The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s cooking for Lesconil over the next couple of weeks. Truth is, this forecast is a real grinder. The start is totally flat and messy, and the real action doesn’t show up until the end of the week and into early September.
Right now, there’s nothing. From Sunday, the 23rd of August through to Tuesday, the 1st of September, it’s pretty much a dead zone. Tiny, weak swell – most of it under 3 ft – and the wind is either cross-on or just plain wrong. The water temp at the start is about 64°, which is a touch cooler than average, but nothing wild. The surf? Forget it. Combined swell energy is in the double digits and low hundreds (79 to 124), meaning the ocean’s got no push. Poor conditions across the board.
Thursday the 27th of August morning sends in a pulse – a 6 ft southwest swell with an 8-second period. Energy jumps to 558 (moderate) but the wind is cross-shore, and it’s only marginal at best. That afternoon it’s 7 ft from the southwest, 682 energy, but a fresh cross-shore wind kills the quality. Still, not a surfer’s wave.
Friday the 28th of August gets interesting, but not in a good way. A 8 ft southwest groundswell rolls in with an 11-second period – proper push. But the wind is a near gale from the WSW – 34 mph in the morning, 28 mph in the afternoon. That’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle surfing. Combined energy hits 2340 and 1202 (strong to very strong). It’s clean, but the swell is way too big for this break.
Saturday the 29th of August is the biggest day. Morning is a 10 ft west swell, 10-second period, energy 1628. Afternoon is similar at 8 ft. Wind is cross-offshore. The guidance says the winds and tides are favourable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for Lesconil – over 8 ft means experts only. If you’re an experienced charger and the tide aligns, this is the standout of the entire forecast. For most, it’s a pass.
Sunday the 30th of August drops back to 4 ft to 4 ft from the WNW, clean with cross-offshore wind. Energy sits around 236 – weak to moderate. Conditions are clean, but the swell is small and ordinary. Worth a look if you’re desperate.
Monday the 31st of August sees a morning offshore from the NW at 9 mph, with a tiny 2 ft swell from the NW, period 7 seconds. Clean but weak – energy just 88. Surfable but very ordinary.
Into the first week of September, it gets small again. 1st and 2nd September – tiny waves around 0.7 ft to 1 ft, cross-shore or onshore wind. Forget it. Then a late pulse on the 4th and 5th of September. Friday the 4th morning has 6 ft from the WSW, period 6 seconds, energy 266 – weak and sloppy. The afternoon gets a 7 ft west groundswell, 9 seconds, 686 energy, but again, the guidance says too big for the break.
Saturday the 5th of September morning is 6 ft from the west, 8 seconds, 393 energy, clean but marginal. The afternoon is 6 ft, cross-shore wind, messy.
Then the heavy stuff returns on Sunday the 6th of September: 10 ft west swell, 10-second period, energy 1760 to 2010. Clean or with a cross-chop, but it’s way too big. Monday the 7th of September is the same – 10 ft, 10 seconds, 2460 to 2730, huge energy, clean, but too big for this spot.
Honestly, for the average surfer, there’s nothing worth paddling out for until maybe the 31st of August for a weak, clean little wave. The only real standout for experienced surfers is Saturday the 29th of August. That’s the one with the clean, heavy 10 ft west swell. But don’t be fooled – it’s big and not for the faint of heart.
That’s the story from Lesconil. A long, flat spell to start, then a couple of monster swells that’ll either light you up or eat you alive.
