The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for San Vicente Rivermouth over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook is a bit of a slow burn. For the first week and a half, we’re looking at a real run of poor surf conditions. From Friday the 17th right through to Monday the 27th of July, the waves are small and weak, with the combined swell energy mostly sitting in the low double-digits to triple-digits, peaking at a pretty modest 265. The wind is a constant problem too, mostly cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and messy. There’s a couple of glassy moments on the morning of Sunday the 19th and again on Sunday the 26th, but with swell heights barely scraping 2ft to 2ft and periods around 6 seconds, there’s just no power behind it. It’s a long stretch of frustration.
The best chance for a proper surf window comes right at the end of the month. Tuesday the 28th of July morning is where things finally spark up. We’ve got glassy conditions, a clean 3ft of swell from the NNW, and the period jumps to 10 seconds, giving it much more grunt. The combined energy reads 267, which is a solid step up. That’s the standout session – a real morning for a longboard or a funboard, with clean lines and no wind to mess them up.
Then on Friday the 31st of July morning, there’s another promising window. The swell is 5ft from the NW, period hangs at 9 seconds, and it’s glassy again. The energy is up to 360, so there’s some proper push. That’s a solid session for an intermediate surfer, but 5ft is getting a bit big for total beginners. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have some company, but the quality should be worth it.
Into Saturday the 1st of August morning, it’s glassy again but the swell drops back to 3ft with an 8-second period and energy down to 133. Surfable, but ordinary – a bit of a come-down after the better days.
So, to sum it up: the first ten days are a write-off. The best on offer is Tuesday the 28th of July morning, and then Friday the 31st of July morning as a close second. Get on those if you can.
Rusty.
