The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – this outlook for San Vicente Rivermouth is a tough one. The whole 16-day run is looking pretty flat and messy, with no real standout sessions to get excited about. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak swell and poor surf conditions, so don’t go planning your week around it.

The first few days – Thursday the 16th through to Saturday the 18th – are a write-off. Tiny waves around 1.0ft to 2ft, mostly from the north, with period a short 5 seconds. That’s just wind chop, not surf. The wind is on or cross-onshore, and the energy is pathetic – barely cracking 15 (combined energy of all swells directed here). It’s the kind of day you’d be better off fixing your fins.

Come Sunday the 19th, we get a little glimmer. The morning goes glassy – dead calm, no wind – and the swell bumps up to 2ft from the north. Still short period (5 seconds), but that glassy surface means it’ll look clean. Energy is still weak (32), but it’s the best-looking window in the first week. The afternoon stays onshore, so make the most of the early session.

Monday the 20th sees a slight lift: swell reaches 4ft to 4ft from the northeast, period stretching to 7 seconds. The energy jumps into the moderate range (190 to 210). But the wind is cross-onshore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. Not terrible, but not great. It’s a river mouth, so it handles some swell, but 4ft with onshore wind isn’t going to be a classic.

The middle of the week – Tuesday 21st to Thursday 23rd – stays small and choppy. Swell hangs around 4ft to 4ft, but the wind stays cross-onshore, often from the east or northeast, and the period remains short (6 seconds). Energy drops back to the 90-143 range. It’s surfable for beginners, but nothing to write home about.

Then Friday 24th through Sunday 26th, we drop right back down. Swell shrinks to 1ft to 2ft, period a pitiful 5 seconds. Sunday the 26th morning goes glassy again, but the wave is tiny (2ft). The afternoon throws a weird 0.7ft swell from the west-northwest with a long 11-second period, but that’s barely a ripple.

The second week – from Monday 27th onwards – is a bit more interesting energy-wise, but still not delivering quality. The swell builds from the northwest, reaching 4ft by Wednesday the 29th, with period extending to 9 seconds. That’s a reasonable groundswell setup, and the energy is strong (240 to 257). But the wind remains cross-onshore, and the comments all say “poor surf conditions.” The 4ft is okay for intermediates, but it’s not clean.

Thursday the 30th holds 4ft from the northwest, period 9 seconds, but again cross-onshore wind. The energy is still solid (188 to 212), but it’s a frustrating pattern – swell on offer, but the wind spoils it.

The final Friday the 31st fades back to 3ft, with a moderate breeze making it choppy.

Overall, this is a real flat spell for San Vicente Rivermouth. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to note. The crowd profile is “sometimes” busy, but with this lack of surf, it’s unlikely to be a problem. Honestly, there’s no standout day. If you’re desperate, glassy Sunday the 19th morning or the bigger swell Wednesday the 29th might give you a few rides, but keep expectations low. The river mouth setup means it can handle a bit of period, but without clean wind, it’s frustrating.

Rusty.
