The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s happening at Penthievre for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a slow start. From the 16th right on through to the morning of the 28th, there’s barely a ripple. You’re looking at tiny 0.7ft to 2ft slop with very weak energy (5 to 80) and a lot of choppy or cross-on wind. There’s a few clean, glassy moments on the 18th, 19th, and 22nd, but with no swell behind it, you’re just staring at a flat lake. It’s a long, quiet stretch.
Things finally kick into gear on the 28th of July. The afternoon brings a 6ft swell from the SW, but it’s only got a short 7 second period and strong cross-on winds (35 km/h), so it’s gonna be a lumpy, messy closeout. The combined energy is moderate (301), but it’s not really one for the surfboard.
The real highlight is the morning of the 29th of July. Wednesday morning we’ve got a clean 6ft swell from the WSW with a 9 second period, and the wind is a light NNE cross-off. The combined energy is a strong 463, and with glassy, clean conditions, this is your best bet. Solid, fun waves for anyone comfortable on a bigger board. The afternoon gets choppy again as the wind swings cross-on.
Thursday the 30th still has some decent leftover energy – 4ft from the west in the morning with a light NNE offshore breeze. Energy is still moderate at 241, and it’s clean. Worth a look.
Then on the 31st of July, Friday morning, another pulse of 5ft from the west, 8 second period, with a light NNW cross-off. Combined energy is strong again at 493, and the conditions look clean. That’s your second standout, though it’s a ways out so don’t set your watch by it yet.
Water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
So, it’s a flat first week and a half, then a couple of really promising mornings at the tail end. Focus your energy on the 29th and the 31st.
