Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Ajo are looking pretty flat and quiet. It's a real bummer because this spot is usually a reliable little wave for beginners, but we're going to have a long stretch of nothing much to write home about.
The first week is basically a write-off. From Monday the 6th right through to Friday the 10th, we're looking at tiny surf with poor conditions. The swell is small, mostly around 0.7ft to 2ft from the NW, and the wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, or onshore. It's just not worth paddling out.
Now, there is a tiny glimmer on Friday morning, the 10th of July. The wind goes glassy, and we get a little 2ft NW swell. The combined energy is weak (49), so it's small, but for a complete beginner, you might find a knee-high wave that's clean. It's a very ordinary option, but it's the only surfable wave in the whole outlook.
After that, it's back to the doldrums. We get a few days of small, weak NW swells, but the wind is always wrong – cross, cross-on, or onshore. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
The second week is more of the same. We finally see a bump in swell on Monday the 20th, with 3ft from the NW, but the wind is still messy. The combined energy is a bit more noticeable (82), but with cross-shore winds, it's still going to be a bumpy, choppy mess.
The real tease comes right at the end of the forecast. On Tuesday the 21st of July, we get a 4ft NW swell with a combined energy of 272 (moderate wave energy). That's a real swell, but it's coming in with a rain shower and a stiff cross-onshore breeze. The setup will be too chopped up for a decent paddle session, and honestly, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than a proper surf. It's a shame, because the size is there, but the wind is going to ruin it.
So, overall, there's no standout session here. The only thing even close to a recommendation is that glassy Friday morning the 10th for the absolute beginners. For the rest of us, save your wax and wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
