The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are shaping up like for Lesconil.
Straight up, the first week and a half is a bit of a tough watch. We’re looking at tiny, weak waves with hardly any energy behind them. The combined swell energy is barely getting into double figures, hovering around 22 to 60 (moderate-to-low), which is basically a flat spell for a surf spot. The water is sitting at 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, like a summer bath. But that’s about the only good news. The swell is all under 1ft, mostly from the west, with a short period between 5 and 8 seconds. It’s just not doing anything, and the forecast is calling it “poor surf conditions” across the board. There’s a solid gap from the 16th all the way through to the 25th of July with no real recommendations worth paddling for.
Things start to get a little more interesting on Saturday the 26th. The swell picks up to 2ft, still small but the wave energy starts climbing to 98 (moderate) and the wind is looking clean. Sunday the 26th afternoon sees a moderate offshore breeze from the WNW, and the surf is described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not a standout, but it’s a sign of life.
The real standout, and the one I’m talking about for the end of the month, is the morning of Wednesday the 30th of July. The swell jumps to a solid 6ft from the WNW, with a long period of 12 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy rockets up to 934, which is strong energy. Wind is light offshore from the NW, so it’s going to be clean and glassy. This is the best on offer for the whole run. The direction is just about perfect for Lesconil’s optimum from the WSW, and the long period means it’ll wrap in nicely to the beach and reef setup. For a beginner spot, 6ft is on the upper end, so it’s more for the intermediates and up. The Thursday morning of the 31st also looks good, with 6ft from the WNW and an 11-second period, plus clean conditions, but the Wednesday morning is the pick.
There’s no other break in the data, so it’s all about Lesconil. It’s a very consistent spot, but it has been dead quiet. The long-range call for the 30th and 31st is promising, but keep in mind it’s a week and a half out, so don’t book the time off just yet. The crowd factor is listed as “often,” so if it does come together, expect company.
Rusty, signing off.
