The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next week and a half is looking pretty grim for a proper surf at Lesconil. We’ve got a lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind, lumpy conditions, and mostly small, weak swell. For the first few days, from Sunday the 23rd right through to Wednesday the 26th, it’s pretty much a write-off. You’re looking at tiny waves—nothing over 4.5ft—and even that’s a mess. The wind is blowing onshore or cross, making it choppy and bumpy. There’s just no push, and with the swell energy so weak, you’d be fighting for scraps. Not worth stretching the arms for.

Now, things get interesting later on. Keep your eyes on Thursday the 27th. The swell starts to build in the morning, but it’s still blown out with a strong cross-shore wind and messy. The energy jumps up, which is a solid moderate pulse. But the real window opens up on Thursday afternoon and into Friday the 28th. The swell jumps up to 8ft to 11.5ft, coming from the southwest, with strong energy. The wind backs off to a cross-offshore, cleaning it right up. This is the standout period. The wave comment is saying it’s too big for this spot, and honestly, at 11.5ft with that kind of energy, this is only for the experienced crew. Beginners, stay well clear. This is proper, heavy beach and reef surf. The period is a short 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit shifty, but the size and the clean conditions make it a serious go.

Saturday the 29th still has some size on offer, with 6.5ft to 8ft waves and clean conditions in the morning, but the energy is dropping off. It’s still a good session, but not the peak that Friday is.

From Sunday the 30th onwards, the party winds down. We get a few days of small, weak surf, mostly under 3.5ft, with mixed winds and choppy conditions. The 31st has a bit of a pulse at 4.25ft, but the energy is weak. By the 1st of September, it’s back to tiny, ordinary waves. There’s a glassy moment on the morning of Thursday the 3rd, but the swell is only 1.3ft, so it’s flat.

The bottom line: This is a two-day window, and it’s all about Friday the 28th. If you’re an expert and don’t mind some serious power, that’s your day. For everyone else, the next few weeks are for checking the charts or the kitesurfing gear, because this is looking more like a wind sport setup than a pure paddle session for most of the period.

The water’s about average for the time of year, no big anomaly to report, so it’s just your typical late August sea.

Catch you in the water if you’re brave enough.
