The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into what’s on the menu for Seignosse - Le Penon over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a bit of a slow start, but we’ve got a few windows that could be worth a paddle. The first solid chance is a bit of a wait, but patience could pay off. The water is running much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 76°F – that’s a real treat for the skin.
The first few days, from the 19th to the 21st, are pretty much a write-off. The swell is either tiny, messy, or the wind is just junk. You’ll be staring at a flat lake or a choppy washing machine. Don’t bother.
Saturday morning, the 22nd of August, is where things finally get interesting. We’ll see a clean 4ft NW swell rolling in, with a period of 9 seconds and a light offshore wind from the east. The energy is moderate (235), and the setup should be clean. This is a solid pick for a beginner or a longboarder looking for some fun, easy waves. Expect a few others out there, but it won’t be a zoo.
Saturday afternoon the wind swings onshore, so make the most of the morning session.
The next real standout is a week away, but it’s a cracker. Friday morning, the 28th of August, the stars align. We’ve got a solid 6ft NW groundswell (10 second period) with a light offshore breeze from the ESE. The wave energy is significant (706), and the forecast calls for *very good surf conditions*. This is the one to circle on the calendar. The wind will keep it clean, and the size is punchy enough for a proper session. It’s a bit much for green beginners, but anyone with a bit of experience will be grinning.
Sunday morning, the 29th of August, offers a smaller, glassy 3ft NW swell, but it’s very ordinary. Not a disaster, but not a highlight.
Hold up, there’s a big red flag for Monday morning, the 31st of August. The models are calling for a massive 12ft WNW swell, and the note says it’s predicted to be *too big for this break*. The energy is extreme (2260). This is expert-only territory, and honestly, even then, it’s going to be a beast. The wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be a pretty picture.
Finally, Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September, brings another good window. A 7ft NW swell (9 seconds) with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE. The energy is strong (695), and the conditions are forecast to be *very good*. This is another solid, powerful option for intermediate to advanced surfers.
So, to wrap it up: The two true standouts are Friday morning, the 28th of August, and Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September. Get your board ready for those mornings. The rest of the period is a mix of small, windy, or just too damn big. Stay sharp.
Rusty.
