The Lowdown
Right folks, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks here at Lesconil. I’ll be honest with you, it’s a bit of a slow burner. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off for any decent waves. The water is a staggering 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s worth getting excited about early on.
We kick off on Friday, July 17th, with tiny 1ft swell from the west, but it’s blown out by a cross-offshore wind. The energy is weak (16), and it’s just a mess. Saturday the 18th flirts with us – a glassy morning with the same 1ft west swell, but there’s just no push. The afternoon gets a fresh 22 mph offshore, which would be epic if there was any swell to work with.
Sunday the 19th brings a bit more size, around 3ft, but it’s from the east with a short, snappy 4-second period and a lumpy cross-onshore wind. Same story all the way through to the end of July. We get teased with clean conditions on the 22nd and 26th, but the swell is tiny. The energy stays low, most of it under 100, so you’re just bobbing around.
Then things change. The first real standout arrives on Wednesday, July 29th, in the afternoon. We’ve got a 8ft swell from the west-northwest, but here’s the catch – it’s too big for this spot. The wind and tide are favorable, but the combined energy is strong (654), and the period is a short 7 seconds, meaning it’ll be a close-out mess. This one is for experts only, and even then, it’s a gamble.
The best of the whole run, the one you want to circle, is Thursday, July 30th, in the morning. A massive 13ft west-northwest swell with a very long 12-second period rolls in. The combined energy is a beastly 3781. The wind is blowing offshore at 16 mph, so it’ll be clean. However, it’s way too big for Lesconil. This is a true expert-only session, and even then, you’d be pushing it. The break is a beach and reef setup, so that long period will make it grind.
After that, it settles down. The swell drops to 4ft on Saturday, August 1st, with a gentle offshore breeze. The energy is moderate (299), and the waves will be clean. It’s not a stand-out, but after the drought, it’s a welcome sight.
So, the bottom line: The first 11 days are a flat spell. The only real action is on July 30th, which is a monster but only for the brave. The 29th is also solid but too big. If you’re not a charger, wait for August 1st for a small, clean session.
