The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got a look at what's coming up for San Vicente Rivermouth. Let's get into it, because the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag.
Right off the bat, we've got a real flat spell on the horizon. For the first few days, you're looking at tiny, weak waves. The swell barely gets going, and the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, so it's not doing us any favours. The water temp is sitting at about 73°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that's a bonus if you're hanging out in the water anyway.
Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st see a little bump in size, around 4ft to 5ft from the NW, but the wind is messy and the conditions are just poor. The combined wave energy is moderate (341 on Thursday morning, 450 on Friday), but it's not clean enough to get excited about. You'll be battling chop and onshore breezes.
We hit a real quiet patch from the 22nd through the 26th. Swell drops right back, mostly under 4ft, and the energy is weak (182, 89, 55, those numbers are all in the low hundreds). The wind is all over the shop, and there's even some heavy rain and thunderstorms in there. Honestly, it's a good time to sort out your gear or find something else to do. The morning of Tuesday the 25th is glassy, but with only 3ft of weak swell, it's barely a ripple.
Now, the first real standout pops up on Thursday morning, the 27th of August. That's the one to circle. We've got a solid 8ft NW groundswell with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is glassy from the WSW. The combined energy is strong, hitting 1098. That's going to be proper, clean, and powerful. The Rivermouth will be working, but with that size, it's getting into the intermediate-plus zone. The morning glass-off is a major positive, so get on it early. The afternoon turns lumpy with a cross-on breeze, so the window is tight.
Friday the 28th drops back to 5ft, but the wind is better from the east, so it's a marginal clean-up option. After that, the swell dips again through the weekend, and the wind gets fresh and lumpy, especially on the 29th and 30th, with gusts up to 19 mph. That's more kite-surfing territory with those cross-on winds.
Looking into the second week, Monday the 31st of August sees a big increase. We're talking 8ft to 12ft of NW swell with a very long period of 12 to 13 seconds. The energy is massive (2108, 3633). This is not for the faint-hearted. It's a big, powerful groundswell. The wind is cross to cross-on, making it a choppy mess, but that size and period will be a sight to see. Tuesday the 1st of September still has a big 10ft swell with 12-second period, but the wind is onshore from the north. The afternoon of the 1st sees a drop to 8ft with a glassy north wind, which is a much better proposition for experienced surfers, but still a beast.
The tail end of the forecast, Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September, cleans up nicely. We get a glassy morning on the 2nd with a 5ft NW swell and a period of 10 seconds. The energy is moderate (424), and the conditions look good. The 3rd is similarly glassy but smaller, at 4ft. Those are nice, clean, smaller days to finish the run.
So, the standout is clear: Thursday morning, the 27th of August. Get out there for the glass-off on that 8ft NW swell. The second best bet is the glassy morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September, with a clean 5ft. Everything else is a fight for scraps, or just massive and messy.
Rusty.
