The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here, checking in on the local waves. Alright, we're looking at a pretty flat run ahead for San Vicente Rivermouth. The next couple of weeks are mostly a write-off, with a few glimmers of hope that are just out of reach for a decent paddle. The first real action doesn't show up until Monday the 20th, and even then it's a struggle.

Sunday the 19th is a total dud. Glassy conditions with a tiny 1 ft swell from the northwest, but it's just not enough to break – a complete non-starter.

We get a pulse on Monday morning the 20th. The swell jumps to 5 ft, coming from the north-northeast, but with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined wave energy is moderate at 211, but the wind is glassy. Conditions are described as "surfable waves but very ordinary". It's a small window of clean, small surf, but it's not going to be anything special. The afternoon goes bad with a cross-onshore wind.

Tuesday the 21st is a similar story. Morning glass again with a 4 ft north-northeast swell, but it's still a short period (6 seconds) and the energy is moderate (131). It's a session for a longboard maybe, but nothing to get excited about.

After that, it's a long, dry spell. From Tuesday afternoon the 21st all the way through to Sunday the 27th, the score is zero. That's a solid six-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for. The winds are mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the swell is tiny or poorly aligned.

Now, the pattern shifts a bit. We get a bit of a hope on Monday the 27th. The morning shows glassy conditions with a 2 ft north-northwest swell, but the period jumps to a very long 11 seconds. The energy is still weak (91). That long period means the waves will have more shape and push, but at a river mouth, a long period groundswell can sometimes break too straight. It's a marginal call, but it's the cleanest window we've had in over a week.

Then, on the 1st of August, we see a change. The morning brings a 5 ft north-west swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy is strong at 450, but the wind is a light cross-shore. The forecast says "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions". The swell is getting up there, but the conditions are still not quite right for a perfect session.

The rest of the run into the 3rd of August is messy with onshore winds and choppy conditions. The surf is there, but it's not clean.

So, the standout for this whole period? I've got to point to the Monday 27th of July morning session. It's not a world-beater, but with 2 ft at 11 seconds from the north-northwest and glassy conditions, it's your best bet for a clean, if small, session. The river mouth setup can be tricky with long period swell, but the lack of wind makes it the most appealing option out of a pretty grim run.

The other one to keep an eye on is the Saturday 1st of August morning. The swell is bigger at 5 ft from the northwest, and the energy is strong (450). If the tide lines up, and with that light cross-shore wind, it could be the best wave of the fortnight. But it's a week and a half away, so treat it as a promising but not certain prospect.

Overall, it's a lean period. The river mouth is fairly consistent, but the conditions are just not cooperating. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, but for now, don't be afraid to take a break from the salt.

Rusty.
