The Lowdown
Rusty here, looking out at the Lesconil forecast.
To start, it’s a pretty flat run. We’ve got a mix of small, bumpy surf and onshore wind for the first few days, with poor conditions basically all the way through to the end of the month. The water’s sitting at about 65°, which is about average for this time of year, so no big surprises there.
The real action fires up on Thursday the 27th of August, with a huge pulse of swell rolling in. The wave energy is massive, with readings well up in the thousands (1919). But for a "beach and reef" spot like this, a 10ft west swell with 10-second periods is just too much. It’s expert-only if anything. The wind is offshore early that morning, so it’ll look clean, but it’s simply too powerful for a comfortable paddle.
Friday the 28th of August is absolutely insane. Swell heights of 18ft, with the combined energy hitting 6356. That’s next-level power. Again, the wind is clean and cross-offshore, but for Lesconil, that’s not surfable for anyone but the absolute elite. Honestly, at that size, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We see a drop over the weekend of the 29th and 30th, but it’s still big. Saturday morning has a 8ft swell with clean cross-off winds, but the forecast notes clearly say it’s too big for this break.
The best chance for most of us comes on Monday the 31st of August. The swell has dropped to a more manageable 5ft to 6ft from the west, with moderate offshore winds. That’s the first real opportunity for a proper, clean session. The break is very consistent, so you won’t be waiting long. But the crowds are often here, so don’t sleep in.
After a short lull, another big swell arrives around Wednesday the 2nd of September. The standout is Wednesday afternoon, with a 6ft west swell and clean cross-offshore winds, with a solid 10-second period. This looks excellent for experienced surfers, with a wave energy of 1064. It’s going to be a proper setup with good shape and power.
From Thursday the 3rd of September onward, it’s back to big, choppy, and windy conditions, with swells consistently over 8ft through the first week of September. The wind stays cross-off or offshore, keeping it clean, but the power is too much for most. There are a couple of smaller, cleaner days around the 5th and 6th of September, but the swell drops off fast.
So the best on offer is the two-day window of Monday the 31st of August and Wednesday the 2nd of September. Monday is the best for the average surfer, while Wednesday afternoon is the standout for anyone with some experience looking for a proper, clean session.
That’s the long-range look from here.
Stay salty,
Rusty
