The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim start. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor conditions with barely a ripple worth paddling for. The first decent chance doesn’t roll around until the morning of Wednesday the 12th, and even then it’s nothing to write home about. The pattern is mostly onshore wind and weak, messy swell.
The best of a bad bunch is shaping up to be Port Bara on the morning of Friday the 21st of August. That’s a solid week and a half away, so keep it in the back of your mind. We’ll have a clean 2ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is set to be a clean offshore breeze from the east-southeast at 12 mph, which is a major positive. It’ll be small and clean, not a classic, but it’s the only window that looks genuinely surfable. The combined swell energy is a modest 81.
Before that, there are a few fleeting moments. The morning of Wednesday the 12th sees a tiny 2ft west swell with a 10-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is only 53, so don’t expect much push. The morning of Thursday the 20th also has a clean 2ft west swell with a 9-second period, and a light cross-offshore wind from the north-northwest at 9 mph. Combined energy sits at 87. It’s small but clean, and better than the rest.
The water temperature here is 68°, which is about 1° warmer than the norm for this time of year. Nothing too unusual.
The second week gets a bit more active, but it’s all ruined by strong onshore winds. From the 22nd onwards, the swell size picks up, but the wind is howling from the west and southwest, making it a mess. By the 23rd, we see a 7ft west-southwest swell with a short 8-second period and a fresh cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy jumps to 549, but the conditions are lumpy and poor. It’s a washout.
Forget the second week for surfing. It’s a write-off unless you’ve got a kite.
Stay patient, and pencil in that Friday the 21st morning for a small, clean session.
