Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ajo over the next 16 days.
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been chewing over the local charts. This 16-day outlook is a tough one for your area. There’s no decent surf until nearly the end of the run. The first real recommendation doesn’t show up until Thursday, July 24th. That means you’re looking at a solid two-week gap of flat or poor conditions before anything gets interesting.
The only break that ever steps up is Ajo – a beginner-friendly, very consistent spot exposed to the NW. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 73°F – that’s nearly 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s like stepping into a bath. That’s a real standout.
The first half of the month is a write-off. Swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, with short periods of 3-10 seconds, and the combined swell energy is weak – often in the double digits (like 15 or 51). The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the comments keep saying “poor surf conditions.” Even on Tuesday, July 14th, when you get a glassy morning, the swell is only 1ft with a period of 5 seconds – barely a ripple. It’s just not happening.
The real glimmer comes on Thursday, July 24th. The morning shows a cleaner setup: a 3ft swell from the NNW with a long period of 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 327, which is moderate energy, and the wind is a gentle cross-shore, keeping things rideable. The afternoon builds to 4ft from the NW, same period, though the wind turns cross-onshore and the conditions get choppier. The morning window is the one to aim for. That longer period means the waves will have more shape and energy, with longer lulls between sets – making it easier to get out the back. For a beginner-friendly spot like Ajo, this is the best on offer, but it’s still a marginal call.
So, if you’re desperate, pencil in the morning of July 24th. For the rest of it, the water is flat. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
