The Lowdown
G’day, this is Rusty. Let’s break down the surf for Seignosse - Le Penon over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water’s sitting at 76°F, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year – a solid 5°F above average. That’s a real treat if you’re getting in.
The next few days are pretty slim pickings, I won’t lie. There’s a bit of a dry spell before things get interesting.
We kick off with a small window on Saturday morning, the 22nd. Le Penon will see clean surf with an easterly offshore breeze at 9 mph and a 4ft NW swell pushing in at 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 211, so it’s got a bit of push, but nothing crazy. This is a good one for the beginners or anyone wanting a cruisy session with clean lines. Keep in mind, this spot can be inconsistent, so catch it while it’s there. Crowds are a possibility here.
After that, we hit a long quiet stretch. From Saturday afternoon right through to Tuesday morning, the 25th, the surf drops right away. We’re talking tiny, weak waves with poor conditions and onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a few days there where it’s just not worth paddling out.
Wednesday the 26th morning shows a little flare of life with a 3ft WNW swell and a light east-southeast cross-offshore breeze, but at only 6 seconds and 73 combined energy, it’s very ordinary.
Now, hold onto your board. Thursday the 27th sees a jump in size, but the wind turns ugly. Strong onshore WNW winds at 19 mph blow out a 6ft swell, and that energy jumps to 432. It’s messy and choppy. Friday the 28th is more of the same – onshore winds and building swell up to 8ft by the afternoon, with energy hitting a massive 1511. That kind of power is for experts only, but the wind ruins it. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddler’s dream.
Saturday the 29th is a bit of a tease. We get an 8ft WNW swell with 10-second period and only a light south wind in the morning, but it’s a cross-shore, not clean. The combined energy is strong at 1220, and the report flags marginal tide conditions. The afternoon stays cross-shore with a NNW breeze. Hard to get excited.
Here’s the standout: Sunday morning, the 30th of August. This is the one to circle. Le Penon will see a clean, 5ft NW swell with a 9-second period and a light easterly offshore breeze. The combined energy is a solid 399. The conditions are genuinely clean, and that offshore wind will make for smooth faces. This is the best on offer in the whole outlook – a proper session with good shape and a bit of power. Crowds could be there, but it’ll be worth sharing the lineup.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September drop back to small, weak surf with poor wind or onshore conditions.
The second week gets lumpy. From Wednesday the 2nd of September onwards, we see a run of bigger swells, but it’s all onshore or cross-onshore. The 3rd of September has a 7ft WNW groundswell at 12 seconds, but a light onshore wind keeps it messy. Energy is very strong at 1503, but without clean wind, it’s a battle. The 4th of September is similar. By the 5th and 6th of September, you’ve got stormy conditions with risk of thunderstorms and onshore winds making it a no-go for paddling. Those bigger swells are just blown out.
So, bottom line: if you want a wave, make the most of Saturday morning the 22nd or, the real winner, Sunday morning the 30th. The rest is either flat, weak, or trashed by the wind.
Rusty.
