The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local stretch.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a bit of a tough watch. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, messy, and generally poor conditions. There’s no standout surf to get excited about anywhere in the window. The first few days won’t give you much to work with at all, and the pattern doesn’t really improve. The best we can say is that things might become slightly less terrible further into the second week, but it’s a low bar.
Let’s start with the only spot on the map, Ajo. It’s a beginner-friendly, very consistent break that’s open to the swell. Right now, the water is sitting at 72°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year—a real anomaly there.
For the first week, from Wednesday the 15th through to the 23rd, it’s a real struggle. Swell heights are tiny, mostly under 2 ft, with periods often around 5 seconds, meaning weak, short-period windswell. The wind is almost always cross or cross-onshore, leaving the surface choppy and bumpy. On Saturday the 18th, we do get a glassy morning, but the swell is only 2 ft and the combined energy is a measly 31. It’s barely rideable on a log. The combined energy only breaks into the moderate range (100+) on Monday the 20th, with 5 ft NNE swell at 7 seconds, but it’s cross and cross-onshore, so it’s not clean. This pattern of small, weak, and onshore holds through the 24th.
The second week offers a little more energy, but it comes with its own problems. From the 25th of July into the 30th, swell heights tick up to 4 ft - 4 ft at times. On the 25th morning, there’s a 1 ft NW groundswell with a very long period of 12 seconds, but it’s almost nothing. The real event is on the 30th of July, a Thursday morning. We get a 4 ft NNW swell with a long period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is a strong 435. That’s the highest energy of the entire forecast. But here’s the kicker—the wind is cross-onshore at 15 km/h, so it’ll be lumpy. That long-period NNW groundswell would be better suited to a point or reef, but we’re stuck with a beach break setup here. It’s a lot of energy, but it’s going to be a messy, choppy affair.
So, the honest truth is there’s no gold in this 16-day window. The only slight flicker of something is that 30th of July pulse, but it’s not going to be clean. If you’re desperate, the glassy morning of the 18th might give you a knee-high count, but that’s it. Things can change, but for now, don’t bother waxing up.
Rusty.
