The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Look, I gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one for us at Penthievre. The next week and a half is pretty much a write-off, and then we get a tease of something bigger that might not even work out. Let’s walk through it.
The pattern is grim for a long stretch. From Wednesday, the 29th of July, right through to the 6th of August, we’re looking at flat, messy, or just plain poor conditions. There are a solid ten days there where the swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore, and the energy is weak. A few mornings, like the 31st of July and the 1st of August, offer a bit of clean cross-off wind, but the surf is so small – 1ft to 2ft – you’d be fighting for a knee-high dribble. The combined energy is barely registering (26 and 84, respectively). It’s just not worth paddling out for.
Now, here’s the one moment that gets the heart rate up. Friday morning, the 7th of August. The forecast shows a spike in swell to 6ft from the WSW, and the combined energy jumps to 792 (moderate to strong). That’s the real deal. The wind is glassy, dead calm from the east – that’s an absolute gift. The water temp is about normal for this time of year at 67°F. If you are an expert surfer, this is the one to circle. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s not for beginners, and with that size and a period of 8 seconds, it’ll be a bit walled up, but clean glassy conditions on a 6ft wave are worth the wait. On Friday afternoon, the wind swings onshore and the quality drops instantly, so it’s a morning-only window.
After that, the swell drops back to 4ft on Saturday the 8th, but the wind is clean in the morning, though the energy is lower (286). The rest of the fortnight fades into more small, poor surf with onshore winds.
So, the standout is painfully brief: Friday morning, the 7th of August, at Penthievre. That’s your best shot. The glassy conditions and that solid 6ft WSW swell are the only real highlight. It’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it, but it’s the one window that looks like it could actually deliver.
