The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the charts for Ajo, and it’s a bit of a slow burn. The water is sitting at 74°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a couple of degrees above normal, so you might not need the thickest suit.
We’ve got a long stretch of flat, weak conditions to kick things off. From Monday the 17th through to Wednesday the 19th, it’s a total write-off. The swell is tiny, the energy is bottomed out, and the winds are all wrong. You’re better off doing something else.
The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, the 20th. A small NW swell rolls in at about 4 ft, with a period of 11 seconds, and the energy picks up to 273. The wind is glassy, so it’s clean. But the swell is still small and the period is long, so it might be a bit tricky at a beach break – the waves could be a bit too straight. Still, if you’re desperate, it’s the best we’ve seen.
Friday the 21st stays in the same range, with a 5 ft NW swell, but the wind turns cross-shore with light rain, making it look rough. The energy is solid at 407, but the conditions are only marginal.
The weekend is a bit of a downer. Saturday morning the 22nd has a 3 ft NW swell, but the wind is cross-shore and the energy drops to 115. Sunday the 23rd has a glassy morning with a 3 ft NNW swell, but the energy is only 85, which is weak. It’s surfable, but barely.
We’ve got another big gap in quality until Friday the 28th. That’s when the juice really starts to flow. Friday morning looks promising with a 4 ft NW swell, 10-second period, and glassy offshore winds. The energy is 417 – a solid, moderate pulse. That’s the one to circle.
But hold on. Friday afternoon the 28th starts to get a bit nuts. The swell jumps to 10 ft from the NW, and the energy rockets to 1597. That’s a big, powerful swell. The wind is onshore, but the real issue is that this spot, Ajo, is going to be absolutely hammered. It’s way too big for a beginner, and even for experts, it’s going to be heavy. The same goes for Saturday the 29th – 13 ft of NW groundswell, with a period of 14 seconds, and energy over 6000. That’s massive. The swell direction is ideal for an exposed NW spot, but the size is the main story. It’s expert-only territory, and it’s likely going to be a washing machine.
By Sunday the 30th, it drops back to about 7 ft, but the wind is messy, and the conditions are marginal. The energy is still 936, which is strong, but the quality is gone.
The final days of the forecast, Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st, are rough with fresh cross-shore winds and lumpy seas. The swell is still there, but you’ll be fighting the wind.
The standout is hands down the Thursday morning, 28th August. That 4 ft NW swell with glassy conditions is the cleanest, most manageable window we’ve got. If you miss that, the next best is the Thursday morning, 20th August, but it’s much smaller. For the brave, the big swell on the 28th afternoon and 29th is there, but it’s a heavy, expert-only mission.
Stay sharp, and don’t get too excited about the long-range stuff – it’s promising, but we’ll know more closer to the day.
Rusty.
