The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into what’s coming up for Port Bara. It’s a bit of a rough start, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

The next week or so is looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a solid run of onshore winds and messy conditions that’ll keep the waves mostly junk. The combined swell energy is moderate to strong through the first few days, hitting 639-813 (moderate energy) on Monday and Tuesday, but the wind is just ruining it. A near gale on Tuesday morning with 31 mph cross-onshore winds – that’s a write-off. Wednesday ain’t much better.

We finally get a break on Thursday the 10th – a tiny window of glassy conditions in the morning. The swell is only 2ft from the west, with a weak 54 (weak energy) and a short 8-second period. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. You’ll be fighting for scraps. Another glassy morning pops up on Saturday the 12th, but again, it’s just 2ft and weak energy at 79 (weak energy). Not much to write home about.

The real standout is shaping up for Thursday the 17th of September. That morning, the wind turns offshore from the ENE at 9 mph, and the swell comes in at 5ft from the west with a 10-second period. The combined energy is a solid 512 (moderate energy), and the conditions are described as “gentle offshore and clean.” This is the best window of the whole period. It’s a solid intermediate swell, clean, and the direction is close to the optimum WSW. Just be aware that at Port Bara, crowds are often a thing, so you won’t be alone.

Friday the 18th morning also offers a decent look with 4ft west swell and easterly offshore winds, but the energy drops to 287 (weak to moderate). It’s a good backup, but not the main event.

The rest of the second week fades into smaller, weaker swells with onshore winds again. The 16th of September has a bit of a cross-shore wind and 5ft swell, but it’s only a marginal call. The 22nd of September has offshore winds but the swell is down to 3ft with a short 7-second period.

So, the pick of the litter is Thursday the 17th September morning. Get out there before the wind swings around in the afternoon.

Rusty.
