The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Lesconil over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week is a bit of a heartbreaker. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, messy conditions. From Sunday the 19th right through to Sunday the 26th, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the wind is all over the place – cross-onshore, lumpy, choppy. You’d be better off waxing your board and staring at the wall. There’s a glimmer of glassy conditions on the 23rd and 24th, but the swell is so weak (combined energy of all swells directed here at just 44 and 35) that it’s not even a ripple.
Finally, we get a pulse of life on Monday the 27th morning. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the WNW with a moderate offshore wind, and the combined energy climbs to 116 (moderate). It’s surfable, but still very ordinary. Not a standout, just a sign that things are waking up.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday the 28th morning is a real turning point. The swell lifts to 5ft from the WNW with a 8-second period, combined energy hits 286 (moderate), and we’ve got a gentle cross-offshore breeze. That’s clean, fun waves for the intermediate crowd. But the real standout? Wednesday the 29th morning. This is the one to circle. The swell is 6ft from the WNW, period 10 seconds, combined energy a strong 518, and the wind is glass – absolutely dead calm. That’s going to be pure, groomed lines at the Lesconil beach and reef. It’s a bit too big for groms, but for the experienced surfer, it’s a dream. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st keep the goodness rolling with 5ft to 6ft swell and clean offshore winds, though the afternoon sessions get a bit of a fresher breeze that can make things lumpy. Then, Saturday the 1st of August morning is another barnstormer. We’re looking at 7ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, combined energy of a massive 1447 (strong to very strong), and light offshore winds. That’s excellent, powerful surf, but it’s firmly in the experts-only zone. Beginners, stay on the beach for this one.
By Sunday the 2nd and Monday the 3rd, the wind swings onshore and the quality drops off a cliff, so get your fill earlier.
Bottom line: The first week is a washout. The standout sessions are Wednesday the 29th morning and Saturday the 1st of August morning. Both offer solid, clean swell with favorable winds. Wednesday is the more user-friendly of the two, while Saturday is for the crew who want to get pitted.
Rusty.
