The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for San Vicente Rivermouth.
This 16-day stretch is a mixed bag, but there’s some light at the end of the tunnel if you’re patient. The start is pretty flat and messy, with a proper gap of no real surf for the first week or so. Things start to look a bit more promising around the 27th of July, and there’s one standout window that’s worth circling on the calendar.
The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are tiny, with swell only 1 ft and short period, poor conditions top to bottom, so don’t bother suiting up. We’ve got a dry spell until Monday the 20th, when the swell tries to pick up to 5 ft but the wind is already messing it up. The energy is moderate, reading 215, but it’s choppy and messy in the afternoon.
Tuesday the 21st through Thursday the 24th are all pretty poor—waist-high or smaller, with that cross-onshore wind ruining any chance of clean lines. The combined energy barely cracks 100 most of those days, and the wave comment doesn’t lie—it’s all poor.
The weekend of the 26th and 27th of July is when things start to change. Early on the 27th, the swell holds at 5 ft from the NW with a period of 10 seconds, but the morning has rain showers and cross-on wind, so it’s still marginal. The energy is building though, hitting 407 in the morning—that’s a solid push. By Monday afternoon the wind lightens to a light breeze, but it’s still cross-on.
Now, here’s the standout. Tuesday the 28th of July morning is your window. The swell is 5 ft from the NW, with a 9-second period, so some decent shape there. What makes it special is the wind—dead glassy, from the N at only 3 mph. That’s about as clean as it gets. The combined energy is 330, which means there’s moderate power behind it, and the forecast calls for *expect good surf conditions*. This is the pick of the forecast. Not too big for an intermediate, but with that clean surface, it’ll be fun. Crowds are listed as *sometimes*, so don’t expect to have it to yourself, but with conditions like that on a Tuesday morning, it could be worth the paddle out. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
The rest of the week after that? Wednesday the 29th has a size jump to 6 ft with a long 11-second period, but that cross-shore wind keeps it tricky for a rivermouth. Thursday the 30th and into early August, the swell steadily drops off and the wind stays cross-on or onshore, so it goes back to ordinary.
So, in short: forget the next week. The real call is Tuesday morning the 28th of July—clean, glassy, and punchy. That’s the one.
