The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty grim. There’s a long stretch of small, weak, and messy surf, so don't get your hopes up for anything good until we get into early August. We’re talking a solid 10 days of barely ridable stuff before a real pulse shows up.
The only break on the menu is Port Bara. It’s an exposed spot, and it’s a fairly consistent wave, but it’s been copping a beating from onshore winds for days. The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Tuesday, 28th July. The wind swings offshore from the ESE at a gentle 9 mph, cleaning things up. The swell is a tiny 2 ft from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak, just 43. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The water temp is about 67°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – not a huge deal, but nice to know.
We get a few more mornings with offshore winds and clean conditions, like Wednesday the 29th and Tuesday the 4th of August, but the swell stays stubbornly small and weak. The wind is light, but the waves are just not there.
Now, for the real standout. Mark your calendars for the morning of Sunday, 2nd August. This is the one. A solid 6 ft swell from the west, with a period of 10 seconds, is forecast. The combined energy jumps to 687 – that’s a serious push. Wind is offshore from the ENE at a gentle 9 mph, which will keep things clean. The forecast calls for “very good surf conditions.” This is the best of the whole 16-day window. That size is solid for intermediates, but it’s getting up there for beginners. The set waves will have some punch. After that, the following Monday morning, 3rd August, still has a clean 3 ft west swell with offshore winds, so it’s not a one-hit wonder, but that Sunday is the clear winner.
Past that, the wind gets messy again and the swell drops back down. Tuesday the 5th of August morning has a glassy session with a tiny 2 ft swell, great for a log, but nothing to write home about.
So, the call is simple: suffer through the flat spell, and be ready for Sunday morning, 2nd August at Port Bara. That’s your window.
