The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaking over the next couple of weeks.

For the first few days, it’s a write-off. Saturday the 25th through Sunday the 26th, we’ve got lumpy, cross-onshore winds and a bit of stormy energy floating around, but there’s just no quality to it. The swell is short and weak, only 1.0 to 1ft with a period of 5-6 seconds. Not worth wetting the board.

Then, Monday morning the 27th – that’s our first real window. The wind goes glassy, a light breeze from the NNE at 3 mph, and the swell settles at 4ft from the NNW with a nice long period of 11 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, and the water is reading a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 72°. This is the standout for the whole run. The waves will have some push and shape, and with the glassy conditions, Playa de Galizano will be clean and fun. This is the best on offer, no question. The break is a mix of beach, reef, and point, so that long-period groundswell should line up nicely there. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but it can get crowded often, so expect a few of the locals out.

Monday afternoon sees a shift to a cross-offshore breeze, which is still good, with the swell holding at 5ft and a 10-second period. That’s a solid afternoon session, but the morning is the pick.

Tuesday the 28th keeps the clean cross-off wind with a 4ft NNW swell (10-second period) in the morning. It’s a step down from Monday, but still very surfable. The afternoon drops off, though.

From Wednesday the 29th all the way through Saturday the 9th of August, the surf goes flat to tiny. The swell height drops to 2ft to 3ft, with periods mostly under 9 seconds, and the energy is weak. The wind is often onshore or cross-onshore, and the conditions are poor. There’s a couple of glassy mornings on the 7th and 8th of August, but the swell is just too small to do anything with. That’s a solid 10-day gap with no real quality.

So, look: don’t hold your breath for the second week. The only real chance to get a wave is Monday morning the 27th. If you can get out then, you’ll be stoked. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for this region.

Rusty.
