The Lowdown
Alright, let's get stuck into it. This is Rusty, and I've been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it's a bit of a mixed bag, but there are a couple of windows that'll get you out there.
Right out of the gate, we've got some action on Thursday the 20th of August. Lesconil (a beach and reef setup) has a solid 7 ft swell rolling in from the WNW, but that wind is a real issue. Thursday morning, it's a moderate offshore breeze at 16 mph, giving us clean lines, but the energy is only moderate (608). The afternoon picks up a fresh cross-offshore wind, still clean, but the score is just not there. It's surfable, but not the best day.
The real standout of this first week has to be Friday morning, the 21st of August. The wind at Lesconil goes light offshore from the NW at 9 mph, and we've got a clean 5 ft swell from the WNW with a 10-second period. The combined energy is moderate (459), and the conditions are described as "gentle offshore and clean." That's the sweet spot. It's a very consistent break, and with that light offshore wind, the waves should be well-shaped and fun. For a beginner-friendly spot like Lesconil, this is as good as it gets.
The rest of the first week and into the start of the second week is grim. A big gap of poor surf opens up from Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 25th. The swell is tiny, wind is onshore, and the energy figures are weak (under 100). Just a blank run of unsurfable conditions.
We get a bit of a pulse on Wednesday the 26th of August, with a 6 ft SW swell (7-second period), but it's cross-offshore wind and the energy is moderate (359). It's clean, but the short period means the waves won't have much shape. The following days are similar – moderate swells, but the wind is either cross or cross-off, and the quality is just marginal.
Now, looking a bit further out, there's a real big unit on the horizon. On Monday the 31st of August, the charts are showing a 7 ft WNW swell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1425. That's a powerful swell. But, and it's a big but, the guidance says it's predicted to be too big for this break. The wind is a fresh cross-shore, so it's going to be lumpy and messy. For most surfers, it's a no-go, but if you're an expert, you might want to keep an eye on it. The same goes for the morning of the 4th of September, with an 8 ft WSW swell and huge energy (1359) – again, too big for the break.
The best bet in the second week might be the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. We've got a 6 ft WNW swell, moderate offshore wind from the NW, and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (572), and while it's not a perfect score, it's a solid, clean, and surfable option. Also, Wednesday the 2nd of September looks promising with a 6 ft W swell, a light breeze, and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (557) and the forecast says "expect very good surf conditions." That could be a sneaky good day.
That's the picture from here. It's a waiting game, but those Friday morning and the early September windows are worth marking on the calendar.
Rusty.
