monday morning September 21 is another solid option, with 4ft western swell at 15 seconds, offshore ENE winds at 20 km/h, and energy at 513. Clean and punchy. The afternoon glass-off with 3ft swell and 14-second period is also worth a paddle, but nowhere near as strong.
After that, it drops back to tiny—1ft and less from September 23 onward—with poor conditions taking over. A classic case of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it surf.
Crowds are sometimes a factor at Penthievre, so get in early on that Sunday.
