The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s be straight with you — this outlook for San Vicente Rivermouth is a tough one. Over the entire 16-day run, there’s barely a session that’s worth paddling out for. The combined swell energy is weak for most of it, with numbers like 16 (weak) and only occasional nudges into moderate territory like 104 (moderate) on Monday 20 July morning. Wind is almost always cross-on or onshore, and the swell heights stay tiny. It’s a long, flat spell with a few fleeting moments that might get a single star.
We start Tuesday 14 July morning with some clouds and a light 3 mph cross-on from the NE. Only 1 ft of swell out of the north at a short 5 seconds — combined energy of just 16 (weak). That’s poor surf, no question. The rest of the first week stays the same: tiny 1 ft to 2 ft, cross-on winds, mostly 3 to 6 mph. Wednesday 15 July, Thursday 16 July, Friday 17 July — all the same story. Saturday 18 July morning goes glassy with a 3 mph breeze from the NNW, but the swell collapses to 1.0 ft and a period of just 4 seconds, energy down to 8 (weak). Not even worth a splash.
There’s a gap of flat, poor conditions right through the weekend. Sunday 19 July afternoon sees a jump in wind to 16 mph from the ENE, cross-on, with 3 ft of short-period swell at 4 seconds, energy 37 (weak). That’s choppy and messy. Monday 20 July morning is the first time we see the combined energy tick over 100 — 104 (moderate) — with 4 ft from the NNE at 6 seconds. But the wind is cross-shore from the ENE at 9 mph, and the wave comment is still poor surf conditions. This is the biggest swell of the window, but it’s not clean.
Tuesday 21 July and Wednesday 22 July are much the same: 2 ft to 4 ft, cross or cross-on winds, energy in the 34 to 96 range. Thursday 23 July offers a 1.0 ft to 1 ft NW swell with a long 10-second period, but cross-on winds at 9 mph make it choppy. Then Friday 24 July morning is the closest we get to a standout. Glassy conditions with only 3 mph winds from the ENE, and 3 ft of NW swell at 8 seconds, energy 73 (moderate). The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” — honestly, that’s the best of the lot. It’s a tiny window, and it’s not exciting, but it’s the only time the word “surfable” appears.
After that, Saturday 25 July and Sunday 26 July mornings are glassy again but with only 2 ft of NW swell at 7 seconds (energy 42–33). The final days from 27 July to 29 July show a spike to 3 ft from the NNW on Monday 27 July afternoon with energy 117 (moderate), but it’s onshore wind and poor. The last morning, Wednesday 29 July, is glassy with 2 ft at 9 seconds, energy 46 (weak) — a pretty ending but not a memorable one.
The water temperature anomaly isn’t given here, so I can’t say if it’s warmer or cooler than usual.
Honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’re desperate, Friday 24 July morning is the only session that might give you a tiny, clean ride. The rest is a write-off.
Rusty.
