The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks down at Lesconil.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow start. The first week is proper flat, with barely a ripple to get excited about. We’re lookin’ at a gap of several days here with nothin’ worth paddling out for. The water’s warm though, sittin’ at 70°, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year – feels like a bath, but without the waves to go with it.
The first real hint of life pops up on Monday the 27th of July. The wind swings offshore from the NW, and we’ve got a 5ft swell from the WNW chuggin’ in at 9 seconds. That combined energy’s sittin’ at 343 (moderate wave energy), which gets the heart beatin’ a little faster. The morning looks like the pick of it, with fresh offshore winds keepin’ things clean. The afternoon gets a bit too blowy though, with that wind hittin’ 25 mph – strong offshore and clean, but you’ll be workin’ twice as hard to paddle into 'em.
Tuesday the 28th is a similar story. Another 5ft to 5ft swell from the WNW, with a solid 368 to 422 energy reading. The morning has a moderate breeze, but the afternoon gets that strong offshore again – it’ll be clean, but it’s expert territory when it’s over 5ft and that wind is howlin'. This setup is a beach and reef, and with that much power and strong offshore wind, it might actually be more fun for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Now, the real standout for the whole stretch is Wednesday the 29th of July. Wednesday morning is the one to circle. The swell drops a touch to 4ft from the WNW, but the period stretches to 10 seconds, givin’ the waves a bit more shape and punch. The wind is a light offshore breeze from the NW, makin’ it *glassy* clean. The energy is still a solid 251 (moderate). This is the best balance of size, wind, and quality we’re gonna get. It’s not huge, but it’ll be fun and clean for anyone who can handle a 4ft wave.
The rest of the week into the start of August is a slow fade. There’s a few mornings with small, clean, offshore wind (like Thursday the 30th and Sunday the 2nd of August) but the swell is just too small to really get excited about—3ft and droppin'. The wave energy drops from 122 down to a measly 65. It’s surfable, but only just.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off. The best bet is that Wednesday the 29th of July. Get up early for the clean, light offshore conditions and the best quality swell of the window. After that, it’s a slow fade into small, weak waves.
Rusty.
