The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, looking at the next 16 days for our stretch of coast. The pattern is a slow burn – we’re starting with a bit of a flat spell and some messy winds, but there’s a solid pulse of energy building for the very end of the month and into early September. The standout window is shaping up to be that last week of August, with a couple of real gems in the mix.
Right now, it’s quiet. Thursday the 20th has a small 4ft NW swell at 11 seconds, but the wind is cross-on, making for poor surf. The afternoon cleans up a little, but it’s not much to write home about. Friday and Saturday are a write-off with stronger winds and lumpy conditions. Sunday the 23rd is tiny, and Monday the 24th offers a clean, offshore 2ft NNE swell, but it’s barely breaking. Things stay flat and small through Tuesday and Wednesday the 26th, with a glassy day on the 25th offering nothing but a ripple.
Then we see a spark. Thursday the 27th of August has a big 8ft NW swell, but it’s clocked as too big for this break, so keep your wits about you if you’re an expert. The real highlight is Friday morning, 28 August. Ajo is delivering a clean 6ft NW swell (565 combined energy) with a cross-offshore light breeze. That’s chest to head-high, clean, and with a bit of energy. The optimum swell direction is NW, and that’s exactly what’s coming. This is the pick of the bunch – a proper session with good shape and no crowds yet.
The following weekend, Saturday the 29th is a bit more marginal, but Sunday morning, 30 August is a stunner. Ajo sees a 5ft NW swell with glassy conditions and zero wind. Magic. That’s a long, clean morning with waist-to-chest high waves peeling nicely. The combined wave energy is moderate (335). If you can get out, that’s the one.
The clean morning runs into Monday 31 August – another glassy start with a 5ft NW swell. Consistent and clean. The afternoon picks up a bit of cross-on breeze, but the morning is golden.
We roll into September with a few more windows. Wednesday morning, 2 September starts glassy with a 5ft NW swell (476 combined energy) – that’s a solid offering. And then the final standout is Friday morning, 4 September – a flat calm, glassy morning with a 4ft NW swell. A beautiful, clean finish to the forecast.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. The winds are mostly light, and when they’re offshore or glassy, the quality jumps right up. This is a region where consistency is good, and the forecast shows a few real gems if you’re patient.
Rusty, signing off.
