The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got the full 16-day picture for you from here at Lesconil. A bit of a slow start, but there’s a solid window of fun waves coming up, so let’s wade through it.
The early part of the period is a bit of a non-event. Right now, we’re looking at a weak, poorly formed swell with a light cross-off wind, but it’s only knee-high at best and the energy is minimal (87). The next few days are a bit of a waiting game. Wednesday afternoon sees a bump in size to around waist-high, and the wind goes offshore, which is promising, but the energy is still moderate (477) and the conditions are described as marginal. Thursday morning, the 20th, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell picks up to chest-high (7ft) from the WNW, with a clean offshore breeze. The wave energy is ramping up nicely (625) and the forecast is calling for *very good surf conditions*. This is the standout of the first week. The swell direction is a good match for the optimum WSW, and the offshore wind will keep the faces clean. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Friday morning on the 21st is still shoulder-high with a clean offshore wind, and the energy is solid (398), but it’s a notch down from the peak. The rest of the weekend and into the following week, the swell backs right off, with a lot of days of poor surf or tiny, weak waves. The energy drops into the double digits, and the wind goes all over the place. There’s a long gap of nothing much from the 22nd through the 26th, with only a few glimpses of surfable but ordinary waves.
Now, look ahead to the 27th of August. Thursday morning brings a new pulse of groundswell from the WNW, pushing 5ft with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is light and cross-off, and the energy is moderate (344). The forecast says “good surf conditions,” so this is the next real highlight. It’s a cleaner, more powerful option after the lull.
The following Saturday morning, the 29th, also looks promising. Another 5ft from the W with a proper offshore wind and moderate energy (326). The Sunday morning on the 30th is also on the radar – 4ft, clean, light wind, and a solid 9-second period.
The end of the run gets a bit weird. The 31st and 1st of September see a bigger swell building, but with poor wind for the most part. The 1st has an 8ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is onshore, making it a messy, blown-out affair. The forecast even notes the swell may be too big for this break. It’s really only for the experts, and even then, the conditions are not great.
The final few days of the forecast, the 2nd and 3rd of September, settle back down to clean, waist-high waves with light winds and good energy. A nice way to finish.
So, in summary: the best bet is Thursday morning, 20th August, for the cleanest, most powerful surf of the run. The secondary window is the 27th and 29th of August for some solid, cleaner waves. The rest is a lot of waiting and small stuff.
Rusty.
