The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about Ajo.
Alright, straight up – if you’re lookin’ for a good session at Ajo over the next couple weeks, you’re gonna have to be patient. This is a beginner-friendly, exposed NW spot that’s very consistent, but the wind and swell timing are mostly working against us here. The water is about 74°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – not a huge anomaly but nice if you’re in.
The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 22nd has some NW swell around 3 to 4 ft (energy around 145-186), but that east-northeast wind is blowin’ 12-19 mph cross-shore, makin’ a lumpy mess. Sunday the 23rd starts off glassy early with a tiny 2 ft NNE windswell, period only 6 seconds – weak energy (58). It’s surfable but pretty ordinary. Monday the 24th is even smaller, around 2-2 ft, and the wind swings around.
Tuesday the 25th is flat – 0.7 ft, glassy mornin’ but no power. Wednesday the 26th shows a tiny 1 ft NW groundswell (period 10 seconds, energy 50) under glassy conditions again – still very ordinary. So there’s a gap of a few days here with no real recommendation.
Thursday the 27th picks up to 6 ft NW swell (period 8-9 seconds, energy 459-561), but that westerly wind is punchin’ 16 mph cross-shore, wreckin’ the surface. Not worth paddlin’ out.
Now, the standouts: Saturday the 30th of August is your best bet. The morning is glassy, with a clean 4 ft NW swell comin’ from the optimum direction, period 9 seconds, energy 272. That’s a solid fun-size wave for beginners, and with zero wind it’ll be clean. Crowds are often here, so expect a few out, but it’ll be worth it for the quality.
For the more experienced crew, Monday the 1st of September has a small 3 to 3 ft NW swell but the wind is messy again. Not a standout.
There’s a big pulse comin’ in around Thursday the 3rd of September – 7 to 7 ft NW groundswell with a very long 13 second period (energy over 1300). But this is way too big for Ajo – the data says it’s too big for this break. The wind is light and offshore in the morning, but the size and long period will make it a tough paddle, and the break can’t handle it. Only for experts if you’re desperate, but honestly, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days. The swell stays strong into Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th (7 to 8 ft, energy over 1300 again) but the wind gets strong and cross, making it messy anyway.
After that, the swell drops back to around 5-5 ft by the 6th, but the wind stays unfavourable.
So bottom line: the standout is the morning of Saturday the 30th of August – glassy, clean, fun 4 ft NW swell. Mark it. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big for this spot.
Rusty.
