The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, lettin’ you know what’s cookin’ for the next couple weeks at our local sand and rock stretch.

This forecast is a bit of a slow cooker, to be honest. We’ve got a good stretch of small, weak surf up front that’s not worth paddling out for. The real talk starts mid-week, and there’s a couple moments that might get the blood pumping, but you’ve gotta pick your windows.

First up through Tuesday, the 20th of August, it’s mostly tiny junk. Swell sits under 3 ft with periods around 7 to 9 seconds, and combined energy is weak to moderate (17 to 260). The wind is mostly offshore or cross-offshore, so the water looks clean, but the waves just don’t have the push to make it worth getting wet. You’re looking at poor conditions and surf that’s barely breaking.

Come Thursday afternoon, the 20th of August, we start to see some size creep in – 6 ft of WNW swell with a 9-10 second period, and the energy ramps up to 672 (moderate energy). The cross-off wind keeps it clean, but the forecast still calls it marginal, so don't expect perfection.

Now, Friday morning, the 21st of August – that’s the first real standout. Winds go light offshore from the NW at 6 mph, which is about as clean as it gets. The swell drops to a more manageable 5 ft from the WNW, period 10 seconds, and the energy sits at 358. Lesconil is a beginner-friendly, very consistent beach and reef setup that loves a WSW swell direction, so while this isn’t optimum direction, the light wind and clean conditions make it the pick of the first week. The water temp is about average for the time of year.

Then we hit a flat spell. From Saturday the 22nd of August right through to Wednesday the 27th of August, it’s a total bust. Swell drops to a pathetic 0.3 ft at times, the wind gets messy and cross-onshore, and you’re staring at combined energy values below 100. Don't bother.

Thursday the 27th of August shows a pulse of 5 ft to 5 ft from the west, with a short 8-second period, and energy of 290. The wind is cross-off, so it’s clean, but the forecast says marginal – probably a bit raw and bumpy.

The second week has a couple of big stories. On the 29th of August, Saturday, the morning is flat again, but the afternoon throws down a massive 8 ft swell from WSW with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy surges to 897 (strong energy). That’s expert-only territory for sure, and the file says it’s actually too big for this break. Wind is moderate cross-off, but that size makes it more of a big-wave, heavy-beast session only for the pros – and honestly, with that short period, it’ll be a washing machine. Might be more interesting for the kite crowd than a paddle.

Finally, Sunday morning the 30th of August offers a last chance: 6 ft from the west, 9-second period, energy at 661 (strong), with a fresh offshore WNW wind at 19 mph. Clean, powerful, but still a bit big for the average surfer. The period is moderate, so it’ll have some shape, but it’s a long way out so keep an eye on it.

Overall, the one real standout is that early Friday morning (21st), when the wind goes glassy and the swell is just big enough. The big stuff on the 29th is a spectacle for experts only.

Rusty.
