The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s coming up. This is Rusty, and I’m talking about Bicas.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for any decent surf. The water temp here is sitting around 67°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. But the swell? It’s just not happening.
We’ve got a long stretch of nothing from Tuesday the 14th all the way through to the end of Wednesday the 22nd. That’s over a week of flat to tiny, weak waves. The swell heights are bouncing between 1.0 ft and 4 ft, but the periods are short and the winds are mostly onshore or cross-on, with just a light breeze to a fresh breeze. The combined energy is weak, mostly under 100 (89, 70, 42, 76, etc.), and the wave comment is “poor surf conditions” every single time. Honestly, I wouldn’t bother paddling out – it’s a waste of energy.
Things start to look a little more interesting on Thursday the 23rd, but still not good. The swell picks up a bit – 3 ft to 4 ft from the WNW – and the energy gets into the moderate range (150 and 148), but the winds are onshore and fresh, so it’s messy. Still poor.
There’s a small window of hope early on Saturday the 25th. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the NW with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy hits 1372 – that’s strong. But the wind is cross-on from the NNW at 12 mph, making it choppy. The comment says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” It’s not great, but it’s the best we’ve seen. Bicas is a rarely breaking reef, and it wants an optimum swell from the west. This is NW, so it’s not ideal. A 6 ft swell on a reef that’s inconsistent is really only for the advanced crew. The onshore chop isn’t helping.
After that, the rest of the run into the end of the month is a mix of moderate to strong energy (273, 396, 1002) but poor surf conditions, strong onshore winds, and generally messy. The swell on Monday the 27th afternoon hits 7 ft from the NW with a period of 9 seconds, and energy of 1002, but it’s blowing WNW at 19 mph onshore. That’s a bit of a mess, maybe more interesting for kiteboarding than paddle surfing.
So, the standout? If I had to pick one, it’s the morning of Saturday the 25th. Swell is 6 ft from the NW, 12-second period, strong energy, and it’s the only time the comment doesn’t say “poor.” But it’s not clean, and it’s not the right direction. It’s a long shot for the experts. For a better bet, you’d have to wait and see if the forecasts change, because this area is in a pretty blank run right now.
Rusty.
