Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ajo over the next 16 days.
Alright mates, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Ajo is a tough one to write about.
We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing special. The first solid recommendation doesn't show up until Friday the 18th, and even that's a stretch. The water is sitting at 73°F which is a massive 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s weird, like stepping into a bath weird.
Let’s run through it. From now until the 17th, it’s mostly flat or tiny, with poor surf conditions every single day. The wind is almost always on it or cross-on, and the swell is weak. The combined energy barely cracks 100 (104) on Saturday the 11th afternoon, but it’s a messy cross-shore wind with a 2ft NW windswell, so it’s not worth paddling out for.
The first real pulse of energy shows up on Saturday morning, July 18th. Swell jumps to 4ft from the NW with a 6-second period. The combined energy hits 124 – moderate – but it’s blowing 12 mph from the W, cross-shore, and the conditions are poor. That’s more of a kite session than a surf session, to be honest.
The one standout, and I mean the only one that gets my heart rate up, is Sunday afternoon, July 19th. The wind swings offshore from the NNW at 6 mph, and we get a 3ft NW groundswell with an 8-second period. The combined energy is 159 – moderate. That’s clean, glassy conditions with a light breeze. For a beginner break like Ajo, that’s as good as it gets in this run. The swell direction is dead-on from the NW, which is the optimum. It’s small, but it’ll be clean and fun for a longboard or a foamie. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
After that, it drops back into the doldrums. The 25th of July shows another 4ft NW swell, but the wind is cross-on at 12 mph, making it choppy. The energy is strong (327), but the quality is poor.
So, bottom line: if you’re keen, make the most of Sunday the 19th afternoon. That’s your window. Everything else is a flat spell or blown out.
