The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for the Lesconil area. We’ve got a 16-day window stretching from July 17th to August 1st, and truth be told, there’s not a single day that’s going to get a surfer out of bed before dawn. The forecast shows a whole lot of flatness and a whole lot of frustration.
The first week and a half is a write-off. From Friday the 17th all the way through to Sunday morning the 26th, we’re looking at nothing but tiny, weak dribble. Swell heights barely scrape 1 ft to 2 ft, with periods mostly under 8 seconds, which is just wind chop at best. The combined wave energy is laughably low – often in the single digits or just barely scraping into double digits (6 to 72). The winds are a disaster, too; mostly cross-on or cross, with a few glassy windows but surf that’s too small to do anything with. It’s heartbreaking.
Finally, around Monday the 27th, things start to look a little more interesting. The swell picks up, but it’s still a messy affair. On Monday afternoon, we see a quick pulse of 5 ft from the west, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 472 – that’s moderate energy, finally. The wind is cross-off from the west at 19 mph, so it’ll be clean. But the wave comment still says “poor surf conditions,” so it’s likely a choppy, lumpy mess for a beach and reef setup.
Tuesday the 28th keeps the swell around 3 ft to 4 ft from the west-northwest, with energy dropping to 235 in the morning and 182 in the afternoon. Still cross-off winds, so it’s clean, but the period is short (7 to 6 seconds). That’s not going to give you any real shape.
Wednesday the 29th is the closest thing to a standout we’ve got, and even then, it’s a stretch. Swell holds at 3 ft from the west-northwest, with a period of 10 seconds – that’s a touch more period, so a bit more push. The combined energy is 236 in the morning, jumping to 329 in the afternoon. The wind is strong from the west-northwest at 25 to 28 mph, cross-off, so it’ll be clean but howling. For a break like Lesconil, which is a beach and reef setup exposed to the west-southwest, this westerly swell is coming from a decent direction. But the water temperature is a wild 69°F – that’s 6°F above normal, which is very unusual for this time of year. It’s like someone left the heater on.
After that, the energy fades again. Thursday the 30th through to August 1st shows a slow decline back to 1 ft to 2 ft, with energy dropping from 137 down to 33. The winds stay cross-off, so it’s clean, but there’s just no swell to work with.
Honestly, if you’re a beginner, the 1 ft to 1 ft days are safe for paddling practice, but that’s about it. The 5 ft day on the 27th is borderline for beginners, but the short period and lumpy conditions make it a challenge. The 3 ft days on the 29th might be borderline for experts, but the wind is so strong it’s more of a windsurfing or kiting session than a surfing one. For a beach and reef setup with those strong winds, it’s honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, what’s the best on offer? Wednesday the 29th, with that 3 ft west-northwest swell and 10-second period, and the combined energy hitting 329. But with 28 mph winds, it’s going to be a battle. If you’re an experienced local who knows how to handle a strong cross-off, you might get some clean, fast walls. But it’s not a day for the faint-hearted.
Otherwise, keep your board in the car and wait. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a long, blank stretch.
Rusty.
